Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince [REVIEW]

I saw the movie at midnight when it came out :)

[hide=My Review]I loved the movie. It's my favourite Harry Potter movie so far. As expected, it certainly wasn't as good as the book, but it's very rare that a movie is. I thought the movie was very funny, which was also unexpected. I found myself laughing a lot. I have three gripes:

  • [*:3av900tp]Harry and Ginny's relationship had NO development. I don't like how Harry was attracted to that girl in the beginning, and then almost excited about Romilda liking him, and then suddenly head over heels for Ginny. I also thought that Ginny was very.. awkward.. maybe that's not the right word, but I guess she always looked like she was trying to be seductive toward Harry and she constantly failed at it (like the whole Room of Requirement scene...? That was just weird to me.

[*:3av900tp]The memories... I wish we would have seen more of them. We only saw two: the one of Tom Riddle at the orphanage and the one of Tom Riddle asking about horcruxes. I also don't like Dumbledore's response to horcruxes. He was like "This is worse than I could have ever imagined!" as if he never expected Tom Riddle to use horcruxes, and then suddenly he says that he's close to finding another, as if he had known for a while..? That made no sense to me.

[*:3av900tp]The ending. I would have liked to see an impressive fight with the Death Eaters at Hogwarts. I don't like the way Dumbledore died (with Harry just standing there.. that's so not something that Harry would do. Even if Snape did act like he was going to handle things, Harry would have wanted to help or something) and I don't like that they skipped the funeral.

Other than those things, I really liked the movie.[/hide]

[hide=Response]Having more than two memories would have seemed repetitive. Like I said, the movie was just too short for advanced development. The ring, Tom Riddle's house... it would have all taken too long.

As for the ending, I've also commented on this but I'd like to address this again. Once again, it would have taken too long for development. Also, we'd have a Good VS Bad stereotypical battle which I really... really, hate. The absence of a prevailing "Good" presence (aside from the people on the lawn raising their wands to ward off The Mark) can be a good thing. There's been too much of it in the previous movies (Order of the Phoenix, anyone?) and so this was a necessary change.

As for the horcrux thing, Dumbledore may have thought there were only two. When he heard that there may be seven, he would have thought of something strange which he had previously seen but dismissed, and it now occurs to him that it may be another horcrux.

The next movie, the last one, will have much more development and should please some of the people who are at this point in time... in disagreement.[/hide]

Harry stayed put because dumbledore gave him strict orders not to be seen or to give away his hiding spot for any reason. Harry would NOT disobey dumbledore. So no, i don't think you're right in saying harry wouldn't just stay there. Also, Snape didn't really give a lot of warning about the curse. It's not like harry knew what was really going to happen.

Either way, dumbledore ordered him to stay hidden and that's what he did.

I liked the movie, moreso than I remember enjoying the 6th book. I recall the book as being too focused on the romance, until actual story development came in, near the end. The movie focused on the romance as well, but it worked much better to serve as character development for the limited amount of time allowed for the movie, and was taken more comically. I also loved Slughorn

If asked to see it again (for free of course) I would - it is a very good movie, and one of the best in the movie series. And if I see it again I'll do a full review :P

PS. Near the end, when Snape revealed he was the Half-Blood Prince, a kid sitting behind me goes; 'What's the Half-Blood Prince?'

I lol'd.

It would've been just as easy for the director to stay true to the book and have Dumbledore freeze Harry and cover him with the invisibility cloak during the end scene.

Zaataar.png

I saw the movie, I liked it a lot. The last two movies have been a lot better then the 3rd and the 4th. I like the director, and I am happy to know he will be directing the last 2 movies. I will have big expectations for both parts of movie 7, with two parts it better cover almost everything ;)

99 Hunter - November 1st, 2008

99 Cooking -July 22nd, 2009

99 Firemaking - July 29th, 2010

99 Fletching - December 30th, 2010

It would've been just as easy for the director to stay true to the book and have Dumbledore freeze Harry and cover him with the invisibility cloak during the end scene.

That's subjective, I think. In my opinion if he had done that a lot of people who haven't read the books would've been confused as to what had happened. (Even in the book you don't realize exactly what happened until after dumbledore dies and harry realized dumbledore froze him because the spell wears off.

It just seems MORE complicated to me, and I understand why Yates changed that bit. It's not needed, at all. It's just another tidbit that only crazed fans care about. Not needed at all and yet people want it anyway just because they can. You have to think at it from a directorial point of view and not the view of just another obsessed fan and protector of ever minor detail in every book.

I have a lot of issues with the movie... mostly the lack of rather important concepts for the 7th...

[hide=stuff]1. Harry never found out he inherited #12 Grimwald Pl. How are they going to work this into the next movie, or is it just going to be scrapped in place of them wandering the wilderness forever?

If it is, then say goodbye to Kretcher and their lead on the true locket then... kind of a fail way to handle a rather critical item, since RAB signed the note that I'd assume also goes unanswered since they find the answer to that Q at Grimwald Pl too...

2. The Burrow got burnt down, when now I would assume means there's no wedding.. without that the mentioning of Bagshot and knowing Dumbledore, etc and their link to the Sword of Griffindore is lost.. and that's also their turning point to leave and start hiding

3. You never meet the new minister, which is the prelude to all the "random" muggle destruction at the start, but w/e. I'm sure people unfamiliar with the book knows wtf happened there.

4. The whole H/G and R/H concept failed hardcore. I mean srsly, Harry almost kills Draco and Snape lets him run away? BS. Nice...

