If slavery was legal...

Featured Replies

Just to point out some things on slavery, black people think it was terrible and bad and all that, but really the pain and suffering of slaves was for nothing, they got freedom in the America's (eventually). But, something I want black people who complain that white people are idiots for doing slavery to know is that without slavery, most of the black population in America would have stayed in Africa. They wouldn't be over here, they would be living in wherever it is that they were found. Most of the black people in America today would probably never have been born because of the harsh conditions of Africa taking a toll on their ancestors who were not picked up by the white folks and shipped to America.

So, to tell the truth, I think slavery is the best thing that could have happened to the black community. Without it, they wouldn't be where they are.

I would not take slaves purely because I don't think it's right to take a human and make them work for you. Who needs slaves anymore anyway when we have as much technology as we do. I can plow the fields with a machine now.

Using that twisted logic the Holocaust was the best thing that happened to the Jews as it gave them an impetus to form the state of Israel. Telling black people to be thankful for slavery is truly mental, I would LOVE to see you say that to a black person in real life.

He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart,

The suffering itself is horrible, no argument against that, but the result of the suffering definitely can be beneficial. It's just a matter of weighing them out - is the suffering worth the result?

I have Native American blood and I am thankful that America became colonized and became what it is today. I wasn't the one who had to suffer - my ancestors were. It's a stupid stigma to make it seem like slavery, something that happened generations ago, hurts our current generation. It's something we need to learn from and let go of instead of holding onto it dearly. It only serves as a grudge against white people today - the ones who had nothing to do with the slavery.

still he does have a point.

No he doesn't. Africa isn't the horrible dying continent that it is depicted in the media - not all of Africa is ravaged by famine and poverty like Zimbabwe or Somalia. On top of that, the America that awaited the freed slaves wasn't exactly welcoming - African Americans are still disproportionately living in poverty in America - so what difference has it made? Poverty is the same the world over when you get to the root of it regardless of whether you're living in a tower block slum or a mud shack.

Except those Africans came from places such as Mali - one of the poorest countries in the world. America has much more career opportunities, medical care, entertainment, innovation, etc. But neither of us can speak for other people. They might prefer America over Africa, or vice versa. It just comes down to the individual. But personally, I'd much rather live in the US than Mali. I'm sure Obama feels the same way.

Valid argument but people have to remember that not all of Africa is like Mali. There are some incredible success stories in Africa that aren't well covered because they aren't as newsworthy as a famine or a war - which are usually the only items that get African nations mentioned on western news programming. Of course America has greater opportunity but I don't think that can ever excuse slavery (not that America was the only nation involved I might stress).

Hell no, I wasn't saying it was an excuse at all. Sorry if it came out that way. I just think that some good might have come out of slavery. Like if you get kidnapped and tortured then finally escape, you'll probably appreciate life a lot more. It's no excuse to justify torturing someone though, just an optimistic point of view that can be held by the victims. I don't agree with Ratchet that it was the best thing to happen to them, but I do think there is a good side to it.

Most of the slaves were from Senegambia and Côte d'Ivoire.

As for how nice they are, Cote just got out of a civil war, and Senegambia apparently has governmental problems.

And to sum this up real quick, we were doing a project in school where we had to interview someone we knew about a historic period. Well, let's see what all the black people did:

-Segregation

-Barrack Obama Election

I swear to god that's all they did.

It seems like the three biggest events in American history that affect the black community the most are:

-Slavery

-Segregation

-Barrack Obama

And it seems like that was all they cared about in school. We start talking about the great depression, World War 2, and the effect it had on stimulating our economy. They don't care, "This is boring, let's learn about segregation" they say.

Segregation is as boring to the white folks as WWII seemed to be for the blacks. "This march happened here..." "She did this..." "He talked about stuff..."

They seem to focus on the worst stuff they possibly can, perhaps because the white people are supposed to feel bad for something we had no control over since we were kind of born a bit to late to do anything.

Also, to the black people in my class, it seemed like they said "Move over Abraham Lincoln, here's Barrack Obama, the first black president!" When we did the project that made us interview people about a historic event, most people picked when Obama got elected and one of the last questions? Do you think he's the best president.

