Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince [REVIEW]

I think there's 2 sorts of fangirls for HP.

1. The sort that adore the books but also love the films just as much or even more - they fangirl over the actors and actresses. These are generally the hormonal female kind who are easily manipulated into Twilight fangirls.

2. The slightly nerdy kind that know the books almost off by heart and hate the films because they don't follow the books EXACTLY, or really screw it up and add things that weren't in the books.

I'm definitely the second kind.

3. The sort that takes the logical route of thinking in that they can learn to appreciate both the books as books and the films and films, and don't freak out when every little thing isn't kept the same. These kinds tend to know more about directing and filming as well as literally aspects of the stories.

;)

The problem is fangirls and logic are kind of... opposites.

I think that's more of an average, grown up fan who isn't a rabid fangirl like me

lol people actually paid to see this after the last crap they put out?

These are guy's who know the size of Hermoine's teeth and what book they got reduced in. I don't think it's a stretch to say they'd go see a movie.

For your information, I saw the movie and I was not the one who answered specifics about the teeth question. And I'm the one defending not being so literal with details from book to movie.

I don't expect every Runescape person here to like harry potter, but don't try to use the "they're addicted to harry potter so they'll see the movies everytime even if they're crap," card. They are actually good movies (I would only rate 1-4 good) and the 5th and 6th ones have fantastic acting in them, especially for such young actors.

People will appreciate movies in different ways, but I think everyone should understand that films are not books and vice versa. The movie is based off the book, not a carbon copy.

Calling the last movie "fantastic" forces me to ignore every argument you have. Good day sir.

While we're discussing generalizations, Harry Potter fanboys fall under two categories:

a) people who need to watch more movies

B) people who need to read more books

Apparently, it's possible to be both as shown by this thread

Tbh a lot of the male HP fans I know are the sorts that just watch the movies because they're too cool to read or just like [cabbage] with explosions.

Average dudes I guess.

I've been around a lot of HP fangirls though before and they really DO adore the movies and squeal over Daniel whatshisname. I think it just comes down to hormonal teenage girls =/

The difference with Twilight is that not just girls do that with HP. Boys do the same with Hermione/Ginny/Luna (she's lovely in the movies <3: )

Movie went about as slow as the book did. A couple exciting parts, and those were short and exciting. The rest was pretty dull.

It could have been better if it didn't follow the book, and Harry just went to muggle-England, bought a gun, and popped a cap in each and every Dark [wagon].

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Half-Blood Prince is by far my favorite book.

Haven't seen the movie yet, and I may end up liking/not liking it for entirely different reasons than I like the book . . . mainly the character development and exploration of Voldemort's past and motivations (only 2 memories? Weak.)

Two rather unimportant memories compared to what was ditch too, to be perfectly blunt.

Really? So the memory of slughorn telling tom riddle about horcruxes means nothing to the plot? Awesome.

And who the hell cares about Voldemort's mother or how the ring came to be. It's destroyed before book 6 even starts and voldemort's heritage really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

I swear, I hope you never become a director. You'd keep in such crap. lol.

Still, they need to explain where the hell the horcrux went to don't they? :?

PLEASE don't tell me they're saying there's only 6 or something

@Outsanity:

That's compared to what was ditched. I never said the should be ditched instead. In true HP6 fashion they almost could've just had Dumbledore telling harry that through his "extensive travels" he has learned that Voldemort created a number of them, thrown him the ring and diary saying these are the first, and then progressed to diving into the memory where Tom sees the locket and Cup. And his interview at the school. Those two alone would fill the void of how many are left, and most likely what they are, apart from the snake and harry of course, but whatever.

I'd put money that they write it in that Hermonie pulls some stuff out of thin air about V's attraction to Hogwarts and how the rest are items from the founders, etc.

And just an addition, not including them all creates plot holes they last movie(s) will struggle to fill in any kind of logic manner.

They'll do it in the final story. If you haven't already noticed they're making the last book into two films. It's not because it's a long book, it's because they are going to finalize the story by filling in the missing pieces of the puzzle. Most probably, everything you wanted from HBP will be in DH, only better.

