The reason of image signatures?

Featured Replies

Is it just me or why are they even allowed?

I can't actually see any point where other members of the board will benefit from having an image signature.

It adds personality you say? Well we have avatars for that, they do function good as that, if you try do them a bit more original.

And while I'm still on it, why even show post count? It serves no acceptable reason, all it does is provoceing(spelling?) more spam, and by that boosting certain peoples ego.

Am I right, or wrong?

I'll be highly interested in answering any follow-up questions, that might have occured in your head, and I'm sorry for the crappy english.

Theres a wide variety of people in the world, some are blessed with certain talents whether it may be a voice, being able to cook, acting, social skills, leading a group, being artistic etc.. Most of these require a great deal of creativity and hard work, for example an artist would feel the need to want to express his talent in the best way knows.. Most of these artists aren't the sort of people who 'live in nice little wooden house upon a quite countryside village, who each morn' yonder to that magical hill with paint palent and canvas then sit viewing a beautiful landscape in which they express their deepest feelings through art..' in the real world painting is too boring for some, in the olden days the technology was limited and so artists were forced to use little of what they could find.. Nowdays these young artists have other interests such as computers, programs such as adobe photoshop, paintshop pro, flash, paint, and graphics gale etc. Im as happy to see computer art as much as the norm becuase theirs such a wide variety of things to do, animation right down to pixel art.

A forum is an easy way for some to transfer their talent to pictures which people can view as in a museum, but this is a forum.. cmn the people viewing are mostly more interested in the eye candy of the signatures rather then what they feel when they look at it, which is why people have signatures in the first place, if were limited to a stupid little avatar to express our creativity then this forum would just be a boring place.. A lot wouldn't be counted as art but still is a free view of creativity, remember that these people are mostly preteen.. People like The_Jeppoz, Misterxman etc are known widely for their work and creativity, oh and they're pretty decent people to talk to :D . Which is were it comes down to reputation.

Reputation is essential for any decent discussion, the post counts I recon to maintain the history of each member, its like having a group of friends and each day you wake up remembering their name and that you're their friend but not remembering why exactly you are.. you commonly realise things like 'cool, I've known him for 4 years and we're still friends.' I dunno I guess its not really a competition for who gets more post numbers but a realisation of the time someones been around, almost like someones age, someone who joined 3 years ago with 2 posts won't be well known yet someone with 3000 posts would obviously be known much more..

I think your wrong by your alligation, I think sigs are essential for a free expression of talent and show of character and posts are used as a reminder of times past, to show how long someone has discussed with fellow members. People differ, you'd argue that its not needed maybe because your not too keen on art, I love everything about it so I'd probably feel needed to say something in defence I hope I wasn't too biased.

Hopefully my opinion counts, atb ~ Ter

Sigs? Its all just a marketing ploy ;)

Do a super fantastic sig (ie: pixel with a harsh amount of detail and realisticness) and then have a link under your sig to your sig shop. Your chances of getting a good number of views would be much higher with that sig rather than a stick figure drawing.

And some people like these pixels because it can artistically show their emotions or feelings (or thoughts towards runescape, and their character) towards whatever they choose. And as a bonus to the sig sellers, if it is nice other people will notice it, see "Sig made by ___" and want to buy a sig from him/her!

Other signatures are miniature banner-like designs that give links to certain websites, larger sized designs, portfolios, threads on the forums, etc...

And another reason would be that a lot of us are proud of the effort we put into our latest piece of art, and want the community to see that 'this person is dedicated to art'.

But my reasons? Well, I just follow along with what everyone else does, and then forget to change it once it gets outdated. :) Which reminds me...

PS: Post count isn't that great, I agree, but its a quick way (obviously not always true, but to an extent it works) to see how active a user is, or how much he/she likes browsing the forums.

Plus, in signature competitions, when somebody is looking to buy something for a large amount of runescape gold, its a little easier to trust somebody with 30,000 posts (for example) rather than somebody with 1 post.

Ughh.. Venomai, Terley, you type way to much I didn't even read all that. As for me, I think sigs are like tattoo's. I get a new one everytime I have a spur of a great idea.

i think they are like god armour/gilded. they just make you look cool. post count is too show how much time you spend on these forums (if your active or not basically) and i think its kinda cool how the ranking system works :)

im very sorry u dont appreciate wat the artists on this site make...

so i guess u just gotta deal with wat other people like....

and i do not believe this topic belongs here.... seems more like a rant to me... is there a forum link here for that?

"WOAH 2 MUCH WORDSES FOOR ME BRAIN CAN HANDLE>!>!>!?!!?!1!asdf!!11!" lol...

