1. How-To

1.1 Intro

Hello, many of you may know me from Lightning's chat. But those who do not, I am Fireblade987. One of my favorite skills to do is farming. Why? Because farming requires almost no work to level AND you can make a profit from it. I used to hate farming until I found out the profit I can make from it. Now I am level 73 farming all from just doing this method which I am about to share with you (though many of you knew this already). Enjoy.

1.2 "The Way"

Herb farming. Simple as that. THAT is how you make money farming. I can make almost 500k a day just by checking my herbs every hour or so! The most profitable herbs you should concentrate on are:

Ranarrs!

Kwuarms!

Snapdragons!

Now let's learn more about farming these shall we?

_______

2. Getting Started

2.1 Items Needed

To do this you will need:

Magic Secateurs

Supercompost (1:1 with how many herb seeds you have)

Herb seeds (preferably ranarr, kwuarm, or snapdragon)

Lots of teleport runes

Ectophial

Spade

Seed Dibber

Rake

Energy potions (optional, but helpful)

Marigold seeds (extra moolah)

Watering can (for marigold seeds)

Regular Compost (for marigolds, I don't bother with them)

2.2 Requirements

32+ Farming

61+ Magic (for Trollheim)

51+ Magic (If not using Trollheim)

Garden of Tranquility Quest (I know, you don't HAVE to do it. But your yields will suck if you don't, so I'm calling it a req)

All quests up to Ghosts Ahoy (Same as above, but it'll take a long time getting to the patch if you haven't done Ghosts Ahoy)

2.3 Recommendation

All quests up to My Arm's Adventure (I HIGHLY recommend this quest for the awesome herb patch)

Temple of Ikov Quest (Boots of lightness)

40+ Summoning (Terrorbirds are awesome for farming, but if you can use bull ants, they work fine too)

47+ Agility (to climb down rocks on Trollheim)

66+ Hunter (Spottier capes help alot, not really necessary though if you have a bull ant/terrorbird)

A house with a glory (not really needed if you're willing to recharge your glories)

_______

3. Gearing Up

inventequipoh0.png

You can replace the mud staff with 2 water runes + 1 earth rune.

If you can not summon bull ants, then bring a super energy pot.

Can replace 1 earth, 1 law, 1 air with a glory amulet

If you can't use My Arm's patch, don't bring 2 fire runes, and deposit 2 of the laws.

BRING MARIGOLD SEEDS ONLY IF YOU WANT TO MAKE EXTRA MOOLAH :)

At a Tool Leprechaun, you should pick up the following:

farmitemsbp4.png

_______

4. Patches

4.1 Ardougne

ardougneya9.png

Ardougne is usually my first stop, you don't have to go there first, but I do. Anyways, tele there (I use the ardougne teleport, which is probably the slowest way to get to the patch, but it works). Other methods of getting there are listed on the map. Talk to the leprechaun to grab your items, and begin farming. After you get your yield, put whatever herbs you get in your Beast of Burden, if you have one. If not, just move on to the next patch.

4.2 Canifis

canifiszn9.png

My next stop is canifis. The best way to get there is using the ectophial. If you do not have an ectophial... well you can always ancient tele to Canifis pub, but for this guide, I'm going to just use the ectophial way. Run the short path from the altar to the patches. Pick your herbs and flowers (if you're growing marigolds for added cash). Throw all herbs into your BoB. Now if you don't have a BoB, or you had one hell of a payload, then do this:

Count how many spaces you have left. If you have at least 10, then move on to Trollheim. If less than 10, don't risk having to do 2 trips to Trollheim and teleport to Camelot/Draynor.

Note: If you're growing marigolds, then run to the waterpump and refill your watering can here, it is a little to the west of the whole allotment.

4.3 Trollheim

trollheimlu8.png

If you had enough free space, then you should teleport to Trollheim. Follow the long path to the herb patch. If you want, protect from melee against the attacking trolls. Once inside troll stronghold, run south until you hit a door that is to the west. Open it and run through, then go north until you see a ladder. Climb that ladder and you should be on the roof. Run north and there's the herb patch! This is the best patch in the game, in my opinion. If I can't rely on my other herb patches, I can always at least rely on this one. Well pick your herbs and let's move on!

4.4 Falador/Draynor

draynorbd0.png

This is one of 2 "pit stop" patches. The other being the catherby patch. If you do not have a home teleport that can be ready soon, then use Draynor as your FIRST pit stop. If you have a home teleport ready, then feel free to use catherby. To start off, glory teleport to Draynor (or like me, POH teleport and use your glory there to save charges). Make a stop at the bank and dump all your herbs + marigolds in there. If you've already been to canifis, drop off your ectophial too. Also, if you're using a mud staff, and have already been to ardougne, drop that off here too. Don't forget to empty your BoB items! Now run north towards the patch, jump the stile, run north some more and you'll be at the patch. Do your farm work and then continue on to the next patch!

4.5 Catherby

catherbymo3.png

This is the other of 2 "pit stop" patches. In my opinion, this one is the best patch (2nd to trollheim) because it has a close teleport location and a bank right under it. If you have a home teleport ready, then use Catherby as your first bank stop because you can bank what herbs you had, go farm the patch, then bank what herbs you just got! Teleport to Camelot then farm your patches. Bank when needed. Teleport to the next farm patch (if Catherby wasn't your last).

