Broken ankle

Recommended Posts

Basically, to cut a long story short, I broke my ankle on Sunday in a football (soccer) match.

I was discharged from hospital today, and am having to use crutches for the first time.

Has anyone here had a similar experience, and if so, have you got any hints for making life easier?

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.

Take like little washcloths or something soft and put them on the tops of the crutches using ductape or whatever, it'll make them softer and hurt your underarms less from using the crutches. Other than that, just follow your doctors instructions and therapists instructions (if your getting physical therapy) to make the healing process smooth and quick.

Broken bones suck, period. I've broken a few.

Was my first time even being in an ambulance. I just thought I'd dislocated it at first, because when I did it, I felt it pop, and then pressure against the side of my leg :?

Ambulance took 35 mins -.- , then 6 1/2 hours in A&E. Not fun. After all that I found out it was broken.

Anyway, I can't put pressure on it at all, so I have to keep it up resting on something constantly, which can start to get painful on the knee.

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

I've broken both my collarbones, those are a lot worse. Basically raising your arm hurts like a flying [bleep]. Do you know how hard it is to put on a shirt without lifting your arms?!?!

Yeah, collarbones are a [bleep], broke my right one twice. Now I can barley lift my right arm past 90 degrees.

I've never broken a bone, but I (think) i nearly sprained my ankle skiing today. Casing a 15 ft gap with 8 feet of air is not fun.

wow when i saw the this topic's title at first i thought it must have been something i wrote without remembering it...

I broke my ankle on december 26th 2008. Actually, i broke a bone in my ankle and a bone in my foot. Over 2 months later, I am not even nearly fully healed. I am still in a boot, and i've only been able to walk on it (with the boot on) for about 2 weeks.

Lets just say...the past 2 months have possibly been the WORST experience I've ever had. I'm a senior in high school so lets just say that this break F'd me up...Crutches are terrible...they are the most akward things ever, get in the way of everything, and by the time your done with them you feel almost bound to them (I would look for them unconsiously even when I was off crutches and able to walk on my boot).

So the side affects of this is that i easily get raged and pissed and angry (the feeling where you wanna punch through a wall as hard as you [bleep]ing can?), I get way too much energy but can never use it (all I can do is lift upper body, but i cant do that everyday, and i can't do any types of cardio workouts...Which SUCKS cuz i used to be a very active person.)...

Lets see, some other side effects are my left calf and leg muscles have completely shriveled up, so I can't wait to see how much less i'm squating when I can finally use my leg -.- ...My 6 pack has gone away for the most part, it's 10x harder to get with girls as it used to be...ummm thats pretty much it, I can't think of a single good side effect :|

So as for tips i have a few. Practice going up and down stairs cuz it's easy to fall on them. get used to hopping around on one foot when your too lazy to grab the crutches :| . Buy something to cover the crutch handles with, because they can give some gnarly armpit rashes...

Try to shower in a shower that has a bench of some sort, or take baths (idk if you have a cast or a boot though). The only excersise you can really get is upper body stuff, so try to do that every few days... Get a handy cap parking pass. Umm that's all i can think of right now i'm pretty tired..

Oh, and the best part, arthritis for life  (at least for me -.- )

Hope that helps

EDIT: oh and buy some vicodin because the first 2 weeks is the time period where your bones re-glue themsleves together, and it got VERY painful for me, so prepare in advance.

@Adrenal I have the cast for 6 weeks, crutches for about another 4, and then I still can't run or anything for about 4 months.

@Menomen We didn't actually. It was a horribly mismatched cup game. Us (Div 3) Vs Pinnacle (Prem). We were losing 16-0, and the worst thing was, this happened in the last minute of the game.

Wow, thanks for all that Rahila! The most annoying bit is that I can't put any weight on it at all. So just resting on the ground is really a no-no. I'm also (hopefully) getting a wheelchair today, for however many weeks I need it.

I've actually shattered my wrist and fractured part of my left arm. It took a whole three months to heal. Not to mention it was the most painful thing I've ever been through, even though I didn't even feel it when I broke it until I actually tried using it. About a few hours and a hospital visit later, I found out I broke it. That weekend I could do nothing since I had to have a sling until the upcoming Monday, where I was able to get a cast. It took a few weeks before I could start playing games with my broken wrist/arm again, and the doctor suggested it, to keep my fingers exercised. I lost my whole summer to this arm.

If there's anything I hate more than the cast, it's the feeling after taking it off, and how your arm feels so damn stiff. Holy crap, my arm felt paralyzed. Broken bones are not fun.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

Hmm, i've broken my collar bone, two toes and cracked two places in my leg.

Tbh, the best thing to do is indulge yourself in something you enjoy doing, you tend to block out the pain when you're having fun.

The second time I broke my collarbone I ended up in a sling for pretty much my entire summer break. I spent my first week at camp then the next week I broke it in a soccer match. My first day out of a sling was my first day of school. Worst thing was I missed being able to tryout for my school team since tryouts start about a week before school does. :?

Hope your ankle is getting better :)

[My long post]

Yeah no problem, I couldn't put any weight on mine for about 2 months like yours, which was pretty annoying :-#

But if your going to need crutches for 2 months or less, i say just stick it out and use them instead of a wheelchair. I definately got a decent arm workout everytime i used them, and i wouldn't really wanna know what I'd look like if I used a wheelchair the whole time, because I would have gotten almost 0 excersize during the day... but longer than 2 months would just be unbareble on crutches

or maybe you could use crutches some days and wheelchair others, it's up to you, hope that helps ;)
