Who cares what they choose to rap or sing about? Don't listen to them, easy enough. You could say all country music is about is getting drunk having incestual relationships and talking about getting drunk and having incestual relationship, but that's just a stereotype, as I'm sure you know.

 

Think about it, there aren't many rappers out there or hip hop artists who talk only about money, [bleep]es, and cars. I mean if you don't count Soulja Boy. Some of them are actually decent rappers about things in life that happens to most of us, so I'm guessing you just don't listen to "popular" music cuz you're too "indie" for it. Sad.

Uhh, I like guys like Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Immortal Technique (not that any of them are really all that underground). I've recently been listening to P.O.S. a lot as well, big fan of his stuff.

 

Basically stuff off Def Jux and Rhymesayers. There are a lot of others I listen to as well, but those are the main ones really.

Probably not hip-hop as much as folk music with rapping, but Asa is my favourite hip-hop artist. Also Nujabes, GZA/Genius, DJ Shadow, J Dilla and Madlib.

Uhh the closest I get to Underground hip hop would be GZA, Asheru, MF DOOM, Cannibal OX, Das Racist, and V Double O.

 

Most of it is not really underground though.

This song is ok, once in awhile. But when this song is on the radio ALL [bleep]ING DAY LONG, then it gets annoying. I just wanna smack Jay-z with that piano and stuff the microphone down the girls throat.

also I've been enjoying a few rap albums as well, but I'm not quite sure if artist as akir, binary star and j dilla are considered underground, i also enjoy mobb deep and wu tang clan but im pretty sure they're fairly popular

The culture is heavily influenced in the music, where the artists would make a positive and project a good image for the genre instead of marketed music. You would see much more creative beats, interesting lyrics and you won't have a hook every 64 measures in the the song for filler.

 

Its not because they haven't made it, its because they choose not to and feed the fans of what they want to produce and not what the industry expects of them.

Well clearly if its not mainstream it most likely wont have a label, or is signed to an indie label. Also when artist aren't mainstream they usually aren't wildly know outside their home region (City/state). When I say conscious hip-hop I'm talking about artist with meaningful lyrics, etc. You can say underground but that could cover anyone who hasn't made it big. The two overlap, don't get me wrong, I just feel the impression that this topic is more about conscious hip-hop rather then just underground in general.
