is it worth looking "good"?

i've come to the realization that people like to "look good" in this game. when some one doesn't know that they've made a lot of money or killed a really hard to kill monster then it's not worth knowing that YOU have done it. so here is my discussion for this thread-

is it really necessary for some one too see you with the most expensive sword/armor/hat in the game?

now before i go off and say it's not worth it to look good let me just say this. i am against wearing name brand clothing. i think it's dumb and i don't want to look like my clothes just came out of a paper shreder when really i just spent 20 dollars on a shirt that looks like it came from the salvation army. ok. some more disclaimers- skill capes. i have one (had untill rocking out came out) and i'm quite proud of it. it took a lot of hard work and, yes i do feel bad when i'm not wearing it so people don't know the HARD WORK that went into getting it. for the record it's a quest cape.

the last part- i have been -at one point- "concious" of what people thought of me in this stupid game. yes i call it a stupid game because people DO take it too seriously which is stupid *frankly this is stupid too i'll admit*. i had the draglon platelegs at one time. i had the dragon medium helmet. i also had full dharoks which at the time was worth 3.6m and i could JUST afford it. i had about 5m at the time so it was kind of cutting deep into the purse. i sold that about 3 weeks after getting it though. my friend who introduced me to the game also was one of those people and right around when a full set of rune was 250k and we got the cash for it we were pretty giddy. showing off in our rune sets in f2p. we were "cool". untill it became boring.

i decided at one point i wanted to have guthans. a full set which is like omg for me because the thought of not needing food was like not needing oxygen to live. almost impossible. but i didn't want it so i could "show off". no i just wanted because of the effect. well i did show off a little bit once i got it because i was all sorts of happy (took 6 months of wishing and 2 weeks of acting).

anywho heres the question. why must you wear the tassets, the 3rd age armor, the trimmed armor, and *shiver* the dragon armor? if there isn't a story meaning or anything else behind it and your just doing it to look "good" in a computer game then why the hell are you doing it????? i'm so [bleep]ing confused! why why why why why why why!? i have 14m to my name and the best armor i have in my bank is ahrims and fighter torso. *i sold the guthans*. do you see me complaining how i look? i have more money than some of these people that are showing off! i'm just really confused why people do this. if there's no reason other to look good *i can excuse the- i have so much money i don't even care one because i've done that* then i really cannot stand that.

discuss. and now... to put on this suite......THERE. flame proof :D .

Looking good, in society and runescape is a way of getting attention, its society at its best and worst, you can see the beautiful people and you can see the conciet and lies buried beneath.

I myself always dress well, hell i have a 520$ pair of vestment jeans, but in the end i think i pick up just as easy at the clubs in my 90$ jay jays outfit.

In runescape, people want to look good to garner attention, and since jagex has removed 90% of player interaction, wearing good stuff is seen as an easier way to meet people, think about it, all my good friends were made trading or pking, nowadays at training spots most people just tell you to get lost rather then hold a conversation, wearing nice armour makes people notice you, maybe they will strike up a conversation.

Myself i just wear whatever is the best armour for my specific situation at the time.

I agree that people do it to get attention, but also because they are good, such as bandos. costs a lot but it is great armor. and third age, some of the best defense from a non repairable armor. dragon is also good defense for a level 60 defense person, though the cash spent for the full helm is a little over the top. people don't just do it for looks, though I'm sure that is one of the reasons people do it.

At the moment, i am wearing a dragonfire shield. best shield in game, and adds +7 to strength. i do this because it help slayer all around, even on dragons, and it is convenient. it is not because i want to show off, it is an albeit unneeded, yet still nice advantage instead of needing to change armor etc. after every task.

i must admit however that i do have some pride in being able to purchase it, but that was not the underlying reason. i ask only that you don't make the mistake of believing that people buy things specifically to show of. much of the time it is because it will help them do better in the game.

Would you play the game if there were no graphics, at all? Or say, something like stickfigures with cute little paper swords and such, but with all the content with have now, just really pathetic graphics. Graphics play an important part in the game, otherwise it just doesn't make any sense anymore. I'd guess people just get attracted to certain items, how it looks, and they buy it. I can't imagine people just buying something entirely for egocentrical reasons.