_______

5. The After-math

successcw9.png

If you've met all the requirements, then your MINIMUM yield per patch would be 5 herbs. However, you would usually get more. I average around 7 herbs per patch. If you're growing marigolds, you'll notice that many of them die, however enough of them will live that you'll still profit from growing them! Herbs grow in 75 minutes (longer if they become diseased). Try to check on them as much as possible so you can make a lot of profit per day!

Graphs of profit coming soon!

_______

6. Tips and Tricks

Use Amulet of nature so you can find out when your herbs are done!

Grow flowers as well (Marigolds) to maximize your profit.

This method works awesome for herblore exp too. You will still make profit from making potions with the herbs and selling them!

Beasts of Burden are your best friends, especially terrorbirds as their special gives you energy to run.

More to come!..

Perhaps you could not have everything in green? The green blends well with the background and is extremely hard to read. Other than that, it looks like yet another herb/allotment farming guide, everybody has their own method I guess. It's a good guide, but there are so many other good guides about the same thing out there.... Still, none of those good guides are up at the top of the forums ATM.

Ouch, my eyes.

It seems like a really extensive guide, but I can't go two or three words without having to rub my eyes.

The colour blends in too well with the background.

I'm going to try reading it again.

EDIT:

I truly am an idiot. -_-

All I had to do was highlight the text.

Really great guide. Farming is now my second least favourite skill in the game. :D

Lovely guide, but I got a question for your FAQ:

What is the average profit per run?

~Boo

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.

  • 3 weeks later...

At the moment, my average profit is about 123k profit per run with only the seeds and herb prices factored in. With compost and teleports... probably 120k about. And with about 5 runs a day you can make 600k a day just by farming =]

Guide is really nice and organized. If I wanted to make money other than combat I would definatly do this

Can you change the font to the default color or something? It kinda makes the guide look bad, and it's against the rules to have it all in one color :P

Seems like a good guide, almost the exact same method of travelling I use.

But, you should change the text color to default. This color is annoying.

And, your profits are way off. I planted snaps a lot, and I averaged 95-105k profit per run, including dead herbs. I preferred to plant kwuarms in the normal patches and a snap in My Arm's patch though, kwuarms are way cheaper if they die.

Supercompost is very easy to make yourself, just buy some watermelons from the g/e at 75 each.

And you don't 'come back in an hour or so', they take 75 minutes to grow. Due to the farming cycle they're sometimes not grown yet after 75 minutes, so it's best to do a herb run every 90-120 minutes.

And gremmy, grimy snaps are currently 150gp cheaper than clean ones.

Other than that, it's a good guide to help starting herb farmers out. Farming is ftw .

If you average 7 herbs per patch, that's 15k profit per patch, so 75k for the whole run. It's only good if you're under 56 farming.

like only 400k people are ranked in farming anyway (well it probably isnt 400k but nearly every rs'er dislikes farming so its probably gonna be low

good job ...its saifzman from lightning chat.

You might want to add planting a cactus tree and willow trees. I pick willow branches and cactus spines. Willow branches are about 1k ea and 2.5k ea for cactus spines. I make going to cactuses and willow trees a part of my regular farming routine.

8.978/10 i liek ur spotty cape \'

here's a pic of 3 days of farming..with cactus spines and willow branches. add about another 500k attained from selling ranarrs.

15dxa1h.jpg

as you can see i made 150k from cactus spines and willow branches.

You might also want to add to always clean your herbs for max profit. For some strange reason clean herbs are worth more than grimy. Also add credits to saifzman \' cause i own...too much

I'd also reccommend spirit weed seeds. You can buy them pretty quickly at max (143 gp), you get 4-5 herbs per seed, and the herbs sell for about 1.9k each. Don't clean the herbs, though, because they're worth more grimy. Odd, really.

EDIT: Just with some quick calculations, even if you buy the seeds at max, get 4 herbs from each and sell them at minimum, you'll get approximately 51.7 times as much money back as you paid for the seeds. I'd say that's a fairly good profit.

I myself farm herbs, and what I've found extremely useful is this:

For the allotment patch - Grow Watermelons

For the flower patch - Grow Nasturniums (AND DO NOT PICK!!!!)

That yields a lot of watermelons per patch (around 20, I believe). Now stuff those watermelons into that compost bin. Here's the math behind this:

1 Watermelon seed = ~3k, so 3 should be ~9k

1 Supercompost = ~600 gp, so around 18 (to be safe) = 10.8k

There! The supercompost paid for the watermelons! And you've made profit and farming xp. But stuffing them in the bank will waste time. Instead, every farming run, grab an empty bucket and take some of the compost. This would mean you get "free" compost for your herbs, and extra farming xp.

Of course, banking the compost accomplishes the same thing.

That's something I found really helpful. Great guide.

Question. Can I make more money farming Kwuarm than Ranaars? I also want herblore exp, I dont want to just sell the herbs. Also, thanks for the marigolds idea, that will make tons of money!

One small tip. Instead of teleing to Ardgourne and running to patch up north, I use the Combat Bracelet (4) and tele to ranging guild, and just run a little south to the path. When I need to recharge it, I just run east to legends guild and recharge.

Great Guide!
