A new era - Formula1 in the Dark.

Singapore are holding the first ever Formula1 race in the dark. A race has never been held in the dark before. The lights the Singaporians had to set up state-of-the-art lights that do not give the driver glare through their visor. This has personally stunned me, what are your opinions?

I really hope that race in the dark will be successful --> more of such races can be organised over the world, although it's probably much more difficult for a F1 racer to drive for 2 hours in complete dark.

<- This is what makes F1 fun :D

It needs some form of excitement. Usually, I watch the start, then I go away. Unless something major happens, the positions won't change after that.

exactly. i hate it. with all there stupid paddle shifts and billion dolor aerodynamics. its just not exciting, and isn't that meant to be the entire point?

The same thing has happened to V8 Supercars over here in Australia. its just to close. only fractions of a second between people. when the new VE commodore was released, they had to shorten the wheel base of it so it didn't have an advantage over the fords, nothing like the real car. they even went as far as introducing gearboxes like motorbikes where you push it one way to go up and another to go down.

my dad remembers back when there were minutes between 2 people, and people would stop and change clutches in the pits for half an hour, and still come a good position in the race.

its to close now, and no where near as fun or exciting.

Looking forward to this. We're a bit over achieving though, we're always trying to set "firsts in the world".

First Night Zoo...First Night Race...First pair of durian shaped art's house...Hell,first YOG host...still pretty stupid to me tbh.

BUT,it is quite an accomplishment...Though we're Singaporeans, not Singaporians...Or you could go French and call us Singapoureans, but do that at risk of getting beaten up.

Having said that,I can't wait to see this,my brother has tickets for the practice run,but I will be watching it for free at a coffee shop. Not Starbucks.Apparently there's something on the Flyer that informs you of what happens on the track.Yellow being...crash and the car's out to rescue, and red being the race is cancelled...I think...The Flyer is just epic, but blowing 100k+ to spin it the other way (Fengshui  ) was epic fail.

so i herd u liek devarts?

If you look at me and feel offended by my 666-ism,think.I could be just as offended by your "cross".

[hide=This's why I'm hot]

The Eleventh Commandment:Thou Shalst only say "Amen, brother".

Amen, brother

Amen, brudda (referring to the 10th commandment)

amen Bruder! (german ftw)

I'm invulnerable to everything, except Lenin and Dragoonson.

That's impossible.

I might be in Singapore when its on :o

Not that I could ever go to it :P

Tbh I don't think its even going to be amazing, the first few laps everyone will think 'Oh wow this is amazing" then 10 laps later the novelty will wear off.

Never watch Forumla 1 though, love V8 supercars Australia though- went to Bathurst in 2003, and almost went last year ::'

NASCAR and the NHRA have been doing this for years... nothing different at all except its on a road course.

Oh, yeah, I always forget just how powerful those NASCARs are compared to F1 cars. Because theyre also really likely to break at the slightest collision.

Except NASCAR go round in circles, only experience a mere 2G in cornering and max out at a pitiful 90mph whereas F1 perform a circuit [taking right turns, no less], get up to and above 5G with 200mph speeds all in nothing more than a carbon shell designed to break up in a crash.

Get your facts straight. NASCAR and F1 both run V8 engines, with about the same horsepower. Only difference is weight. NASCAR does race on road courses, even in the rain. (shock, I know.) And at the larger tracks, they do get up in the 190-200 mph range. Sure, F1 cars do this as well, but the don't do it 3 or 4 wide, 8 cars deep. That's where the danger is.

NASCAR is no where near as dangerous as F1.

Forgot to point out that the IRL has done this (night races) for a while too. An Indy car is just about the same as a F1 car.

Thought some might want to see this also:

I hope hamilton doesnt win, i hate that guy, hes so freaking smug and i dont even think hes the best driver on the field, last season he had probably the best allround car on the track (ferrari's having faster straight line speed) and for peopel to hail him as the greatest ever british driver is freaking absurd.

Ok im biased towards alonso but thats because he farted in the face of schumacher in the final corner of the japanese grand prix to seize the constructors title, he had flair on and off the track which is something hamilton will never have, he did teh rockstar thing of crashing a hired supercar...oh wait no he was with his dad and he crashed it...WTF???

Plus hamilton winning is just a way for ITV to extebd the 30 minute hamilton discussion of how "amazing he is" to an hour.

BAH!

Formula one is the most boring sport of all time.

It would only be interesting if instead of people, the cars were driven by monkeys. And before the race the monkeys were fed ALOT of beer.

Have to agree with you there... Left! Right! Left! Right! No passing! No passing!

The sport also seems to require all their drivers to have this perfect image, and that totally ruins the off, and sometimes on, track acts of the drivers.

Personally, I'd love to see F1 do a race on an oval. Though all the drivers would likely wreck because they can't pass another car for anything. Oh no, two wide into the corner! What do we do?!

F1 race in the dark...with lights.

How the [bleep] is this different with day only with a tad less light?

If you want a real race, do like Midnight Club or something. Without the innocent cityfolk of course. ::'

The artificial lighting can provide glare in strange places... as well as odd shadows. Having many light sources instead of one (sun) will often make a flickering on the track as you dive. Can be very distracting, apparently.

you got that right. i never thought i would say this, but this is less interesting then watching cricket on tv. you cant get much worse then cricket, its so repetitive and boring to watch, alright to play, but boring to watch. this sport somehow has managed to.

It just seems like a bad gimmick to me, I really don't see how this will make F1 more interesting or exciting.

Its not a gimmick, people see "Night Race" and immediately think its going to be F1 cars racing around in the pitch black. When infact the lights at the circuit will provide enough light to make the circuit lighter than it would be during the daytime. The only main reason there having the race at night is for the fans, so the people in the Western World (Europe mainly) where the majority of its fanbase is dont have to wake up in the middle of the night to watch the race.

I really think the German kid Bourdait or something will win this race. He is a great F1 driver, and he is in a Torro Rosso, which is one of the slowest cars on the track.

[cabbage] Hamilton. I really don't like him.

He's French, but at least there's someone else in the world who doesn't like Hamilton. ::'

Nope Sebastien Bourdais is French (Born in Le Mans), the other driver for the Toro Rosso team is Sebastian Vettel who is German.

Did I say it was in the pitch black? I just don't think it will add anything to the sport in terms of interest and excitement - that is why I consider it a gimmick that is only designed to get more viewers. The FIA should be looking at ways at making the actual business of racing more exciting by making overtaking more common and by giving the teams a more level playing field.
