I guess these two questions could only be answered by people that have admin access to their clan's website. Hopefully, there are some of those here.

1. How do you deal with random people registering in your clan site for the sole purpose of posting porn/hack sites/virus links/etc. I get about 10 people a day who try to do this and it's a little time consuming to have choose which members to validate and which not to.

2. Is it possible to change the type of ads that Google shows on your clan site? We mostly get those autoing, gold farming, buy gold adverts. I was hopping to find a way around it without having to take out Google Ads box because that would have a monthly price.

We've never had any long-term offenders. All I can think of is to report the person to the host of your forums, whether it be InvisionFree, IPB, etc. They have full control & can restrict more than you can.

Changing ads without the host's permission usually violates their Terms of Service & can get your forum deleted immediately without warning.

I'll come to your IRC tomorrow and help you set up the following solutions...

But here's how I've solved both problems:

1. Make the register form have a question that requires human thought... In my case; How many days are in a leapyear? If they enter the correct number, their registration gets through, if not, then either this person was a bit slow, or it was a bot...

2. Google ads are based on the searchterms you have on your site. I pay for my website and domain name, and have a whole bunch of sweet features at my disposal (webbased nonjava IRC) due to the stuff you get when you buy webhosting :)

1. I remember when I first joined we had a ton of those. We just stuck it out, mods closed/moved topics, admins IP banned those guys, and eventually it just stopped. Haven't had a problem since 2007.

2. No idea lol, maybe ask invisionfree?

IP bans don't work on someone who's computer savvy. Anyone who knows what a proxy, or even has heard of the word "proxy", can bypass any IP ban thrown at him or her. It'd be better to contact your forum host who knows how to deal with these types of situations.

If the problem keeps persisting, I would force users to either activate themselves or have administrator activation. Just temporarily of course until the problem gets fixed. However, if you're just a moderator with no real administrative powers, all you can do is just remove the posts and keep banning the accounts (will slow them down).

As for the ads, I do not think you can remove the ads without paying. For example: With Proboards you can pay to remove the ads. I believe the option is also open for invisionfree. As for using PHPBB, I know that there are a few free forum hosting sites that do not have any advertisements at all.

1) Solution: Disable posting rights until an admin has validated you

2) Solution: Ad removal. Can't change them, though.

1. If you're using IF and you're still getting the porn spam, SWITCH TO ZETABOARDS! I know it sounds crazy, but we've been having the same problem for about 4 or 5 months now. It eventually got so bad (about 20 new porn topics a day and another 20 or so fake forum registrations) that we made all of the Guest forums require admin approval for all new posts and topics. When we switched to Zetaboards (about three weeks ago now), they all just... stopped! I know it sounds crazy and I don't know what security features are exactly responsible for it, but Zetaboards definitely deserve this smiley -> =D>

2. The only real way I know of (besides paying to completely remove the ads) is to click right on the "Ads by Google" and then you can send them feedback about whether the ads on the site you just visited were appropriate for that site. It may work, it may not, but that's the only way I can think of.

1. Ip ban them. If that doesn't work, Make a mass IP ban. If I remember correctly, MD had this certain guy that posted pornographic stuff on other forums, so we banned him (this was before I became admin btw), and then came more accounts like that one. What did they have in common? All of them started with the first few numbers being the same, making a wildcard almost completely stopping them

2.I'm fairly sure that if you use the words "gold", "Runescape", "selling" and other words that might appear a lot in gold sites, then those ads will appear. Solution: try to use those words less often.

Actually Mr. D we never had a single porn image put on our site thanks to my vigilant efforts. Every account that has been made since... well pretty much the beginning required admin validation. Before I just approve an account I try to check out the Email Address and User Name. If a search turns up a spammer, or some one who is a member of a bunch of porn sites, I ban him, and see how many times he keeps coming back. One way to tell if it's a spammer is if a search turns up multiple results on different forums of the same account having recently registered.

Just having to wait to be validated stops allot of these people dead in their tracks... some times I think they are bots.

I meant about the guy you were just talking about, I meant that he was allegedly doing that, not that he actually did it.

1.Just make people have to be validated before they have the ability or moderate that membergroups posts

2. I have adblock so idk about them.

1. of all the clans i've administratored its rarely happened, due to the fact that i restrict every IP (household) to only one account, unless notified about family registrations.

2. I no longer bother with freebie clans, if you cant afford good hosting/forums, then dont complain about the ads.

even though its illegal, you can put a neat little javascript code inside your board header that removes all ads, but its against your providers TOS, so it shouldn't be done.
