"Obama would "require" all middle school through college students to participate in community service programs; but after a flurry of blogs protested children being drafted into Obama's proposed youth corps, the website's wording was softened." (pics included)

I hate - no... I loathe community service. Pointless labor sucks.

ACTUALLY It stated in the quote that collage students that do it get 4k into their collage pay.

OR something around that, can't really QUOTE quote it.

Don't you know the first rule of MMO's? Anyone higher level than you has no life, and anyone lower than you is a noob.

People in OT eat glass when they are bored.

That's only for college kids, and it's only tossing them a bone. Anyways, what I mean by it's pointless is that the work they make you do is bogus. I had to keep score of little kids' basketball games for 65 hours because I got caught with a bowl.

I don't think they can require everyone to do mandatory service.

Integrate Service into Learning

* Expand Service-Learning in Our Nation's Schools: Obama and Biden will set a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year. They will develop national guidelines for service- learning and will give schools better tools both to develop programs and to document student experience. Green Job Corps: Obama and Biden will create an energy-focused youth jobs program to provide disadvantaged youth with service opportunities weatherizing buildings and getting practical experience in fast-growing career fields.

* Expand YouthBuild Program: Obama and Biden will expand the YouthBuild program, which gives disadvantaged young people the chance to complete their high school education, learn valuable skills and build affordable housing in their communities. They will grow the program so that 50,000 low-income young people a year a chance to learn construction job skills and complete high school.

* Require 100 Hours of Service in College: Obama and Biden will establish a new American Opportunity Tax Credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year.

* Promote College Serve-Study: Obama and Biden will ensure that at least 25 percent of College Work-Study funds are used to support public service opportunities instead of jobs in dining halls and libraries.

This clearly shows that it is not mandatory, but an option that he plans on giving everyone, and rewards those who choice to partake.

As long as it doesn't end up like the Hitler Youth (which was founded on the exact same ideals of getting children educated and helping the unfortunate) I am fine with it. I really doubt it's going to really motivate too many people.

[bleep] that...

I barley had time in highschool to get my [cabbage] homework done

College would be worse. Imagine kids who have actual jobs who have to help support their family

Throwing in more [cabbage] to do for them would be a catastrophe

I agree with the busy. Unless there're some serious education changes, we'll be busy doing the eight pounds of homework every night. I'd rather just get a job.

Don't get why it's called a "civilian security force". Doesn't sound like anything involving military or security. When I read that, I thought Obama was gonna bring back militias.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Jesus, even the thought of returning something to a country which provides so much and so many opportunities to it's citizens while also helping many unprivileged people, pure stupidity!!!!

Boohoo. I don't see you building houses.

No, I don't build houses for the poor. But instead I do 8 hours a week in a youth club in the most impoverished area of Dublin / Ireland while attending school, working in the evening, getting my homework done, playing rugby with my local club and partying on the weekend. Not hard to live a balanced life.

I'm fairly certain you don't have straight A's. I have to receive them for the rest of high school, or else I have no chance to go to college period. I wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell for a student loan (my mom works at a bank, so I sort of have a head's up in what I need to know), so a scholarship is my only way.

(I don't have straight A's either, though. I need to work on it.)

What does the youth club do, though? I've only participated in a literal house-building thing a few times this summer. Maybe...8? times.

The youth club is basically a distraction for the kids from the problems associated with the local area. The local area is suffering from huge problems with crime, drugs and poverty. The youth club basically stops the kids from wandering around streets and provides them with something to do which will help them keep off drugs and stay in school. We just play sports, pool or do arts and crafts with them, whatever they're interested in, provide food for those whose parents can't afford to or simply can't cater for their kids (prostitutes, drug addicts etc) and help them with homework or other problems they may face. Here's a link if you're interested to a topic with a lot of information on it.

If it is any interest to you, I do get mostly A's in the subjects I'm interested in and plan on keeping till my LC (final state exams before college in Ireland). Don't intend on sounding arrogant, but I was just born relatively intelligent and find it easy to learn things quickly. Unfortunately not everyone is like that.

Blow it out of proportion? They've continued to LIE! It's not disagreeing with him, it's nothing but lies and deceit....and it's coming from the right-wing.

I mean, worldnetdaily? Seriously? I might as well cite the Daily Kos.

It's not manditory and in all honesty it sounds like a good idea.

$4,000 for college for 100 hours of community service. That is roughly $40 an hour going to college! A person could do community service a few hours per week and make the 100 hour mark for the year. For students struggling with paying off college this is a huge help.

I agree.

However, he's gotta make cuts somewhere to pay for it. My guess is he'll slash some federal funding that goes to the states for education, the states will then impose some costs down to the students, and we get the $4,000 for doing the community service.

Tuition might rise as a result, but all in all it should be a net gain for students, and well worth it. Plus, as Barihawk pointed out, many are NOT going to take advantage, which would put more money in the government's pocket to pay for other things.

Realistically if you did a minimal 2.5 hours a week for 40 weeks per year, you're paying a fair amount of money off. 2.5 hours a week isn't hard to come by, a lot of people spending that much time watching TV or playing games each day.

...and making the Volksgemeinschaft, but I highly doubt Obama's on some insane mission to make a superior race in America of all places.

Good, quite frankly. Let's get students into proper work and give them a taste of the real world. I like it.

I can already make $40/hour if I wanted to, but I don't like the hours and working conditions for it
