Google Earth

Hey, I don't know if this is a repost, but does anyone here use Google Earth? I stumbled accross a 12 page thread on it on Ebaum's World forums. Anyway, it's simular to other programs like NASA's WorldWind and terraserver.com. Like NASA's, it is a seperate, free program that you download and install. Unlike NASA's 460 MB installer, this program is a measly 10 Megabites

Also, unlike NASA's lame bluish unfocused pictures, Google Earth as color photo's of amazing resolution. Examples follow:

-The Pentagon

-Hoover Dam

-EiffelTower

-The St Louis Arch

I think you get the idea

Anyway, if you want to download it, http://earth.google.com/

Post any cool spots if you have 'em.

Those are great pictures but I don't think I would use it enough for it to be worthwhile of me downloading. It does look pretty cool though (I'm watching a sample movie of the $400 version right now.)

Google had a free program that I once downloaded named "Keyhole", that allowed you to view close up sattelite imagry. I wonder if this is the same thing, just renamed.

I'd known about the maps of america for a while but didn't realise they started to do Britain too.

Still pretty bad mapping atm though. I doesn't even show the centre of my capital city (only the western edge). At least I can see where I used to play football, a couple of my old uni campuses and where some friends live.

Hopefully they will finish the rest of our cities :P

It's really good thing to do when you're bored. Spend hours just trying to find some point :P

Google bought Keyhole

same thing, covers most of the USA and England last I looked

(both roads, and satlite pics)

Google Maps is just like Terraserver. Yes it has satalite pics but it's immensly cumbersome compared to google earth. You feel like god spinning the globe and zooming in smoothly. Also it's cool, if you type coordinants in your search box (i.e. 34 4 50 N, 139 31 25 E ) your view will slowly, smoothly zoom out and pan towards that location, and in 15 seconds or so it will start zooming in and tilt your map and you will be at those coordinants. Oh and someone should type those in... you won't be dissapointed :)

Great program. Fun finding local places with roads unchecked. The images are a bit outdated though, by at least 3 or 4 years. So much has changed in my neighborhood. Found a food place I used to love going to as a kid. Still on Google Earth, but it was actually run out of business a few years back and replaced with some worthless dance studio or something.

I find it the most amusing trying to find places. For example, try to find Mt Rushmore. Hmm, let's see go to google type in Mt Rushmore map and go to images. Notice any nearby rivers or mountains? Open up google earth and try to match the map to your viewfinder :P

heh, ive been playing with this thing for about an hour now, its pretty fun to look at the big cities, especially when you check the buildings option. it brings up 3d images of a lot of the buildings :D other thing i did was look at around where i live. look at the map of the united states, the only state that has the close in zoom in the mideast is indiana :D then if you look in close on the map of indiana, youll notice that the only two parts that you cant zoom in all the way into is a small part in the south west, and a small part in the south east. turns out im not going to be to lucky at all, seeing as how i live in the south east. then i look in closer and find out where i live, and its one screen length away from the part you cant zoom in all the way to. turns out im lucky after all :D
