What is the best console or platform?

I do not just mean for games, but overall, the best console or platform. Is it a computer? The Xbox 360? How about going a bit retro with the Dreamcast? We will see what TIF Video Games & Consoles will say. Here is a basic list to give you a memory jolt.

Console (Total 11/13 votes):

  •
    [*:1pcttt6i]
Atari 2600 - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Sega Genesis/Mega Drive - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Sega Dreamcast - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) - 1

[*:1pcttt6i]Nintendo 64 (N64) - 1

[*:1pcttt6i]Nintendo Game Cube - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Nintendo Wii - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Sony Playstation - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Sony Playstation 2 (PS2) - 2

[*:1pcttt6i]Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Microsoft Xbox - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Microsoft Xbox 360 - 1

[*:1pcttt6i]And of course, the mighty computer (Not really a console, but close enough) - 6

Handheld/Portable (Total 2/13 votes):

  •
    [*:1pcttt6i]
Nintendo Gameboy/Gameboy colour - 1

[*:1pcttt6i]Nintendo Gameboy Advanced - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Nintendo DS - 0

[*:1pcttt6i]Playstation Portable (PSP) - 1

TWO DIFFERENT CATEGORIES DOES NOT MEAN TWO DIFFERENT VOTES.

I Personally am going to have to go with the Nintendo 64. There are just so many games from there that I love (The Legend of Zelda series, Banjo-Kazooie, Mario series, Golden Eye, to name a few), not to mention the nostalgia I get when playing it. Great childhood memories+great games = favourite console.

The computer comes in at second for me, only because I see it as more of a tool for communication rather than gaming.

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.

PC, absolutely no contest. No other console or platform in the world has 25+ or so years worth of material for it, and no other console in the world is more advanced.

I'm gonna agree with him on this one, my comp plays games much more efficiently than any of the three systems out there atm. All the other systems are basically a computer copycat, except the Wii I think.

For portable consoles, PSP beats anything. The library of games may lack but it's a lot of fun customizing it and not to talk about the awesome features.

If it's "hacked" you can emulate legal games from (As long you have a legal copy):

- PS1/PSX

- Atari 2600

- Sega Genesis/Mega Drive

- Nintendo Entertainment System

- Super Nintendo Entertainment System

- Nintendo 64

- Gameboy/Gameboy colour

- Gameboy advance

and many more. You can also play "Homebrew" (User made games).

Listen to music, watch videos, browse the internet, customize your own themes etc.

I enjoy the NDS homebrew scene more. While the PSP does have better software the NDS's touch screen lends its self very well to homebrew games.

How well do the PS1 / N64 emulators work though? I was under the impression that they were pretty slow.

So many amazing games, such advanced graphical technology. So many years of games. Gotta love it the best.

Hoping to get a new Signature (with matching avatar) soon. :D

In the meantime...Steam username: )I'll rewrite it later (add me if you want)

It pretty much struggles to play them all.

Votes so far have been counted.

Note that it makes it a lot easier on me if you just state outright what you're voting for, Not just quote someone

Also, I was hesitant about putting PC up there, simply because I knew it would blow everything else out of the water. Of course though, I had to recognize its great contribution to gaming, and know it would be voted for anyways.

Thank you to all those that hae voted so far, and anyone else who will ::'

Well, it's really only fair. It is, after all, a gaming platform.

And anyways all consoles soon will simply become simplified PC's, hell, they already are. I mean, you can browse the web / download stuff to your hard drive, even the PS3 needs you to install games.

Agreed, and now I feel that the only thing seperating consoles and the PC is just the fact that there are different GUI's, different OS's, and consoles are on a TV, where you play on a couch. What I would like to see for a computer is a download (I am doubting companies will provide for free) from the console companies that allow you to have the interface of the console, the ability for the controllers to function with a PC, and licensing for the computer to play the games.

The Xbox 360 to me will be the first to do this, mainly because of MS, and also all that needs to be done is the GUI release. Of course, this won't happen because of money, and I for one do not want to be paying $200-$300 just for a program that allows me to play games on a platform I (Well, my dad really) payed upwards of $600 for, and then $60-$80 for each game.

Basically, I really think that integrating the feel of a console with the ever-increasing power of a computer, along with the option to easily upgrade the console. The biggest roadblock to this, like I mentioned before, is the fact that consoles bring in billions of dollars of revenue for gaming companies, along with providing a greater audience for game publishers.

The only reason consoles stay and the reason why your "OS idea" wouldn't work is that it is so much easier to program for one, pre-defined set of hardware instead of having to worry about all the different combination.

The setback of PC gaming is that for large, graphically intense projects it is difficult to really know how a certain system can handle a game. Where as the 360 only has 1 setup the PC can have thousands and thousands of different setups. Perhaps motherboard X and video card Y don't work together well for game Z, and developers need to take all of those into consideration.

One of the PC's biggest strengths, being it's customization, is also it's largest weakness -- and just something developers have to deal with.

Makes a lot of sense - the less parts there are, the less problems you will have - but it would still be nice to hae the processing power of a computer in my Xbox 360. Or ateast, Microsoft could release a sevice that upgrades your Xbox, and game companies simply include expansions in terms of performance of graphics that are only activated if you have said upgrades installed. I just don't like the idea that companies can easily make games whose hardware requirements far surpass those of my console, and that there is no way to catch up save for buying a newer console.

I'll have to say 360, but only since my current PC is super slow with games and I can't play many. We're about to get some more RAM for it, though, so hopefully it will speed up.

Still, I'm not sure how long Console Gaming is going to last anymore. Microsoft and Sony keep losing money on their systems and are using online service to help recover from the cost. Then you have Nintendo, which is happily earning money off the Wii. This could possibly be the last gen of consoles.

Just a theory.