I played rogue and nethack, the zork games, and a tonne of other games that had no or very little graphics, and i still play some of them today.

Oh, and I bet you bought the super-rare and expensive armour to show off to everyone your pixel-figure greatness huh? Oh wait, you can't, you can't even see armors in nethack, oops? Let's just forget you're comparing apples and oranges, and pretend it makes sense.

I played tetris. But I don't recall ever feeling the need to dress my tetris into some nice fancy clothes that take 200 hours to get, partyhat anyone?

But of course, graphics are SO overrated, let's just talk Jagex out of making this graphic update next week, it's just so stupid, who cares about that stuff anyway? While we're at it, we should all cut our eyes out and be blind, who cares about vision?

i can't find a smiley that fits the mood. oh well

highland- what the hell? waaaaaaaaaht?? sounds to me your being a little in your face. in zelda the wind waker when you beat the game you get to play as link in his pajamas. there's no online play for that game and who's going to know if you successfully beat the game unless you tell them? it's like having a disc of returning. you can certainty make a better example other than your tetris one... that's all i'm saying. and be nice.

halt- you said what i expected some people to say. dragonfire sheild is probably the bestest things in the game right now that i can't afford lol.... i always find myself killing dragons and needing an extra boost and for me the money is worth it. but what strikes me is when i'm in flesh crawlers and the things are level 28 hit a max of maybe 10 once every 40 0's and this guy (level 90) is in full dharoks obviously just there to show off. these things have a health of 28 for Christs sake!

yourgone- well your clubbing and probably trying to pick some one up. lol, although *i admit* these stupid clothes people wear with the holes in the jeans and such society looks at that and thinks you've got money or your preppy. something like that. so it's going towards a use. some people might argue well that's why i always wear it, but i'd like to ask them- why is it that you complain you can't have that brand new hdtv when you have about 20 items of clothing "worth" about 300 dollars when really i can get better looking clothes without the tears and sewn on "abercrombie" for about a fraction of that price. probably amounting to about... i don't know 100 dollars? my shirts cost about 3 dollars. they have no flashy designs on them. my flashy designs usually contain a "new york yankees" logo but that's understandable. i like showing pride in my baseball team and i don't mind throwing a little more money out there to show support for a my team. *let the flaming begin*

yanksrule, I agree with you xD

I certainly see no point in flashy armors and swords and the like. I can't stand all the other F2Per's running around bragging about their gold trimmed rune armor. I personally think it's ugly!

But at the same time, I'm a hypocrite. I recently bought a Santa Hat on my other account, because I love how they look and people can see this expensive item and know that I must be rich or have high levels. But I think in the case of rares, there can always be an exception for those who want the item because they think it shows off hard work, dedication and all the effort they put into obtaining that through skilling.

I accept some items for showing off, and some items are to show hard work.

Rares - santas and phats, Take long to get, show hard work.

Skillcapes - Hard work rewards you with an awesome cape, and cool emote.

Rune (g) (t) (zammy/sara/guthix) - unless you have an outfit of some sort (full guthix, defence ammy, addy gloves, all green. or trying to make it look awesome) they are just showing off, i always say to people who are wearing these "I hope you get the evil chicken while your toast is burning". Just get rune. . .

3rd age - come on, seriously? no reason why you would be wearing this. . . only way people buy it is through junk trades, meaning ussually only merchanters have these. if you got 99 rc and are showing off your new kite, ok, but really, most you wear the full set to kill ankous?

Barrows - depends, but if you are using it in a place where the monsters dont hit at all, really, we don't care that the repairs are chump change for you.

I don't really show off my combat outfits at all. torso+rune+netiznot helm etc.

I normally just wear nice non-combat outfits. That are cheep and easy to get if you know where to get them.

But when I see people whos training with armor I normally say "dosn't it get hot in that armor" or "That armor must stink by now with all the sweat, blood, ashes, and dragon snot" or something along that line.

I think Jagex encourages people to wear good looking stuff because they have created items like elegant costume, top hat, canes, flared trousers, and etc.

In my point I say armor ftl. -.-

in runescape, and in actual life, the way i see it is: if you have the money, show it off. simple, if you worked hard enough to earn the money why not spend it on things that you enjoy?

there is a game completely about showing off what you have: Hobbo Hotel.

