HD Hell

Grrrah, I need to vent.

For Christmas I got an HDTV, which I was grateful for, though a bit annoyed that its pretty small compared to my old one. I hooked my Xbox up to it, hooked up the HDMI cable, switched it to the HD setting, and, what do you know, it doesn't work. The result is a pixelated mess, on any setting.

Now here's the part I'm really mad about. While this cable is technologically capable of showing an HD picture, MS has decided that I need a different one now, one that I'll have to pay for.

Now a regular HDMI cable can be like, $10-$15. But nope, you have to buy the Microsoft one, for around $50. It'll be a cold day in hell when I pay $50 for something I already have, especially something thats $40 overpriced. I'm normally against this kind of thing, but I may have to steal a cable. Not that I won't pay, you understand. I'll leave a note and the due $10 on the counter.

So you're going to hurt the retail store for something that is completely Microsoft's fault?

I don't think so, I didn't pay for mine. I think they do sell extra clothes and stuff for your avatar though, which is pretty useless.

I heard there was acheivements in games that unlocked clothing for Mii-ripoffs...I mean avatars.

There's a thing nearby thats run by MS. That's where I'm getting it. I wouldn't do it to a company like Best Buy, a company that actually seems to give a [cabbage] about customer satisfaction.

Hey, it's a hell of a lot better than Gamestop. Some guy tried to sell them a new copy of MW2 the day before it came out. The fact that they actually considered taking an obviously stolen game aside, they would only give him $24 for it.

80, really? MS or the or not? The MS ones here are on sale for $45, though thats still way overpriced.

And Jaerk, what the hell are you talking about with that first sentence?

- Assert myself more. Forget "An eye for an eye." You take my eye, I'll take your head.

Im talking about a regular HDMI cable that is worth $10. I had to buy it online because Best Buy was overpricing them buy like $60-70.

Hmmm. For the MS one I could understand, because the prices I guess are partially determined by MS, but thats just ridiculous.

There is no difference in HDMI cables. The Microsoft one won't help you any.

Check the obvious things first like if the cable is plugged in all the way, the TV is on the right station, ect... Which I am sure you have done a few times but it doesn't hurt once more.

If that doesn't work you might have to play around with the settings on the TV or on the 360. Everytime my friend brings over his 360 we have to do a series of steps to get it to display on my TV which is only 720p, since the other TV he has it hooked up to is 1080p. Also I generally have to change my zoom setting on my TV for it to look right.

The 360 should have come with a component/composite dual purpose cable. Hook it up via both, and have the selector on standard. Then in your settings set it to 720p for now, turn it off, hit the selector to HD which means you have to switch to your component input on your TV. If it works it means your TV can handle getting analog HD signals from the 360 just fine. Turn it off, hook up via the HDMI cable but leave the component plugged in (you can unhook the video composite cable if you want). Turn on your TV to your component station (which it still should be on), then see if the 360 has an option change your output to HDMI, if so choose that and then switch to your HDMI station and see if it works. If it does then you can choose to put it up to 1080p or whatever the max is your TV can handle.

That's just what I would do if I was having that problem, I've never dealt with an HDMI cable for the 360 though so I don't know what kind of display options you have.

Buying an microsoft cable won't be any better then the one you've got now.

The more expensive ones will give you better quality, but the cheap ones should still work.

Make sure your not setting the display options higher then the TV can handle, otherwise it won't be able to handle it and stuff up.

I think it's worth paying for a good cable though, as it gives you good quality, i bought a $100 Gold HDMI cable, and it works great

lololololololol.

Seriously you fell for that spiel about "OMG $100 GOLD PLATED MONSTER CABLES"? There is no difference and you can get the exact same kind of cable online for like $10. Best Buy over charges on these things because they can (what's another $100 if you just spent $2500 on a new TV) and because it is what brings in the most money.

Stupid people will continue to be stupid and waste their money on this stuff.

Well, aren't cables just metal wire surrounded by rubber? I mean, how much can that be anyways...

Yeah, I don't really understand the difference between so called expensive and cheaper ones, except maybe durability (as in, they don't tear as fast or something), though I don't think people use their cables in an oven while throwing scissors at it.

Also, is your TV Full-HD or HDReady? I remember FullHD means you could go up to 1080p and HDReady (what I have) goes up to 1080i. The difference is in the letter.

For cables under around 20 feet you will get the same quality from the $1 cables as the $100 cables. In fact, there were no differences between the 6ft $100 monster cable like someone mentioned above and an unwound metal coat hanger with two HDMI heads soldered to the ends.

In distances above 20 feet you may have to worry about attenuation. Still, you could get by with a nice $20-$30 cable (which is about as cheap as possible for those lengths).
