July 10, 200917 yr How about a debate forum, where people are free to do researched, proper, smart debates, rather than do it in off-topic. This way you could implement rules exclusivley for the debate forum, for example, posting only stuff like "I agree/disagree with this" could get you a warning and whatnot. Yay/Nay?
July 10, 200917 yr This has been suggested many times before. My point is, of course, that it was obviously disagreed on before and it isn't likely to get through this time either.
July 10, 200917 yr While it may not be exactly what your thinking, the Debate Club has a pretty mature regular base. You may find it to be just what your looking for. RIP MichaelangelopolousThanks to cowboy14 for the pimp sig!
July 10, 200917 yr Author While it may not be exactly what your thinking, the Debate Club has a pretty mature regular base. You may find it to be just what your looking for. That's based on RuneScape though. I wouldn't have suggested this if that was in general discussion, which is what I'm looking for.

I don't know much about off topic myself but it seems a debate forum wouldn't add much. Right now every thread is full of people voicing their opinions much like a debate. (I'm going to let off topic mods reply to this one, hopefully I gave a good laugh.) RIP MichaelangelopolousThanks to cowboy14 for the pimp sig!
July 10, 200917 yr The offtopic forum just isn't that big, a large proportion of the posts there go into "debate" style topics(maybe 1/3-4/7). If it was overflowing with debates that pushed everything out of the way then one could be instituted, but that's not the case.
July 10, 200917 yr Honestly I don't feel there's a need. You can have a mature intellectual debate in Off-Topic easily. If there are posts which are not deemed mature enough by users, then they can merely ignore it, or report it if it is spam. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)RIP Michaelangelopolous

If there are posts which are not deemed mature enough by users, then they can merely ignore it, or report it if it is spam. Exactly. I find great debates in OT, a separate forum would only serve to fragment the users. "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti

Is it possible to create a subforum in debates then, I too have also wished for an off-topic type of debate, but I don't think it'll get the attention we want it to under Off-Topic. But thats me. Could be a possibility? Why build a subforum for off-topic features in the RuneScape section? It just seems unnecessary when Off-Topic is more active, and achieves a good amount of attention in debate topics as it is. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)RIP Michaelangelopolous
July 12, 200917 yr Besides that, there's no guarantee that creating a section for more responsible debating would actually keep out immature responses. July 12, 200917 yr I like the idea, a lot. Rules eliminating unsourced claims would make for an excellent base in which people could have intelligent debates. It would also keep only people truly interested in debating in the room - perhaps a situation similar to the role playing forums could develop, where people must read the rules before posting?
July 13, 200917 yr I'm split. Off-Topic usually have those debates, It could be nice. ~ HYT Chat Rules (Click Here): Read before entering the chat. ~| Former Clan Chronicle Editor | Former Clan Improvement Member| Former TET Member |
July 19, 200916 yr I would agree. While OT has several Debate-like threads, I think it would be nice to see a forum for people who want a serious discussion. I do notice that OT threads often contain humor and the like, but aren't frequnetly posted with serious and supported ideas. Don't hate the poster, hate the post Currently: Being Awesome.RSN: Magel0maniacPM me if you wish.
July 21, 200916 yr In my opinion, when a debate is contrived, it loses it's values. The true debates are the ones that pop up out of the blue. I've seen much better debates in Rants, General, and Off Topic than in Debate Club.

I doubt that it would get the same traffic, and as Zierro said spontaneous debates are usually better. "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti
July 21, 200916 yr I just checked out the debate club that already exists for runescape stuff, and I don't see a higher quality of discussion than regular OT. Actually looking at more topics there the level of debate is lower than some of the OT debates.

If there are posts which are not deemed mature enough by users, then they can merely ignore it, or report it if it is spam. Or just dont read my posts at all :) And to be honest, Off Topic itself is just a board with lots of discussable threads which turn into light debates, unless some idiot wants to think he knows all by insulting someone, which then it turns into a flame war.. I dont need a siggy no moar.

Actually looking at more topics there the level of debate is lower than some of the OT debates. That's mostly because the topics that are opened there are crappy.
