I enjoy politics, I enjoy what's happening around the world...I don't watch the TV news stations; typically things are sensationalized and they ruin the real story. I would much rather read articles. I don't understand why it's so hard to avoid.
January 20, 200917 yr Im getting tired of the overhyping of Obama. Im going to miss the live inauguration, wish I could see it. I dont like his policy at all but there is enough historical value to it that im interested. Im going to love when the whole country realizes obama =/= a solution to everything. Seriously, I give the guy major credit for speaking ability but oratory isnt everything and I think our government is fubar to the point no president could fix it in 8 years. I wish him well and pray we dont get any shootings to say the least. Orthodoxy is unconciousnessthe only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed.

And I for one like watching the news without him in it. If they sent the message once, that would be fine, but over and over again?
January 20, 200917 yr What I find [developmentally delayed]ed is the things that news says, like his daughters going to their first day of school. Seriously, who gives a crap
January 20, 200917 yr but over and over again? Did you watch the news ever, before this election? They repeat the same stories throughout the day on the hour, sometimes not a single new bit of information is even given each time, because they're on 24/7 (as explained by Jake). If there's 4-5 top stories during the day, they'll repeat the same 2-3 over and over, and they'll repeat the other 2-3 sometimes. It's nothing new, it just seems that way.
January 20, 200917 yr What I find [developmentally delayed] is the things that news says, like his daughters going to their first day of school. Seriously, who gives a crap Obviously a lot of people, or they wouldn't air the story. Who cares about Britney Spears' new love affair/her children? Not I, but it still gets reported.
January 20, 200917 yr Author I like Obama, he sounds like a nice guy to be around, its just that the media is getting so stupid about him... "OMG! His favorite comic books are Spiderman and Batman!" "OMG! His daughters wear shoes!" Who cares? These pathetic wastes of time are in the forefront while major problems like Gaza and Iraq are put in the background. I want to hear whats going on with the wars, not other people who may be important, but are not important enough for us to put them in front of the people dying in places. Its kind of like when John travolta's son died. It was their personal business, but the media had to make a huge deal out of it. He's famous, and its tragic the kid died, but if my son died, it wouldn't even be given a second thought by anyone outside of my family...

January 20, 200917 yr He's the first africian amercian president. During Black History Month. Trust me, to most people its a huge step for equal rights. Well, its alrerady equal rights, but still. Just over 100 years ago, there were slaves. Now this. Its a big deal to alot of people. (Though the media IS blowing it out of proportion). I don't know that much about this, though. It's just how I think others would see it. It's BS. I can't stand it another moment. The man is a decent politician and deserves the Oval Office, but he's got more hype without even being sworn in than any other president ever did. [English translation needed]
January 20, 200917 yr I agree with you, Ratchet. This is why I go on news forums/blogs/browse Yahoo/CNN/MSNBC/BBC/Al Jazeera for news articles. You get to learn about new developments, learn some new vocabulary (rarely, but it happens), and see the point of views of commentators laid out in essay format. It's far more stimulating than listening to a talking head on the TV. It's just sensationalist media, intertwined with what entertains people, blended together for ratings and money. Stick with reading, you'll avoid all of the hassle.
January 20, 200917 yr The only article that really had me livid was that he's going to be sworn in on Lincoln's Bible. I would have no problem with any other Bible. Personally, I'd recommend Martin Luther King, Jr's Bible. But not Lincoln's. Lincoln did jack crap for freedom or tolerance. He actually suspended the freedom of thousands of Americans (not Confederates, UNION Americans) and the Emancipation Proclamation freed a grand total of zero slaves. He was aware of and allowed African freedmen to be impressed into military service by their so-called "liberators" where they would have to dig trenches and latrines with no pay (ie slavery?). My heart is broken by the terrible loss I have sustained in my old friends and companions and my poor soldiers. Believe me, nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won. -Sir Arthur Wellesley

Many of Lincoln's speeches are very anti-slavery, especially the later ones. It really depends on the context and when he gave them, as I have been reading his works lately. He was a complex person. I think if you put yourself in that time, and see that a white president saying those very progressive things, he would have been considered a very brave and progressive president for his time and perhaps even hated by most whites for his anti-slavery views, though not totally condoned by abolitionists either. I think no one really knows what his views on slaves and the black race was truly. That requires getting into the man's brain, instead of analyzing his political speeches and letters. Perhaps he didn't think they were equal to whites, but the steps he took to end slavery was still something that requires that the person weigh the morality of the institution of slavery, and particularly a religious man such as Lincoln....this in itself is commendable. For someone to do what he did, while preserving the Union, is enough to recognize that person as a great President. There's a reason a lot of historians regard him as the greatest President we have ever had, including myself.

Way to have a terrible understanding of American history. You are forgetting that almost all of america was badly racist and very few wanted racial equality. The fact that Lincoln preserved the United states and helped set the groundwork for the 13th-15th amendmants is more then enough to earn him a legendary place in history. No, he did not crusade against slavery but he considered it morally wrong. For a time he coudl not be openly anti slavery because it would fracture the country even further, To Lincoln preserving the nation was the most important thing and prevent the spread of slavery was second. As the war went on anti slavery opinions became popular enough that Lincoln decided a bold move against slavery would be the best move to help the country long term. Though the Us had some serious racial trouble in the long run what Lincoln did led to a better America. January 20, 200917 yr I doubt he would have given the proclamation at all or as soon had the south not split. The South seceded because of the election of Lincoln. They knew full well of his views. Had the other candidates won, they wouldn't have seceded in the first place.

The plan wasn't to reunify through violence at first, logically.

Lincoln was progressive for his time, thinking slavery was a moral amazing. evil is enough for me to have some faith in him as a good person. The historical time frame is very important here, if the whole country is racist believing blacks shouldnt be in slavery is pretty impressive edit--also, the south began seceding as soon as lincoln was declared president so he was pretty sol as far as preserving the union without conflict. January 20, 200917 yr We have to watch it at school. Dude me too  I'm the only guy no more! Don't you know the first rule of MMO's? Anyone higher level than you has no life, and anyone lower than you is a noob. People in OT eat glass when they are bored.

January 20, 200917 yr Author LOL...at Borders, their having a big inauguration party for kids only...I'm sure putting together the book store, and a presidential speech will definately make kids line up...
January 20, 200917 yr He's not even president yet and there seems to be this pseudo cult of personality building up around him. I'm sure he's a great guy and will do just fine, and being the first black president is certainly a significant thing, but I think the media has hyped him up a lot.
