A possible game engine upgrade?

Featured Replies

Well, by the looks of things, summoning is going to be huge. Not in the sense that it will be popular but in the sense that it would take up a lot of code to create. I'm thinking that to make such a huge update into the game Jagex would have to make an upgrade to their game engine to support.

Considering the vast amount of familiars being summoned by players, along with new animations and code I believe Jagex are going to upgrade their game engine. If they did then they could perhaps make a slight improvement to the graphics. I've seen many pictures in the k base where the graphics look cleaner and smoother and I'm also wondering if they did have an engine upgrade they could update humans and the overall look of the game.

I could be wrong though, we'll just have to wait and see :-w

I hope so, those pics in the KB and on Jagex.com look a lot better than right now.

From what I can gather, most of the game engine updates have been gradually implemented over the past 12months, such as diagonal movment for npc's, inter-npc combat, etc. So with that in mind I don't think there will be to much to upgrade. But it can't be completly ruled out.

Java has its limits, rs as java program will get better but not much on the side of graphics

Well, the lag in the game has become greatly noticed. Before all these heavy updates, mainly the GE, the menu items (skills, magic book, invent, prayer..etc) would load before you look at them. Now they load as you look at them, then they load finely. Another lag or bug would be how the character has a 1 sometimes 2 second delay when doing actions like emotes, or agility obstacles(even ones outside of agility arenas). It's also being shown in the number of the 5 to 10 second lags, or when the game entirely freezes then unfreezes and catches up with the server. This to me, used to happen only once every week. It happens 6 or 8 times to me, on different worlds. Which is beginning to get annoying. As well, randoms are lagging, as well as NPC's.

They need to spread out the work either on more worlds, or take out little things, or fix up little things so they don't cause as much lag, or upgrade the engine so it can handle 1800 users doing whatever activity.

I believe they ALREADY did a game engine update? a few months back jagex did a game engine update and then people were speculating that a skill would come soon since last time jagex made a game engine update construction came out,

In the end it didn't come soon though

Java isn't limiting the graphical capability! JAGeX's decision to use their own software renderer is. If they added more lighting and effects RuneScape would run at an unplayable rate.

I agree with caldius. The client updates required for summoning have probably been released steadily over time so that when the skill is released there is less lag when downloading the client.

lol

The game engine has ZERO relation to the graphics.

Also they upgrade the game engine before they start work on something, so any engine changes to handle summoning would of been the ones last summer.

As for KB pictures looking much cleaner theres 3 reasons:

1) image leaks of future changes to graphics

2) smaller images = less detail = look more smooth

3) image compression = soften edges = looks more smooth

Operation Gold Sparkles :: Chompy Kills ::  Full Profound :: Champions :: Barbarian Notes :: Champions Tackle Box :: MA Rewards

Dragonkin Journals :: Ports Stories :: Elder Chronicles :: Boss Slayer :: Penance King :: Kal'gerion Titles :: Gold Statue

This was used as the arguement that summoning wasnt going to happen and the fact that it is makes me think their wont be, im no expret though so we just have to wait and see i guess.

I think more detail is put into the models in RS than you actually get to see.

From what I gather they actually "tone down" the models in the game so the game'll run better on slower machines, which is why sometimes when you see an image on the website it looks a lot better as they have no need to tone it down.

To hell with humanity;

The more I see, the less I believe.

Wtih so many extra active sprites following players around in the form of summoned monsters, I think they'll have no choice but to update the game engine.

I just hope they solve the problem I find with cats... where I'm constantly accidentally clicking on other people's animals. I really hope that's not an issue with so many other beasties running around soon.

Pets aren't sprites, they're 3D models. Sprites are just images.

No. Java can do way better than what RS has right now. The thing that's limiting it is the fact that it's browser-based.

Yes. Yes, it does.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:
