99% of the people that hate farming are so ignorant that they believe you need to stand around watching the plant grow. The other 1% are too poor to get decent farm xp, or too lazy to go plant new trees 10 hrs later.

some are misleading, are all of them? no most are opinion based which isnt really misleading. The farming poll was Bias.

 

 

 

 

 

example, we had a poll asking the stats of our computers like 70% said they have over "3 gigs of memory" which RAM is the memory jagex spoke of.

 

 

 

 

 

most common computer uses translate memory as physical storage. they didnt understand it was RAM at least, that is what i believe because i am pretty sure that not ALL those people have 3 gigs of ram which isnt really "standard" just yet. its cheap and available but its not like every computer comes with it. I would say 1-2gigs is still the norm, and then you have to consider the players who actually havent updated their computers in ## of years. This poll is for example why i think we got such a RAM intensive graphic update. a 4-5 year old computer might not be able to handle HD.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

as for too poor to get farming levels and some other crap i read. That is dumb, I never planted trees for exp. I did plant all my spirit tree seeds i got from my kingdom because it seemed dumb not to.

Well I'm sure if other results were 'misleading' they would have hidden more polls since then.

In my opinion, most of the problem was caused by Jagex's failure to clearly explain the skill. The Knowledge Base articles said next to nothing about moving between patches while your crops are going. The only support going around was a couple of RSOF posts on the day of release.

 

 

 

Another part of the problem was Jagex releasing seeds a month before farming, everyone bought thousands of seeds and realized they'd only need a few dozen every week. I think people were expecting it to be more of a mass production agriculture skill, like planting in rows and harvesting fields, than one seed patch per farming location.

They always do that with polls that make them look bad, or compromise them in some sort of way.

 

 

 

Anyone remember that poll about age/gender? Showed most of Runescape was little kids, and that 90% of players were male. :lol: They hid it shortly afterwards.

Actually, I think you guys missed a major reason for the negative result.

 

 

 

If I say the word "summoning", you immediately think of cool power beasts of some sort, even before it was introduced to RS. It is something cool to most people, regardless of whether or not it could work in RS.

 

 

 

But if I say "farming", what do you think of. Days and days in vegetable fields (a plate of it is bad enough for some people), long hours in the cold far away from cities and into the country back. Maybe a lot of cows and dirt and hardwork. There is a very negative perception of the name, this attitude is taken into the game.

 

 

 

Of course it does not help by the fact that most of the early rewards is meaningless, unattractive and downright slow in Xp. A lot of people still dislike farming, because it is called farming.

 

 

 

There are many different reasons for the hate at the start

 

-Negative image of the word

 

-Lack of early rewards

 

-Misconception of the nature of the skill

True. But I'm not really all that fond of it simply because... well... it's not exciting. At all. Whoop de doo! My plant's full grown! Now I can harvest it!

It wasn't just because it was negative. The poll was released very soon after farming was released. Really it only reflected the initial reactions of the players. And of course, players at that time were more concerned with it's immediate benefits then long term. It sounded like a stupid boring skill: plant seeds, water em, then wait. Sounded like the stupidest skill on the planet. People failed to realize how useful or easy it was to train: plant seeds, have the farmer watch them, go play castle wars. Not to mention the hard to get herbs could now be homemade. Plus, more updates were released as a partner to farming. Quests, etc. So farming was more than click and grow. But the players seeking immediate benefits didn't find any (there are very few useful things you coould grow under level 30) and so they voted negatively. I'm sure if the pole was retaken now, it wuld have much better results.

I agree - I think a lot of the problem is caused by Behind the Scenes. Updates are made out to be good and end up being a lot different than the introduction made it seem. I think if we had minimal descriptions in Behind the Scenes - maybe just the name of the quest and a brief historical description, nothing about rewards - people wouldn't be so cut up over updates.

 

 

 

However, something as big as a skill needs to be done to please as many members as possible, and it was clear from the start that Farming had something different in mind. I like farming but I think it could have been made a lot more user-friendly. Much of the hassle of the skill is due to the micromanagement that was the key focus of the skill, and while that makes it rather fun, it is more of a hassle to actually gear up and go on a farming run.
