tripsis
I haven't posted my photos here in ages.. so I guess I'll post something :XD: These are all pictures taken in Alaska. I just got back from a 7 day Alaskan cruise. I'm sure a lot of these don't scream "Alaska" but I tried to pick the most artsy photos of the bunch since this is The Gallery and not the Vacation Snapshot forum :P [hide=8 Pictures]1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 [/hide] - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog
remoteman
Very nice mate, I particularly like the 2nd one. What does the first one look without the adjustments? Also out of curiosity, what are you shooting with? The shot of the eagle looks awesome. tripsis
Very nice mate, I particularly like the 2nd one. What does the first one look without the adjustments? Also out of curiosity, what are you shooting with? The shot of the eagle looks awesome. Thank you very much :) All images are taken with a Canon XSi. As for lenses... I used three on my trip: [*:189zwizu]Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS [*:189zwizu]Canon EF-S 10-22mm [*:189zwizu]Canon EF 100-400mm L IS The eagle picture was taken with the 100-400mm. And here's the first one without the sepia: Amazing job! Did you have fun in Alaska? My favourites are#4 and #5 :) Thank you! :) I had a great time! I wish I saw more bears and at least one breaching whale, but oh well :P I still had a nice time. I only saw one bear from really far away. I wasn't going to post the image since the quality is horrible due to extreme cropping and it isn't something I'd call artsy, but I guess I will anyway: This was something I'd classify as a "Vacation Snapshot" picture, but oh well :P I guess bears are fun to look at anyway. I wish I could have gotten a better picture of one. This was taken from the boat.. the bear was barely a speck in the distance >.< - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

Laxaria
My favs are 3,5,6,7. Number 3 with the eagle looks great, but I think you need to do some post work manipulation to make it look better. It has good potential to make an interesting stock for a photo manip. Same goes for most of my other choices. Interesting takes. Very interesting and refreshing from digital artwork and words ^_^ deviantArt | A book without a cover | My poems | My SigsI'm an artist of words. Shin
Not a huge fan of the filters on the photos, but they do look great. The only thing that is bothering me, is that the horizon line is smack dab in the center and creates tension between the bottom and the top. I don't know where I should be focusing. I think if you take the filters off and recrop the photos they would look even better. :D

She'll probably unleash them in the Photo of the Month competition :ohnoes: Mwahahaha   Well I actually didn't take any in Alaska, because I was juggling enough lenses without my macro lens :P My bag was HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAVY!!!! But I will be posting some for the Photo of the Month competition soon ;) Thanks for all the comments and suggestions guys :) Alaska is definitely an incredible place. Laxaria - I usually don't like messing with my photos that much. I've never been into photo manipulation much. I just like leaving my photos the way they were straight out of the camera as much as possible. Occasionally I convert to B&W or Sepia but that's usually the extent of my editing. The eagle picture would have been much better if I could have been closer to it. But they're not quite as daring as seagulls :XD: Shin - Thanks for your thoughts and the suggestions :) I do have a problem with unoriginal horizon line placements. Especially in Alaska where the water and sky are both of equal beauty. It's hard for me to choose one to emphasize :XD: I'll definitely work on it though. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog
Shiny
The only thing that is bothering me, is that the horizon line is smack dab in the center and creates tension between the bottom and the top. Dude, having a center shot is much more preferable than above or below, for a landscape. They do not create tension, as they balance each other with sky and water. I'm in love with number 6. The tranquility you captured is great.

woopidoo2
You rented the 10-22mm and 100-400 right? Do you like them? :) The 100-400 must be a real joy to use. I like the one without sepia most too. And the 100-400 was fantastic. Man is that thing heavy though! It is a fantastic piece of glass though. I still have about another week on my rental, so I'll probably take it out around my house to get closer pictures of deer and coyotes (and a mountain lion if I'm lucky, but I doubt it :P). - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

