Mine is a mixture of letters and numbers, having to do with my name and heritage. Can they use any type of those hacks to find people's names, if mine has part of my name in it?

If I remember right mine would take a number of years to crack based on the complexity of it. If anyone could post a link of that thread, it would be much appreciated (I suck at using "Search").

Well, I didn't talk about brute force attacks. Theoretically, any password can be cracked. All you need is time. The great thing is, it would be a waste of time and effort if you used it on Runescape.

 

This is true, however the amount of time it would take is completely unreasonable for example, using a 20 letter passworld there are exactly 19.9 octillion combinations and it would take 639 billion years to crack it with the best of software.

I know what you're looking for. It was a suggestion to move the bank pin to login, among other things, and someone posted something there.

Anyway, I'm curious as to how secure an English word backwards would be? For example: Giant monkeys->614n7 m0nk3y5(leetspeek)->5y3kn0m 7n416. I'm not sure you're very informed on internet security, or on theoretical probability. First, it is impossible to crack a 20 letter password with the current super computers,why? Because in 631 billion years the sun will have exploded and the earth may or may not exist(but probably not for other reasons,such as asteroid impacts) Furthermore, you make the assumption that I haven't memorized my password,which I have, and since it isn't a dictionary word it won't be cracked. Furthermore, you would most likely need a botnet to event attempt to crack an rs password due to the restrictions on how many times an incorrect password can be entered. Your post is completely unnecessary and shows that you are uninformed on this matter.

*sigh* No. But mugging, murder, theft happens everyday. My point was noone will murder you for your runescape account, but if they see you taking money out of an ATM machine on an empty street, maybe they will...The risk for a runescape account isn't worth it, and the whole point was practicality, and its not practical someone would risk jail time for runescape pixels..

So, you are under the delusion that somehow these hackers...

 

 

 

A.) have super computers which are needed to crack small passwords in reasonable amount of time.(The reason I say this is that even with a fast computer that has multiple cores will take over 30 years on any password over 12 letters. Even if it is a dictionary word.

 

 

 

B.) These hackers also manage to get your AIM username,terrific. I don't see how they managed to get that, seeing as even on tif people rarely have their aim username in their profile.

 

 

 

C.) I don't know why you brought up a discussion about crime,thats fairly irrelevant if you weren't talking about killing someone for their rs password, and if it was I bet your password length won't help you there.

 

 

 

D.) Your original post's methods of creating secure passwords are flawed. As long as you use words you are limited to 26 different characters,whereas if you add a number you get 36 possible charachters. And since we got to the discussion of AIM passwords, you forgot to mention that by capitalizing the first letter in your password and adding a number at the end, you sore up to 62 possible charachters, making even a 10 letter password secure.

 

 

 

E.)Most of this info is given to you when you start to make a password on nearly every secure website, and its insulting to think that we haven't heard "Don't use the same password for more than one thing" if you want to make that point valid maybe show some numbers why? I posted a link on the previous page pertaining to the length it takes to crack various passwords given a different amount of characters.

 

 

 

F.) If anything this thread merely has us revealing our password length. Actually making it far easier for someone to hack us if they really wanted. Along with the fact that some of us have our e-mail/AIM posted in their profile... Well if you know enough about internet security you can see that your thread could theoretically do more harm than good.

 

 

 

G.) The comments that you have posted are actually INCORRECT regarding password security. For example, when D Jay99 said that he had a 10 letter password you should have jumped all over him seeing as that isn't very secure at ALL. I recommend at least 12 letters in a password as the difference is quite a lot.

 

 

 

H.) If you decide to delete this comment due to your "moderator" title I will be truly sad. This info is of vital importance and if you aren't better informed on the matter people will be at risk even more so than before.
