Hello, Tip.It Staff...

While browsing the forum this morning, having just arrived via the website, I had totally forgotten that I hadn't logged in. Well, I go to hit the reply button, and get reminded of this ugly little fact, only to be as equally made an ugly shade of angry. How, you might ask? Well, when logging in, you don't get to come back to where you left off. Worse, you instead get dumped at the forum index, which is both counter-intuitive to posting and rather disruptive to forum traffic flow as it sometimes isn't possible to remember the forum section that you were in when you had to sign in. Particularly when you've been reading a 3+ page long thread that you just happened to notice from a slightly stale copy of the forum index that was loaded at a point >30 min. before things could actually be viewed. (Frustration by IRL distraction, much?!?!?)

In short, I'd personally like to see the restoration of a function that this forum had back on PhpBB (both versions 2 & 3) ... When in a thread on the forums while not logged in, it should be possible to hit the reply button and get a login screen, and once the proper login has been submitted, get dropped back exactly where the person who hit the button left off... It really can't be that [ble-e-e-e-e-ep] hard to do something like this, can it?

BTW, if this already exists, somebody wanna show me where the [bleep] it gets flipped on?!?!? I wouldn't be surprised if this is in the ACP somewhere, and someone just missed it... <_<

I find the back button endlessly useful.

Login > back > back (tada on the page u started at) > refresh (so it relaods with u logged in)

problem solveD!

Not exactly... While it might work part of the time, that kind of move does not always work... :(

And anyway, don't you think that's just a bit convoluted, when a simple and small cgi could be instead put in place to properly log-in and redirect a person back where they were? :-?

BTW, yes I understand that means a little work to put it in place if such a function isn't already present. But IMO, it will definitely be so much better ultimately for both forum usability and functionality. Might even result in a little growth in the community, because word would spread of how nice these forums are. ;)

In my experience re-directing log ins is a complex business and requires a bit more server power. As obviously everytime you get sent to log in it has to first read where you came from and store it, to then regurgitate it after u have successfully logged on. Factor in failed log on attempts where it has then got to realise you did not come from the login screen to the login in screen but instead the screen before that and it becomes even more complicated.

Plus the question remains does the forum software even support such an action?

And in what situation would hitting back not work? I've never had it not work, the only times it wont work are midway through a form where ur sending post data and such

Do you actually have cookies enabled?

The forum actually already does exactly what you're requesting. It will take you back to the page you were on previous to logging in when you login - I literally *just* tested this using Firefox Private Browsing. Something on your end is clearly preventing this.

While I haven't looked exactly into how this feature works, it seems fairly simple to me. I assume it saves the page you're on each time you change page into a session variable, except if the page in question is the login page. If it's the login page then it will leave the variable unchanged and redirect you to it upon login.

Also, who really uses CGI? :D

Yes, I do... "forum.tip.it" is "Permanent Allow" in my cookies. :)

Running both FF2-series and FF3-series here, and never gotten the redirection functions you speak of... And no, nothing on this end is blocking... I double-check with AdBlock Plus... I am noticing the Forum System is throwing an EXTREME amount of JavaScript Errors, though... Aha! Knew it! Problem's yours!

Loosely quoted in code tags from my FireFox's JavaScript Error Console:

Error: Loader is not defined
Source File: http://forum.tip.it/index.php?app=core&module=global&section=login
Line: 139

Error: ipb is not defined
Source File: http://forum.tip.it/index.php?app=core&module=global&section=login
Line: 88

I'm doing NOTHING here that could touch those, so I'd just about bet those items aren't properly designed for non-IE browsers... Any bets there's trouble elsewhere in the IPB Forum Systems? <_<

Pretty much, yeah.

Ever visited a business website? Tons of CGI going on with some of them. :P ... Nice joke to crack, though. ;)

What addons do you have?
Just checked that... all of those others deal with the FireFox user interface... I did just, however, find an item that's running afoul of my "*facebook*" ABP filter...

http://forum.tip.it/public/min/index.php?charset=iso-8859-1&f=public/js/ipb.js,public/js/ips.quickpm.js,public/js/ips.facebook.js,public/js/ips.signin.js,cache/lang_cache/1/ipb.lang.js

If this is what's doing it, I'm gonna be worse than angry... No one should ever link FaceBook crap into a forum's login system! <_<

(p.s.: The problem had better not be mine due to my utter hatred of FaceBook... That filter saves me from way too much trouble.)

Yeah get rid of that JS block in whatever way you choose, should fix it.
Guess I'll have to try a whitelist on that single item, even against my better judgement... :(

It looks like you're blocking most of the forum JS.
Nah, that's the only item falling foul of my filters. And only because of the FaceBook Social Networking crap. I personally think that kind of stuff should never be in the same script file as major forum code for logins. (Privacy/Security concerns, anyone?) I don't need (or want, for that matter) FaceBook seeing what I'm doing. Maybe Peter (Pure_MageUK) can fix this?!?!? :-?