-Hobbo hotel is a game where you create rooms and fill them with furniture while meet new people. very pointless game in my opinion yet many people love it.

there is nothing wrong with wearing a phat or driving a ferrari if you can afford it. just do it only if it makes you happy.

People like to look their best, whether it's in reality, or for their avatar in a game. As 123Yourgone said, it gets you noticed.

May just be natural to want get noticed. Look at some birds, for example, very brightly colored and decorated, and they are the ones that survive to reproduce.

Be mature about that last bit now...

My fashion sense in Runescape is linked to my real fashion sense. I like looking good in Runescape because otherwise I feel naked or scruffy. An undressed feeling. I think at the end of the day, it is all down to whether or not the person wants to look good. Sometimes people do look good just to get attention, but some people like myself do it because of personal preferences. I think there is nothing wrong with other people looking good or bad, but when it comes to my own pixel, I want her to look great.

you guys are taking this the wrong way! i myself find some way to dress my character up to show off my quest cape. i wear desert robes, sara prayer book, glory amy, crystal sheild, white flowers, quest cape and hood. i used to have my lazy cat out when they were WHITE but since they're GREY now it kind of ruins it.

i'm just saying that when you shovel out loads of money just to show you "have" loads of money.... well then that's stupid. i mean i did about 2-3 months ago have a green h'ween mask and that lasted i think a week. i made 500k in the deal though ^^. rares i can make an exception with because those are a remberance of the pastime of rs, look kinda silly, and usually these things are all sorts of expensive and give no def/atk/special purpose. so yes i can forgive people when they say but wait i have a rare.

it's when people buy dragon legs instead of rune legs because it makes me look "less poor". IT'S 800K FFS! NOT THAT MUCH MONEY.

that's all

Its a human instinct that's built into our subconscious to try to look your best, anywhere. Why do you think skillcapes are so popular?

As for other games, its the same with COD4 as well. Plenty of people wouldn't mind starting from level 1 with no perks or new weapons again once they hit 55 just for the prestige symbols.

i spy with my little eye something..... stupid.

i see two people who didn't read the post. can you guys see em? i sure can because skill capes is a representation of hard work. and that whole subconcious thing? yeah bs. don't buy it for a second.

-a sidenote about "cod4"-

i have call of duty and that probably is one of the dumbest games i've ever played. it's right up there with that E.T. game that was on the orginal nintendo. yep i'm going there. call of duty has no right to call themself a major game publishing company. they try to be like bungie or ubisoft when really their a crappy copy and paste version. i hate them. anywho.

read. if your going to say your oppinion something that people are going to hear/read then at least when you respond, read the whole debate before posting. thaaat'd be great.

for me, looking good is the ONLY compensate to looking like im from RSC. without a party hat i have no proof and with no 99's after 7 years theres no proof either. most peeps were godswords and bando for its high power/defence. true there are some who mearly do it to make themselfs look flashy but not always. as for me, obtaining full dragon armor was something i wanted to get since 2004, for me its a goal as back then it was the best armor and to me it still is. but for now im using runite as i cant afford better and slowly making some for my dream to be realised.

though for me looking good its just the defualt flared pants, plain button short, saradomin stole, dragon boots and cooking gloves. simple.

yeah you can usually find me in spottier cape, boots of lightness, and penace gloves. i might be wearing my quest cape hood. 90% of the time i'm wearing that so i don't have to worry about run energy because i'm ridiculously impatient in this game.

but if i jumped into the unlimited run spring then i'm probably wearing my quest cpe and the heaviest thing that offers the best protection because i'm probably doing a quest, clue or some high level monster killing.

so i wouldn't get annoyed with seeing myself look stupid over and over again i have a white and black theme going on with my character when i'm not wearing anything (naked? :-k ). i'd give you a pic but that's not the point. it cost me about eh.... 3k? 5k maybe? point is, that it took me 5k to make my character look good. one look at my bank and i know i'm pretty well off in rs.

Well... I have bandos plate and although I didn't actually get it as a drop lol only 89 cb, its still has a story behind it. The story is miy hours of hard work in f2p smithing steel, cutting yews, and hunting in p2p. So although I can't tell people who ask me about my armor of heroic tales of me killing lvl 600 bosses, I can tell them of the hard work I put in to earn my armor.
