Career Advice

Yes I know.. Asking on a runescape forum might not be the best way to go about it, but I figured I might come across somebody who has a better idea than I do. I have been researching this for 6 months and still can't decide.

Basically my plan right now is to join the military with a job that will give me opportunities when I get out, and then join the police force in 6 years. The military will give me a shoe in, but if the police force doesn't work out I have something to fall back on.

I have narrowed it down to 3 options:

Avionics technician in the navy

http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/navy/jobs ... obDetails/

pros:

being in the navy means I will travel more

I have the option to work in submarines, which will add 25k to my salary

The area is remote, which means rent will probably be cheap if I don't live on base.

Listed as priority job, so I am basically guaranteed entry.

cons:

The only air naval base in Australia is over 1000kms away from where I live.

It's 100km to the nearest major city.

Living will be cramped on a ship, however I can rent a place off base.

Even more cramped on a submarine.

hearing gay jokes from me friends

Avionics technician in the air force

http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/airforce/ ... obDetails/

pros:

There is an air base about 1 hour from where I live, and I have some choice over where I am posted.

It seems like I will get more experience with a bigger variety of aircraft.

Progression through the pay ranks seems more organized. (outlined in employment training)

I am in training for 60 weeks for employment training, then I am in training for 4 years. It seems I will get a lot of experience.

cons:

The job seems much more demanding and stressful.

The air force is more popular, less chance I will get in.

Electronics Technician in the navy

http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/navy/jobs ... obDetails/

Similar pros and cons to AT, plus:

pros:

I have heard it will give better career opportunities

cons:

Pay is about the same, but not quite as good.

The training is only 38 weeks after boot camp. It seems further training is given, but it is less structured.

Thoughts?

I don't know how things are in Australia, but I know that here in the States the Air Force is definitely the way to go if you're looking at joining the military.

Your lucky you have any kind of idea... As for me I am just saying, Oh Director/Writer. With no websites, ideas or anything to really try and become what I'm trying to say. I haven't even made a pros and cons list. Your way farther ahead then me.

Good luck. Stay focused. Never give up. \'

Any apprenticeship in the armed forces will work out. Personally I'd go the electronics technician or even just an electrical trade.

If you do an electrical trade through the army (or wherever) then you don't have to go back to the army to work. But I don't thnk you could get a job as an avionics technician anywhere else.

Personally, I want to become a solicitor (MAYBE a barrister after a few years).

If you want to join the military, I would join the band. Virtually risk-free and great money after a few years.

I've always wanted to be a Nuclear Officer in the Navy.

That's what I'm going to do, actually. But hopefully on a carrier, subs are just way to small and womanless.

Electrician was my first choice, but they said the waiting list was so long and so little jobs are opening up in the next few years they aren't taking in any more applications.

I could get a job with an airline or flying school. They won't be the same planes, but they will be similar. I will probably just have to do a quick tafe course or something.

What kind of job could I get if I did electronics?

Adrenal: I've just left school. I applied for avionics in the navy at the start of the year and am waiting for the medical stuff to be cleared. I just thought about the others and wondered about changing my mind.

I say join the Air Force in Australia. When you get out make sure you become a really special person like america's army rangers. I had a cousin who did that made like 50k a year + benefits for like 5 years. He then contracted and make like $500k USD per year. I say join contracting save up coin start a company then earn some more coin.

Wait a damn minute, YOU want to be in the military? Oh, Lord God Almighty, we are all screwed. Just as a random question, which military is it? Might help tell us when to start saying our goodbyes.

Personally, I'd suggest an Electronics Technician job. It opens more doors, it's easier to find work after the military (few civilian groups need ATs very much), and you don't have to get motion sickness every 2 weeks (flying or sailing). It's also somewhat less complicated than AT, but it's also in some ways more demanding of your attention. Remember, the majority of people who go out on missions are going to be using the things that an ET works on. Sorry about piling on the pressure, but the military's something that you simply can't afford to not know what you're getting into.

Hi Iamdan,

I' am guessing you have been to a YOU session, since you have done the medical. I have also applied for the ADF (Technician Electrical and Technician Electronic Systems in the Army).

Did you have to do additional testing? On the aptitude outline it says there would be additional testing for "Other Specialist Occupations"), would this apply to me?

I guess you have to look at the lifestyle, the pay, where you would be deployed and what ranks that can be acheived to decide which career you would want. Training and studying will go by fast, so I would go for avionics technician in the airforce.

Anyway goodluck with the rest of the application process, I've got my YOU session on the 18th...

Yeah I did a few tests that were basically iq tests. Basic math, patterns etc. None of it was too difficult. Then I did some other test (because my initial application was electrician) that was similar to the stuff you do in grade 10 science.

I got in trouble at my YOU session

Firstly because I couldn't figure out how to turn the milk off on the coffee machine, and somehow figured it turned off automatically so I just added sugar etc while milk was still pouring out.

Then we had a fire alarm and I couldn't find my "group" because of the hundreds of people in a tiny area. I got told off by some ex army guy who quit before his minimal term and wasn't even a recruiter because I couldn't find a grassy area when I could barely move around

What's your msn? my fiance' was in the Aussie defense force if you want someone qualified to talk about options. Also have an entire msn full of mates over in East Timor/ Afghanistan etc from Brisbane that you might like to talk to, all from different fields.