<*goes to test that whitelist idea...*>

UPDATE: Alright, just tried unblocking that, which would remove even that last single accidental block against the forum JavaScript code... NO effect... THIS PROBLEM IS NOT MINE, IT IS YOUR PROBLEM! Please check the forum base code and figure out why it won't work in FireFox! My system is clean of anything causing trouble!

I've tested this feature on a wnindows 7. xp, vista and 2000 machine and even OSX - I tested in IE/CHROME/FF and Safari/FF on the mac. All log you in at the page you were last logged in on.

Asides from the Windows 7 Machine, these are all test machines with basic anti-virus installed with little default settings changed. My Windows 7 machine, which is locked down fairly secure - is not causing an issue either. it's not an IPB/TIF issue

If you're that paranoid of facebook, Delete your facebook, and stop worrying about them ;)

Hmm. My computer brought me strait back to this thread when I logged in. Win 7 here.

Also, people replying stuff like that isn't flamebait, it's information for techs. :)

Also, just maybe, if all of us are not having an issue, it might be showing that it is on your side.

Then I'd like to know what on the web is filtering my traffic, because I've got nothing here that should be preventing me from landing where I left off after login. Perhaps just an FF2-series (and FF 3.5.7) incompatibility here?

I NEVER have had a FaceBook, NEVER want one, and NEVER want their code near this PC. Sorry I didn't make that clear enough. :( ... What ticks me off worse about them is they are trying to get onto everyone's page code, and that's what ultimately resulted in a hyperblock with ABP against anything even containing the word "facebook"... Hell, I'm surprised this forum thread is still rendering for me. :-?

It works on Firefox for me. Have you tried starting it in Safe Mode just to see if any addons are causing the trouble?

I highly doubt your ISP is to blame, it sounds like you have your computer locked down for "Security" - so it's probably within a custom setting regarding that.

Going to extremes like that to filter anything remotely mentioning to a website such as facebook - makes me feel with extreme certainty that you have blocked something preventing the feature from working like it does for everyone else. if you dont have a facebook, no need to block facebook, they are for the most part harmless. Social norms including privacy ARE CHANGING.

@ meol & Das --- Again, I already went through and checked everything, even tried that whitelist idea to remove the one thing that did fall foul... Unless those who are handling the base mechanics of the forum tied this item I'm not getting into the BurstNet Adverts, I don't have anything left that could possibly be creating this anomaly at my end. And that includes my about:config settings. :!:

At this point, I'm going to ask for a thread lock... Seeing as no one in the Admin Coding Staff is willing to develop something that would never have an anomaly like this surrounding it, there is no longer a point to this thread being open... I'm outta here. <*De-watchlists*>

It's not that we are unwilling to code software or things to better the forum - we do lots of coding projects.

But as far as we know and can tell- this feature EXISTS and works for everyone but YOU - and theres no need to make a special coding feature for you since your problem is a minor inconvenience at best and reasonable workarounds (back+f5, history) do exist

i'm going to leave this topic open - just to see if any one else has the same issue. I'd love to hear if people can use the login redirect feature and it works or if it redirects them to the index.

1) It works for me too, on FF.

2) Please calm down. This is a forum to get help, not to spew rants. People are using their spare time to help you, and I would suggest that you appreciate that instead of getting yourself worked up.

3) The problem is on your end.

4) We won't code in anything that already works on functioning computers, and demanding it won't change this. However we would love to help you find out what's wrong on your end. :)

You're accusing me of bigotry, how ironic. It's a nice attempt at argument, but your responses are facile and asinine, if not diatribe. Who's arrogant now?

There's no two ways about this, it's a problem on your end.

I've just logged in on my laptop now which is running Server 2008 R2 x64 with Firefox and was returned to this page. The way this is coded simply means it cannot be browser specific anyway (unless you're not allowing cookies to be stored).

Also, the Facebook code is for Facebook Connect which is compatible with this forum as a login method. It's not "bundled" together with major forum login code for the simple reason that there's no "major forum login code" relating to JavaScript at all. That "single file" is just a PHP file with many JS files fed into it so that it's only one HTTP request, and it also compresses the code too. The forum actually works (albeit it not all that prettifully) with JScript fully diabled. In fact, let me just run a quick test.

Yup, thought as much, you can login perfectly fine with JScript completely disabled and be redirected to the page you were on. Not only that, with JavaScript turned on and looking at Firebug's console, there are absolutely not JScript errors on the forum. Every now and again one of the adverts will throw one, but it doesn't affect the rest of the forum at all. This redirect feature is entirely PHP based, and depends only on our server side PHP (which is clearly working due to the fact you wouldn't be able to stay logged in without functioning sessions at all, not to mention redirection works fine for everyone else) and on your browser's ability to maintain a session ID cookie.

Well I just tried it on my computer here. I logged off while browsing this topic and when I logged back in I am redirected to the forum index. I am not bothered about this though as my computer is ancient, I am still using Windows XP service pack 1, my cookies are enabled and Jscript is on as well.
