Shouldn't users be allowed to remove posts on their threads

the title would not fit all the way but i'm making this partial rant just because i made a thread and got over 15 (yeah i counted) posts of random spam or just commenting on how i was typing in a hurry and i had bad grammar. Honestly i was kind of suprised that people lurk on the forums for the sole purpose of posting on threads making comments about people's grammar. im pretty sure normal users can't remove posts on their own threads that THEY CREATED but if they can i guess this is a pointless post if not we really should give users the power to do that

Having spent numerous years of my life managing forums, be it as a Moderator, or an Admin, I can safely say that your idea would not work.

 

The idea for a forum is that it's meant to be an Online Community, which wouldn't work if every member who made a topic had the power remove posts as they wished. If everyone had the right to silence those who posted in their thread... there really would be no point in a forum, and people would end up abusing this power.

 

 

 

People can spend a lot of time and thought in writing a reply to topics... giving the freedom of removal to the OP, would result in chaos.

 

 

 

You have a report feature, use it.

 

Let the people assigned to the task of managing the forum, do their job.

No need to. You can edit your posts to remove things, and if your talking about deleting topics, people would just start wars and then delete the whole topic. That would remove any discussion value/information the thread had before deletion and shows the whole board just wants to hide its mistakes.

If you could understand the gibberish above, either you're a freaking genius or a freaking [developmentally delayed]... I'm not sure which. If you couldn't read it, then I'm sure its point proven. You may understand what you've written, but if in 6 months you come back to it, and you say, wtf is this [cabbage], then your grammar wasn't good enough, and everyone else probably thinks you're a freaking [developmentally delayed].

 

 

 

Oh, and to the supposed main point of this thread, no, users should not be allowed to remove posts on their threads. If I spend 15 minutes on a post, and that post gets deleted without a good reason, you better believe I'm going to be angry.

 

With your problem, you may want to think before you post, read, and reread, and if anything doesn't sound good, rewrite.

Nope. Think for about a minute or two before you hit "Post". Allowing users to remove their own posts is like giving them an excuse to act immature; if I posted something absolutely stupid, and deleted it, only a handful of people would be the wiser, instead of an entire community.

 

 

 

Oh, and to the Grammar Nazis: There's always at least one spelling error when correcting another post, so chill out -- it isn't like you couldn't read the post enough to make a Grammar Nazi comment about it. :P

This system is designed to save users from having to write private messages to individual Moderators and generates single report for all Moderators with abilities in the forum. Upon clicking the report icon you will be presented with a few pre-defined reasons for submitting the report and a section to add any additional comments (comments are required when selecting an option marked with a "*"). Including a link to the post is not necessary as the system includes this information automatically. I don't see why someone should type like a complete idiot and make the excuse that "everyone can read it" or "idc u noob". I've used forums that have allowed you to delete posts in your thread, as long as they belong to you. That is probably the most that can be done by the forum administrators without causing problems for the greater percentage of the forum users.

 

If you truly need a moderator to prune your thread PM one and ask, I've seen a few prune threads full of spam.

I believe in free speech, if the thread starter can remove thread that defy his opinion, then freedom of speech is denied.

 

We give these powers to forum moderators to keep the discussion in line and keep the forums clean.

 

 

 

I don't trust that every forum user is old or wise enough to make the right choice regarding this. Hence the reason we need forum mods.

 

 

 

And if you don't want to be judged by your grammar :

 

- don't write

 

- learn proper grammar

 

- create your own forum for drop outs

Our posts are directly related to the OP.

 

We all disagree with the ability to remove posts. Iv stated some.

 

His complaint is that people are flaming him for his grammar. We're saying if he doesn't like it, he should fix his grammar, instead of using that as the sole excuse to be able to remove posts, which is stupid.
