Alright, my friends, heres the deal. My brother is a huge [wagon]. As him coming home from getting his masters in computer networking (IT i think)

 

And he decided to pull an awesome prank on me. He has blocked Runescape across all the LAN or LINKSYS or whatever we have. Which has been really really really annoying.

 

So now I have really no access to Runescape. He wont unblock it, and my dad is too lazy to help. Any suggestions here, guys?

 

EDIT: its blocked on both windows computers, which Theres restricted acess to, and my mac mini, which has unlimited acess except Runescape, obviously.

Its gotta be this. Resetting the router did nothing but take out my internet for a half an hour. Umm, for operating systems, The mac has OS X 10.4.11, and uses Safari

 

And both the PC's have Windows XP, and they both have Internet Explorer and Firefox.

 

Any help here? Is there any way I can tamper with security options with the PC's being off limits to something like that?

Maybe your brother blocked it for a reason. Maybe your dad told him to.

Inside the router settings you can block specific websites for a certain internal IP/MAC address. Since Runescape is blocked across all the computers you've tried, I'm going to assume that he just set www.runescape.com to be blocked across all IPs. One way you can test it would be to try and get to the Runescape website through a proxy, although I don't recommend actually logging into the game as all of your data would be sent through a 3rd party. If you can get to the runescape homepage through the proxy, then it's definitely what I mentioned earlier.

 

The bad news is that there are only a couple options to try and fix it. One option would be to log into your router's settings page and remove the restriction, while the other option would be to re-flash the router's firmware. Option two basically nukes the router back to its factory settings, but if done incorrectly it could brick the router so I would recommend against it. Option one would require you to know the router's login and password, but there's a chance that they might still be the default username/pass is your brother is as lazy as me. The general steps to login to any router are as follows:

 

1. In the address bar, type in: http://192.168.1.1 (basically, the IP address of your router)

2. Type in the username/password

3. You're in, try to find where the restrictions are set

 

The IP address of your router may be different than mine, you could try googling for your specific router. The default password for Linksys routers are usually some combination of 'admin'. Try using admin as the username with the password blank, and other combinations of those. However, if the username and password were changed then it's pretty much hopeless.

Did you say you have a linksys router? Type in the IP address of your router and find this page (hint: access restrictions). It took me about 5 seconds of looking to find it.

Mmh, I can get to Runescape via a Proxy, but to my knowledge there no known proxy to me that can run java so its not like I can just play runescape that way. I'll have to find out what specific router I have, and attempt to remove the restrictions, but if that fails, I may have to do some research on this re-flashing.

First rule of troubleshooting --- what are the *exact* symptoms you're encountering? Can you access the site at all? Does the client load, and then never get past the "looking for updates" stage?

 

Micro$loth has made troubleshooting this sort of thing notably hard for many users, since IE tends to just say something very generic like "I can't open the page". I'm not sure how Safari plays ... it might not be any better. Firefox, for example, will often tell you if it can't find the servername (a DNS issue), or the server timed out (a firewall or other connectivity issue). It may also say, in some cases, something like "zero sized reply", which is usually indicative of some blocking software (e.g. a proxy, perhaps).

 

Can you do "ping runescape.com" from a command line? In Winblows, this is Start > Run > "CMD" (or "Search" instead of "Run" in Vista and, I assume, W7). In Mac, you'll need "Terminal" which I *think* is under Accessories, but I'm not sure on that OOTOMH and am too lazy to Google for it ;-)

Applications>Utilities or ⌘ Space and search for Terminal. :)

I just thought of something that would probably work. If you pushed the reset button on your router earlier to no avail, try holding it down for at least 30 seconds. On most routers this will reset all the firmware setting, not just reboot the router. It's similar to holding down a computer power button vs. just pushing it, only instead of force shutting down like on a computer, all the the settings are erased on the router. After you do this all the router settings will have to be re-entered, but I'm sure you could convince your parents that your brother is capable of doing it. Joke's on him.
