His knee was infected with the human papilloma virus and he has some sort of genetic disorder that doesn't provide immunity to the disease. He started growing tree-like warts on his feet. He ignored the warts and they quickly spread over his body. Eventually he lost the use of his hands and looks like he's half a tree. By now you're probably thinking "Riku, are you an idiot? There's no way some guy can just be turning into a tree! You have no article, no link! What do you think you are trying to do by telling us this outrageous lie?" Last I heard he was going to get some gene therapy to make sure he has immune cells to fight it off, because currently he doesn't have them. Either that, or I dreamed the entire scenario up.
