PSP Go : Now True

May 30, 2009 - Sony's E3 press conference might still be days away, but it would appear one of the company's biggest cats is out of the bag -- the PSP Go is real.

Yes, for some reason the latest episode of Quore is live and features host Veronica Belmont speaking in the past tense about E3 and getting a private demo of the PSP Go from SCEA Director of Hardware John Koller. Want the deets? Well, imagine a smaller PSP-3000 where you slide the top portion up to reveal the D-Pad, Select button, Start button, and traditional face buttons. The screen is going to be 3.8 inches, the unit is 44 percent lighter than the PSP-3000, there's no UMD drive, there's a Memory Stick micro slot, it's Bluetooth compatible so that you can use a headset and link it to your cell phone, and the unit packs 16 gigabytes of flash memory.

As if that news wasn't huge enough, the episode of the show features our first look at LittleBigPlanet Portable in action (the screen is in tight on Sackboy and packing a lot of color) and Koller says that there is a new Metal Gear and Gran Turismo coming to the PSP.

In terms of the family tree, Koller said that the PSP Go is not replacing the PSP-3000 but that both units will live in harmony on retail shelves -- although he did say that Sony likes 10-year lifecycles so the PSP Go should have a bit longer life than the PSP-3000. Still, Koller said the company plans to continue to support both downloadable and retail-based games. Belmont asked if there would be different games for the Go versus the traditional PSP; Koller responded that the units will have a similar catalog to begin with, but with time, he expects there to be some differences -- like maybe developers making smaller games that are shorter experiences.

Want to get your hands on the PSP Go? Koller said that the unit is expected to ship this fall.

I read this on Hack A Day.

It looks crap.

Saw this on thesixthaxis.

As soon as I saw it I put my PSP on eBay.

Just to make sure I get as much as I can from it. I don't play it much anyway.

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.

Its attempting a kind of 'This-isnt-a-DS-ripoff' design. It obviously looks a bit like a DS, and it's taking control of what is 'hip' (at my school anyway), being slide phones.

That is the absolute most un-ergonomic thing I have ever seen save for the N64 controller.

at least this has some curves unlike the DS

The lite has some pretty sharp edges. I'm a fan of my original phat. It might be square but it's somewhat soft.

This thing is just ugly as sin.

No improvement on the analog stick front. In fact the placement looks worse this time.

However there has been confirmation of a new Metal Gear and Gran Tursimo PSP game.

Visually it sucks as well, the old PSP is far sexier than this and the DS.

Would have been logical to put the 'second analog stick' on the Start/Select button and move those upwards.

Agreed. One of the problems for games on the PSP was there was no second control stick, so camera control was hard.

Hey guys dont bash it. It looks ok, it's abusing stupid peoples possibilities of buying it because it slides.

It's got really good features though.

I've only got a problem with it if it renders the old PSP completely obselete. It shouldn't, because if developers stop releasing UMDs and switch to downloads it shouldn't problem. You'll just have to buy more memory sticks.

Download?

That will screw up peoples monthly broadband usage. Not to mention take quite a while. You probably get them uploaded onto your memory stick at a game shop or the games themselves are on their own.

I dont need a siggy no moar.

One thing I learned from gadgets with sliding mechanisms is that it breaks more easily than one-piece gadgets. And when it breaks, it's better to just buy a new one since it's so bleeping expensive to repair it.
