A film's age rating has no baring whatsoever on its quality. That was just a silly point.

I don't know but I could not believe the kid sitting next to me in the theater. Had never read the comic of course and thought this would be a good movie to see until another spider man movie comes out. When they show the guys arm getting broken and the blood squirting out the kid nearly threw up. It was hilarious.

Ugh. I wasn't expecting that much violence, although I guess I should have been. It didn't help that my bladder was about to rupture the whole time.

Honestly, most violent movie I've probably seen is Saving Private Ryan, or the spire through head bit in Hot Fuzz. I haven't seen many R movies - this was only my second actually in theaters (first was Role Models). I'm only 14

Why may I ask are you seeing a rated R film when you're 14?

It's just a guide, remember. My parents were shaky about it, but they let me go as long as they didn't have to, so I went with my (rich) friend. You see plenty of kids with M games, no?

Anyways, I forget where I had heard praise about the book, but I soon discovered that my mom had it - and it's a Warner Pictures 1987 copy too (plenty of first-ish ed. typos, I've noticed). Anyway, I read it, I liked it, I heard they were making a movie, and I was excited. I read it again twice in that time and this time really picked it apart and understood more of it. I was more excited. Comics are for kids ;)

I can't play M games though :( #-o :-k

Not really, almost of all of the movies that I've cared enough about to buy are rated R which would be my favorite movies, which in my opinion would be the best. So no, not really a silly point, just fact in my case. Also, I've seen more bad films that were rated lower than R than I have that were rated R.

I'm not going to do a case study to make my point but you'll find that many rubbish films tend to exploit either cheap sex or violence (which pushes the age rating higher) to try to get some appeal and market their films. Think about films that have been released after being banned and then look at how they're marketed. The whole torture-porn(sensor?) sub-genre falls into the bad films that exploit needless violence category.

Alright, I suppose that's true but I was really just saying in my experience it seems to be the case and, going back to what Mc said, 14 is a fine age to be seeing films that are rated R and it shouldn't stop him from seeing a movie like this which doesn't really contain needless violence, though it was amped up a bit from the novel. I suppose that was my point.

I'm 14 and I saw it. It's not because its R that I shouldn't see it, its the level of maturity I portray while watching it.

"LULZ! DOCTOR MANHATTANS GIANT GLOWING BLUE DANGLE!"

"LULZ! SILK SPECTRE 2 HAS FLAT BOOBIES!"

"LULZ! RORSCHACHS KILLING PEOPLE!"

"LULZ! A TOILET!"

"LULZ! CUSSING!"

"LULZ! NIXON!"

I've always found that the maturity level of the person watching should determin whether or not they see it. Six year olds should not see a movie as intense as watchmen, because it's deffinately not intended for their age demographic.

And by the way, I found this on Youtube, and think its the best thing ever:

I like the line:

"Jon will give you cancer and turn into a car."

I think the Rorschach things funny. I like Laurie reading the story to the three Manhatten's and I like that the comedian is wanting a kiss from his own daughter.

I just love the whole thing.

You know what really bugs me about the movie? How blatantly cliché'd all of the music is.

I thought it was particularly bad when they played the Space Odyssey music when Dr. Manhatten was killing people in Vietnam.

And I did notice that they were playing the song from Shrek during the sex scene.

The Simon and Garfunkle at the cemetary scene was pretty good though, had to download some of their stuff to my MP3.

You mean Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries, right?

Is that what it was called? I never watched Space Odyssey anyway, have just seen that scene where it keeps cutting to his face.

I think it worked for the scene though, you know, the whole propaganda thing to make nam not seem as bad as it was to americans.

I didn't see this thread when I posted in the Last Seen Movie thread so,

Read and watched Watchmen. The comic book was amazing. The movie was dreadful. Poor acting and bad music choices made the film not as enjoyable as it could have been. Interesting how the comic book has characters who aren't black and white, but the movie is filled with those characters. I think the only decent actor was Jackie Earle Haley who played Rorschach. Overall, I'd say a 3/5 because I'm in a good mood.

I did not leave the theater satisfied.

^^^

I'd argue on the bad acting. Silk Spectre 2 was not good, and I thought that Night Owl was alright but slipped up in spots. The guy who played Dr. Manhatten did a superb job of making the character three dimensional and sounded exactly as I would have imagined from the comic. I also thought the comedian was really good.

Now to some other things I have not seen touched on:

Bubastis does not belong in the movie. She was directly affiliated with the ending in the comic, and it made no sense having her in the movie. She also got five seconds screen time and we are supposed to feel sad when Ozy kills her? I could've cared less.

Now, its time to get to the "Blue Penis" thing and what I think of it. It shows we are all a bunch of homophobes. We apparently cannot accept the fact that over half the population of the world has one, which reviewers apparently cannot figure out. God forbid they show a naked man. It's alright for the Silk Spectre to show some boobs, but Manhatten dangling? NO! BAD MOVIE PRODUCERS!

There was never any controversy over the fact that X-Men's Mystique was a completely naked woman. Yes it did not show anything, but most reviewers would not have bashed it for showing this stuff.

Boobs are fine in a movie is what I am getting from these guys. Remember the seventies, when there was a little girl masterbating with a cross? Now remember now where if somebody put that on film, they would be condemned to an eternity of bashing.

It's like nudity is looked down on. Especially towards men. Because god forbid we be able to expose ourselves to CG penis.

I'm not saying all nudity is all right, some porn is not right at all. The point I'm trying to get across is "Why do people consider nudity a bad thing? Why do naked women not get looked down on, but a glowing CG penis get condemned to eternal bashing?".

I don't see where you're going with the Bubastis thing...she was in the book why wouldn't she be in the movie? In the book she is killed as well as in the movie, it wasn't put in for your sympathy, it was put in because it was in the book.

From what I recall, she was a prototype for the squid that attacked New York. Why would you put a prototype for the squid if you don't even have a squid in this movie?

(Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I recall from the comic, I'm probably wrong about the prototype thing, but I know she had something to do with the squid).

On your comment on acting, I thought Night Owl was dreadful. His acting was cheesy and seemed straight out of a Sci-Fi Channel original movie. The Comedian did OK, but I wasn't that impressed. Dr. Manhattan was pretty good, but I would have liked his voice to be a bit deeper; that's really my only complaint for him. The acting was not convincing and could have been much much better.