When the series is over you can make your final verdict about PLOT, but for now let's be grown ups and judge a movie on how well it tells the main story (which all of them have) and how well the acting/cinematography is. =-/

Just because the series isn't done yet doesn't mean each film is excused for having horrendous plots. What are you thinking when you say crap like that?

I hated this. My girlfriend wanted me to go see it with her and it was just three hours of basically no action. Although I was kind of biased because I don't like these types of movies, I still enjoyed the other films much more than this one.

Ooooor, most likely they'll skip loads of stuff so they can put in some extra snogging, a couple of car chases and some super cool special effects >.<

They didn't have horrendous plots. You're being a drama queen, really. Each movie told the story the book told, they just didn't keep in all the insignificant details that the ridiculously crazed fans want to see. If you want to hate the films because you think they leave out "plot points," that are so super important to the overall story, then wait until the overall story is told before acting like a baboon over it. And really, the fact of the matter is, the movies can't be that bad when they are still to this day breaking more and more box office records. Remember too, J.K. herself said she gets imput on what makes it in a what doesn't. When they were filming the first two even, I remember watching an interview where J.K. was telling the writer of the script that "this and that HAVE to stay in, it's important to the plot though I can't say why because it's in book 6," (which at the time wasn't released.)

In other words, Rowling has made sure that the important stuff to the plot stays in. Whether you agree or not is really irrelevant since she's the one that created the story and knows every word and detail I'm sure loads better than any of us do. If she hasn't spoken up about being unhappy with story changes or cuts, then maybe the director and script writers are doing the right thing.

But the thing is, I can sit here and debate till I'm blue in the face, but some of you guys are just so orgasmically in love with all the details of the book you'll never step back and see it from a directorial point of view. My suggestion to those folk is just to keep reading and quit watching.

The reason why the movie sells is because of how much the book have sold. *No one* would watch the films if it wasn't for the books. Blind jerkoff fanboys like you think it's so awesome that you enjoy the fancy long wands and the horrid acting but only because you read the books. Every person that hasn't read the books hasn't have a clue what goes on in the film because the director expects you to already know the plot.

These movies are a product of laziness and greed. And suckers like you only fuel that.

and lol @ you actually believing what Rowling said. She's a sellout writer and can't care less what happens to the movie as long as she gets her cheque at the end of the day.

Sorry I have a stupid question to ask, since I never read any of the books, just saw the movies.

[hide=potential spoiler]but why is the title called Half Blood Prince, and it didn't even relate to anything in the movie other than helping Harry out in the potion class? (maybe I was being careless and didn't catch things in the movie, so bare with me please. :-# )[/hide]

Epic argument there buddy. Maybe in six years when you turn 18 you'll understand what I'm talking about

[hide=Possible answer]I think it is because the book had more of a focus on Snape than the others. Haven't seen the movie yet, so you'll be able to tell me if Snape says that he is the Half-Blood Prince (Witch Mother, Muggle Father).

That is only my thought on the matter, is probably right anyway. Since you normally don't get the whole point of the book's title til the end normally, when the subject comes into more significance, Goblet of Fire being an exception. Because when you think of it, the Philosoper's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban (Sirius), Order of the Pheniox, Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows were only discussed throughout the novels at times, not too much, but enough, and then nearer the end, they play a bigger part.

Again, that is only my thoughts on the matter, make of them what you will.[/hide]

Best movie so far by a mile.

I really can't find much to complain about besides the lack of closure. What little there is in the book is pretty much dropped. But overall it was very well done. Didn't feel at all like two and a half hours, which is quite an accomplishment considering how low-key the whole story is. Compared to OotP, which just blasted through everything and took a hit for it.

And I can see Harry gaining access to Dumbledore's collection of memories in the next movie, and making the educated guesses Dumbledore made in the book for himself. They've got plenty of room for it with two movies left.

Actually, I saw the first film far before I even touched one of the books. And secondly, since I am an actor I don't see movies for the fandom anymore so much as I see them for the acting and the cinematography. If you honestly think you can put your worthless words into my mouth and tell me why I choose to see the films then you're really not worth the time nor the energy and your opinion loses all credibility.