The push & pull system from the 100-400mm is quite funny, I had some trouble with it when I first tried it out. I didnt know there was a slider to adjust the push/pull-resistance. So I thought 'Man, it takes some strength to zoom now' :P I think I would only use it @400mm, so in case I will buy a tele zoom I would buy the 400mm f5.6 (the 'forgotten 400'). You might like this article, they compare the 100-400 to the 400. Might be worth it looking into this one if you noticed that you only used the 100-400 at 400mm ;) http://www.luminous-landscape.com/revie ... -400.shtml [http://woopidoo2.deviantart.com][Tip.it Moderator from Dec 10, 2006 to 03 Sep, 2008]

But with a range as large as 100-400, the push and pull system is probably more efficient than the twist version, I think. On my trip, I mostly used it at 400 and 100 - rarely anywhere in between. But that was for actual picture taking.. the one thing I did like about the zoom was that it was easier to locate and frame subjects while I was zoomed out. By that I mean, when whale watching, it was hard for me to locate whales with my eye and then quickly point my camera to that exact spot. When you only have like 2 seconds to get the picture, you need to be looking through your camera. But if you're looking through it at 400 when you don't know where the whale is, it's hard to spot the whale when it decides to come up. So the easiest way, for me, was to look through my camera at 100 then quickly zoom in for the shot when the whale pops up. Same thing for birds in flight. Screw it.. I'll just get the 400mm f/2.8L  But seriously, thanks for the article, it was an interesting read. And the difference between the pictures is incredible! If I ever decide to take the plunge, I might just get the prime. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

If your new to photography and want to go straight into a DSLR, you can pick up a Canon 1000D, or a Sony A200, something beginner for about $500US. IT will come with a basic kitlens, which is all you need to start shooting.
tripsis
1 and 4. Great photography, how much would I be looking at to buy some kind of camera for this kind of stuff? MrShiny answered your question pretty well. The consumer DSLR's will be around $500. I have, however, seen some incredible pictures taken with point and shoots as well. My particular set up was: [*:3pp0ka1p]Canon XSi DSLR (body only) - $600 [*:3pp0ka1p]Canon EF-S 10-22mm - $650 [*:3pp0ka1p]Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS - $135 [*:3pp0ka1p]Canon EF 100-400mm L IS - $1575 As you can see, that's very expensive. For the landscape shots, the 18-55mm IS works just fine. While I liked the 10-22m, I didn't find it necessary to have over the 18-55. Most of the time I found myself shooting between 18-22 anyway. If you buy the Canon XSi with the kit lens, then you do get a discount and it's only like $684 or so. Other good options are the Canon XTi ($500) and the Canon XT ($450). I haven't used anything other than the XSi but I've heard great things about all the ones I mentioned and those that MrShiny mentioned. Also, if you buy any of these used, you can get them for a few hundred dollars less. One thing I would like to mention, is that several of the older models (XT and XTi, I believe) have a 18-55mm kit lens. This is different from the 18-55mm IS kit lens that I use. If you ever decide to buy one of those older models, I would buy the body only and then buy the 18-55mm IS lens separately. I have never used the non-IS version, but I have heard that the IS version is better in almost every way, and not just because it has image stabilization. I've heard that it focuses faster, is generally better built, and has better image quality. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

eckered
i also do my shooting with my XSI, and i can say that its well worth the cash when your starting out. grab the stock 18-55 as well, make sure it has image stabilization. if you want to get a superzoom lense, go for the cannon 70-300 WITH IMAGE STABILIZATION. any lense you get should have IS. image stabilization just finds motion and corrects blurry lines. its only disadvantage is that if there is no motion, it can create it untentionally. the obvious fix is to just turn it off on your camera. duh. also, the 70-300 sigma AP0 DG i have is crap, DONT buy it. tl;dr: the best bet for an entry level photographer on a budget is... cannon rebel XSI cannon EFS 18-55mm cannon EFS 70-300mm cannon EFS 10-22mm wop wop