5. The lack of the DA+OP V DE in the end is just messed up. I agree that the presence of DE is pointless without having some kind of a fight of Good V Evil, despite how cliche or overworked it might be.

6. The memories, you really need the memory of Tom killing the witch and stealing the Locket and Cup, otherwise how the hell does Harry determine that the other Horcruxes are items from the founders, and in essence the snake too. That's explained by Dumbledore to Harry 'bout the same time, etc.

And I really can't be bothered anymore. Looking at it from an outsiders view, none of the next movie will make sense, unless critical items are handed out on a silver place... like he actually DOES get the sword, etc as it is told in the will. And actually, since you never see the funeral, people will probably be "Wtf.. where is that?" when Voldermort goes to get the wand, etc.

At least you actually see them take Ollivander, I guess that's sometime.. but still... all in all, the movie failed to deliver on way too much critical information so the last movie actually make sense.[/hide]

Lastly, I wasn't very far away from walking out on this film, and I'm kind of wishing I had.

From a directorial point of view, yes I semi-agree once they get there... although HOW they got there is a different issue. Much with the amount of ground he is now going to have to cover in order to make up for existing massive plot holes he created for himself but skipping over what seems like unimportant tidbits. The scene with the chick at the start would've been better spent cover the fact that Harry had inherited sirrius' stuff, etc. But not, replace it was crap which wasn't even in the book. Bravo, excellent directing there, although I should really be attacking the writers there mostly *shrug*

And TBH, the girl who plays Ginny is ugly.
Blasphemy :o

I wouldn't use the word ugly, but her face is so... emotionless.

As for the movie, I thought it was excellent, but the ending was horrible. What's funny is from the reviews I've read, a lot of people love the movie, hate the ending, or love the ending, don't like the rest of the movie.

Emma Watson/Hermione

Agreed. The ironic thing is that Hermione's supposed to be kinda ugly, or else Harry and Ron would've been all over her from the beginning.

That's because she was 11. :|

Eh, she's cute, but not hawt...

I never did get into the sixth book. I read the first five, which was a chore, I guess they were alright. I never could read the sixth or seventh ones though. Maybe it's because they were too long and boring.

I guess the movies are alright. I'm waiting for this one to come out on DVD because I'm waiting to see the worst movie ever made, GI Joe.

No she's not. No where in the books does it say that. All it says is that she has unkempt brown hair and is a book nerd. And maybe ron has had a crush on her since the start (Which I believe he has). Either way, in book 4 Rowling explains hermione as stunning when she's in her dress for the Yule Ball. She was only 14 then. If a 14 year old can look stunning, even if it is in a prom dress, then she was obviously very pretty to begin with, just not very kempt.

And Bonnie Wright is very beautiful, she's just a mature beautiful. Her face isn't emotionless at all, she just doesn't try too hard when she acts like a lot of them do. She may not be your version of sexy or look like Megan Fox, but she's still beautiful.

She had the size of her teeth reduced in book 5 or 6.

Pretty shallow as well Gauper, only falling in love with people over their looks, someone will never get a gf.

Bottom line is, if the directors stuck to literally every little detail from the books then each movie would be a 5-6 year long project and would be bad FILMS. You have to see it from a filming standpoint. You just can't keep certain things in, and honestly, if you care about the fact that hermione had buck teeth in the first few books then you need to just stop being immature. Never in the history of the world has ANY character from ANY film fit the description of a book version of that character down to the last detail. It's just impossible. Emma Watson is a fabulous actress and getting better with each film. She really IS hermione, just as Bonnie Wright really IS Ginny. In fact, when I read the books I pictured Ginny to look almost exactly like how they have her in the film.

Doesn't sound too bad. I've never liked the movies past the first two because it simply gets too hard to fit it all in, and thus I being a Harry Potter Fangirl, get extremely pissy over things they miss out. Or even worse - things THEY PUT IN THAT WEREN'T IN THE BOOK!!@@@ *rage*

I agree with you 100%.

I'm also mad that they skipped the big fight after Dumbledore was killed. I was all ready for it and then they just ran out of the castle. #-o

I'm what you'd call a Potter Fanboy, but come on, you have to look at things from a Director's point of view.

The 5th one was amazing and the acting was superb. The woman who played Umbridge was flawless.

Of course that's only my opinion and you have yours, but I'd like to point out that the midnight premiere for this movie set an all new record at the box office for any film ever released, even beating out The Dark Knight.

These are guy's who know the size of Hermoine's teeth and what book they got reduced in. I don't think it's a stretch to say they'd go see a movie.

For your information, I saw the movie and I was not the one who answered specifics about the teeth question. And I'm the one defending not being so literal with details from book to movie.

I don't expect every Runescape person here to like harry potter, but don't try to use the "they're addicted to harry potter so they'll see the movies everytime even if they're crap," card. They are actually good movies (I would only rate 1-4 good) and the 5th and 6th ones have fantastic acting in them, especially for such young actors.

People will appreciate movies in different ways, but I think everyone should understand that films are not books and vice versa. The movie is based off the book, not a carbon copy.

I think there's 2 sorts of fangirls for HP.

1. The sort that adore the books but also love the films just as much or even more - they fangirl over the actors and actresses. These are generally the hormonal female kind who are easily manipulated into Twilight fangirls.

2. The slightly nerdy kind that know the books almost off by heart and hate the films because they don't follow the books EXACTLY, or really screw it up and add things that weren't in the books.

I'm definitely the second kind.
