Along with the one story line, there are a multitude of books containing the same characters in the same universe. There is the Halo wars game. The FFVII series only captures one story. JRPGs are more linear, with most of the game being about the storyline and characters. Standard RPGs are more customizable, allow you to do "anything" you want, and are less linear. The storyline isn't as important as it is in JRPG's. You usually play as some person trying to figure out what to do next.

You do make a good point about Bioshock, actually not a whole lot of games are 360 exclusive, games like GOW and Mass effect are available on PC. Unless you compress it badly the quality lost is often times hardly noticeable. Look at the difference in quality from a Blue Ray movie and then a DVD. Chances are it will be hard to tell a major difference, certainly not one that would detract from the experience.