"Yes. He will do great things for this country..." So on and so forth. They seem so narrow minded to the fact that he has done absolutely nothing but be a media [bleep]. No, it's because he's black (Which I think some of them should understand he's HALF black, which doesn't actually make him black, it makes him white too...he's multi-racial).

I don't know, I'm just taking this from real life experiences. I know tons of good black people, and I'm best friends with one, but it seems that their are tons of ones who don't give a damn and complain because they live in the "hood" and all that crap. It's not like people are making you live there, that's a path you choose for yourself. There is very little racism in the school system (I mean teachers and such don't care, kids can be quite bad) and they can go to college and live in the giant house in L.A if they actually saw past sports and rapping...the easy ways out. I want to be an actor, but I don't sit back and school and say it will happen, because I know my chances of that are slim. I work towards getting good grades and towards my "normal" job.

There is no racism above, I am just pointing out plain and simple facts based on 185 days of being in a class with 26 other blacks.

The second you separate two groups based on their skin colour and start bashing one of them, it's considered racism. If I learned anything from going to a "ghetto" multicultural highschool, it's that all the white people who have the same mentality as you end up having careers at the local McDonalds. If you can't put yourself in someone shoes even after 185 of headbashing and facepalming... #-o

I have white blood and Native American blood. Native Americans are greedy to make casinos just because of something that happened in the past, and the white people were immoral for stealing their land. Is this considered racism or just a statement? That's along the same lines as censorship - even if something might be true, it cannot be said for fear of being labeled a "racist".

By your own definition, that was racism too. You brought up a specific skin color and talked about it in a negative manner.

Why should you have to? I'm sick of feeling sorry for people for no reason.

Native Americans are greedy to make casinos just because of something that happened in the past, and the white people were immoral for stealing their land. Is this considered racism or just a statement?

...racism. You can't just judge an entire skin colour based on what others (mostly of higher power) of that same skin colour does. Just because the President invaded Irak, doesn't mean all Americans agreed with him or even had the same morals as him. Not all Native Americans have casinos and not all white people readily steal land. If you start classifying people based on skin colour, you come up with prejudice and excuses to enforce things like slavery. If those individuals who had slaves didn't have prejudices towards black people, slavery would never had happened.

Yes, I wanted to show how annoying and unfair it sounds to those of the same skin colour.

Why should you have to? I'm sick of feeling sorry for people for no reason.
Once you completely understand and empathize with someone you hate, it's easy to be indifferent towards them. That's my strategy for not going insane with some people I'm forced to live around.

You might need to find a "Forum for Rednecks" to get anyone to say that they would.

What makes them inferior? Is this a case where they just aren't Christian?

Besides, unless you owned a factory where you needed plenty of dumb labor, who would need/want a slave? And over the long run, would not a machine be cheaper?

"Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security."

Support transparency... and by extension, freedom and democracy.

Not all of them have, but what about the ones who have? I don't think it's racist to bring up skin color anymore than it's sexist to bring up gender. If you start making statement such as, "Black people are all thieves," then yes, that is very racist. However, saying that you don't like when the black people in your school treat slavery like it was the only important thing in history, I'd say you are pretty justified so long as you don't look down on the entire race for that.

If you start classifying people based on skin colour, you come up with prejudice and excuses to enforce things like slavery.

Not necessarily - you can be different but still equal. Black people are generally more athletic and white people are generally better at business. That doesn't mean either race is better than another though.

Yes, I wanted to show how annoying and unfair it sounds to those of the same skin colour.

Okay, I didn't know you were just making a point. Sorry.

Why? What is so hard that you nor your family can't do and need a slave for?

Haha, that's funny coming from your background. I know your ancestors are not responsible for your actions, but this is ... funny.

Basically he'd be a lazy-[wagon] teen who uses his slave to compensate for his lack of social skills. (Thats what it looks like from here anyway)

If slavery were legal, I would buy as many as I could then accidentally ( ;) ) free them. I think freedom is one of the greatest things about life, so everyone should be allowed it.

Can't remember what I had before, but I'd only get them to make me meals, the rest of the time they can do what they want, just as long as they get me food.