The bad thing is, the OP probably won't even bother reading our replies. :( Especially after you guys have summed it up in 1 to 2 simple words. :)

But hey, it was a pretty complicated question!!!! :x What do you expect from me...

Just be glad it isn't all one big paragraph, or, even worse, one big sentence. It's actually quite readable to me since it's split into short paragraphs.

I personally identify people as much by their signatures as their names. It adds color, originality, oppurtunity for expressiveness, and appreciation for art. I've been to forums where text only, or no signatures are allowed, and they are just bland and boring. I have no idea why anyone would think a plain text signature would be any better than a color one.

So, I was right then?

Well, for me recognition shouldn't be based on a picture, nor should reliability be based on total post count.

You see on the old boards, I had 3000+, and wooha didn't I spam for that?

What I mean is you can absolutely gain recognition and reliablility, and that is by posting intelligent posts, not spam.

Oh, and about that artistic things, in my opinion, when people on these boards are going to make a sig, 90 % just loads up Photoshop add some pictures, changes the layer blending etc, without any planning or brainstorming at all. Or just starts to pixeling right away.

To become an good artist that is clearly not the way to go. It might however be a good start when learning the tools, I can not disagree with that.

Well?

People like The_Jeppoz, Misterxman etc are known widely for their work and creativity, oh and they're pretty decent people to talk to :D .

:P

Well i personaly think that it's always nice to have those little colorfull patches to make the threads a better place to surf into....

Moreover the owner can actualy express something about his personality...or since it's a game forum, his attitude/skills in game. Having a good sig maybe from a famous artist then might also increase your reputation but that's not the primary goal of sigs i think.

Cheers

From the time I've been away, I ave been browsing another forum, and that particular forum doesn't allow image signatures at all. And when I return to these forums, it's almost a chock when browsing through the threads, images everywhere!

I can see your point in "expressing", however I don̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâôt agree at all, as most of the sigs here aren̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâôt really that thought after or "deep".

:).

find me a forum where moste are deep.

about brainstorming i myself always brainstorm before pixeling and i even noted it in my guide that you should.

sure allot of the sigs here are random but thats no excuse to ban them.

take the RS official forum as example: there arent any sigs nor any colors.. its a rather boring place and very repetive you wont remember anyone you see there not even the people with information the only people you might remember is those who's post is green (mods)

what are the arguements against sigs?

signature_1.gif

i dont see y we even argue against people that dont like sigs....

if he doesnt like it then he just deals with it or goes to some bland ole

boring forum w/o sigs.....

Hmm..

First off I don't think they fill any valid enough reason. Secondly, ever thought of people with lower resolution, or people like me who surfs with an unmaximized window, then when each time you load a page it will quickly filled with signatures.

And heck, I dont' go to a forum because I want to see colours, I'm basicly looking for specific information.

As for the lower resolution, there's a reason why siggy width is limited to 300x150. That's small enough for any PDA in landscape mode (320 pixels wide), and larger PDAs in portrait mode.

Why would anyone surf in an unmaximized window? That's just masochism. That's like taking a piece of paper and cutting off the bottom, then complaining that you can't read the stuff at the bottom. You can't go much lower than 800x600 to play Runescape, anyway.

Plus, isn't there an option not to see siggies in your preferences?

I just thinks its his opinion, id cry with no siggies.. smoking em is such a stress reliever, you can socialise with them and girls think your cool 8) .. ... what, ohhh signatures :o I forget what your on about sometimes  .. Well I don't see the reason why we shouldn't have 'signatures', people who don't like em are in the minority and im sure it doesnt bother them that much. And its what makes tip.it, without 'signatures' and the rules a lot of people wouldn't come each and every day, there'd be no need for media discussion, media market and we'd be stuck talking about runescape.. cmn who does that, im sure people would rather play the dam game than sitting there talking about how they are going to play it.

Im not going to argue against Tynn, I have my opinions but he's not forcing them on us so im not going to force mine on him.

Lets all be friends :D

notice no one is arguing in favor of tynnhammer...

So? I'm just trying to figure out something.

I didn't mean that the signatures where bigger than the window more like they are looking pretty messy.

Browsing not maximized is maschoistic? Let me ask, have you ever worked with any other software except games, in bigger resolutions than 1024*768?

Do surf with non-maximized, because the thing is you can have several windows open without the need to alt tab or switching tabs, you immidately see changes.

Hehe, that probably didn't make much sense :P.

And as last thing, I don't play Runescape.

And as last thing, I don't play Runescape.

I take that as insult.

Well, obviously I have played, but that was many years ago, way before RS 2.
