First of all Bush's father left his family a bad legacy during his run... so of course..

Well that was interesting.

 

My school has some 2000 people. I don't know how many people our auditorium can hold, but I've estimated at least 1000 people squeezed in today. Add in a few hundred people in the library, and basically the whole school was watching.

 

Thankfully I was one of the first people there, and managed to get a seat. Though no one really sat, standing ovation after standing ovation...

 

My history teacher (I mentioned earlier, he's black, and basically idolizes Obama...) was close to tears, and he gave us transcripts of the awesome speech, only about an hour after it took place. (I know, I know, it was written beforehand...)

There is a bit of a historical twist because he is the first black president but his appeal is his ability to inspire people much in the same way JFK did. JFK got a lot of attention...don't tell me, that was because he was the first Catholic to become President :roll: . Some Presidents get more attention than others, nothing to do with racism, just politics.

He was walking by one of the TVs, and another kid shut it off. The tshirt kid went, "HEY!" and then tried to turn it back on. He was too short to turn it back on and so I laughed at him. YES I LAUGHED AT HIM.

 

 

 

Oh and then my German teacher refused to turn the TV on (but told the kids they could go watch it elsewhere, but she wouldn't repeat the lesson for them) and followed by saying she supported Bush but she didn't ever watch his inagurations; why should Obama be any different. It wasn't his greatest of speeches, but it was the perfect speech for the right time. He was very specific, direct, and brutally honest about many things. I was a little annoyed at the whole 'anyone who criticised america' must hate our freedoms hern hern shtick that he's peddling... like no one in the world could POSSIBLY have a reason to not love the states.

 

 

 

Other than that, it was perfect. I especially liked Rev. Lowery's benediction. These three portions of the speech stuck out to me:

As I have mentioned, that is just wrong. How did Obama play the race card? I remember one speech that focussed on race (after the Reverend Wright controversy) one out of literally hundreds during the campaign. If he had played the race card it would have destroyed his support among the white majority who got him elected. As I've said, whether you like him or not he campaigned on the spirit of hope and on the issues to say anything else is ridiculous. I mean what do you expect him to do - come out and say that he hates black people and paint himself white so he can avoid 'playing the race card'? Also, you say he is only half-african american, so what? In years gone by, even being mixed race was enough to diminish your civil rights. Mixed race people tend to identify themselves more as black, it isn't an uncommon occurrence.

Nah, I'm think he had a teleprompter. Still, he is amazing at giving speeches, truly a charismatic guy, and that's one of the many reasons he was elected. (And if he did memorize it, that would be yet another reason.)

Contrary to popular belief, and it is quite the popular belief because they bring up how he says "um" a lot when he is thinking, Obama rarely uses a teleprompter unless it's a big speech, such as at the Democratic National Convention. He usually memorizes them. I'm not sure if he memorized this or not, though.

The theory that black people voted for him just for being black ignores that black people tend to vote democrat anyway. As many people voting for him just in order to elect a black man are equalled by the people who won't vote for him because he is black and because of the republican attempts to suggest he was somehow unamerican (which plays on people prejudices, thankfully McCain himself didn't do this but others did).

It appears your teacher is among the 22% that still actually supports/supported Bush, so I'm not too surprised that she's not psyched about a new President that's going to have to reverse alot of the [cabbage] Bush did during his 8 years.

As it's already been said multiple times on this topic, it's true that there wouldn't have been as much hype for McCain because electing an old white guy as president isn't nearly as exciting.

 

And having the first woman 2nd-in-command isn't as exciting as the first african-american 1st-in-command.

I would point out some things here

 

 

 

90% or so of african americans vote democrat, a slight to decent majority of woman are also democrats. So clearly obama energizing black voters can have a greater effect then palin energizing woman. Second, Obama did win largely because he is an amazing orator creates hope etc. but to deny that him being black helped is innacurate, just as denying that his speaking skills were importnat would be innacurate.

If anything it's implicit racial discrimination, not racism. There's a big difference. The former doesn't mean you have to think the other race is inferior, and it's implicit, being generated by the historical nature of the event rather than any conscious choice, while the latter does mean you have to think the other race is inferior.

How do you get that they're racists from that? Anyway, there's obviously a biological component to it, because skin colour is encoded in your genes. You can't identify as a black man if your biology doesn't do the work first.

He would have been denied rights just like any "fully black" person prior to racial equality in America, so it's still a huge symbolic punch in the face to racism.

Race is a biological social construct. The labels we made up didn't come out of nowhere - it came from the fact that humans have different skin shades which has to do with your genetic lineage.
