And I went to Future-Shop and they had them for a whole hour before running out of ones. Why didn't Microsoft just make more?

I'm guessing they wanted more hype :?

No... its because they are having the international release. The 360 is being released everywhere on the planet within 2 weeks...its not plausible to have tons and tons ready to sell everywhere on Earth.

Same hype was used at last year's Christmas with Xbox and Ps2 :?

There is nothing about spreading out the sales that makes the hype more. Its because its physically impossible to produce as many as they need for a decent price on time.

It dosn't make sense to decrease production to increase hype. That's like opening less movie theatres when a popular movie comes out.

Not having very many doesn't make people who weren't going to buy it all of a sudden want it. All it does is make people who want one wait longer.

Mr Putter, the store had them for sale for an HOUR!?!?! Jeez! Wow, lucky dude, LUCKY.

I'm not a big consul player these days but my room mate is. At 7pm yesterday he left to wait at the local Super Wal-Mart for the midnight release. He got there and there were 25 people in line ahead of him, even though he was 5 hours early. Soon the manager came out and said they only had 18 systems to sell :/

My friend comes back heart broken and I point out that there is a Target nearby, they open at 7am. He has class at 8:30am so if he wanted to wait outside all night he could get one. He was out the door before I finished my sentence and I called my friend that worked there for a count on how many units they had. They had 6 premium and 10 of the cheaper version. It turns out that my room mate was the 14th person there and the 16th arrived at 8:20pm.

Over 11 hours before the selling of the 360 even began, every unit in the city of 50,000 was essentially sold. It was 12 degrees Fahrenheit (-11 Celsius) and that̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s without the 15mph wind chill. Freezing rain fell at 5am. No one ever left the line.

About 12 hours later, and 20 minutes before class I am brushing my teeth noting that there's a blizzard outside. Suddenly my door is opened and a frozen, exhausted, nearly unconscious roommate steps in and literally collapses onto the floor. Clenched in his frozen hand is a large white and green box and a receipt. I help him up and he tells me that the first 6 people took the 6 premiums so he had to get the cheaper version, he was very disappointed. I gave some hot coco advising him to shower and change since were down to 20 minites or so before class but he lauphs and turns on the TV "No way in 'heck' am I not starting this thing up before I go" Here's what I noticed as the system was set up and turned on.

- The system is smaller then the original XBox but the power supply was MASSIVE. Cut a normal XBox in half and that̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s the size of a the power supply. The electrical cord running to the power supply was as thick as my thumb. Yea, were talking power here.

- The controllers are very GameCube-like. Extremely well balanced and identical to the Cube's controllers but above the right analog (C stick on Nintendo) they have 4 buttons for your thumb and instead of just one L and R button there are 2 of each. Also the controller its either wireless or it uses a USB connection. :? Very odd to see them on a controller but this is MicroSoft and you can use them on your PC if you want. Cool.

- He put in ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬ÅCondemned̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ

I wish...I don't see the 360 dropping its price until the PS3 comes out. Seems like a marketing stunt Gates would pull...

Marketing stunt? When it comes to marketing if there one man in the world I wouldn't question it would be Bill Gates. I think he knows what he's doing when it comes to these sorts of things

Oh you misunderstood...I meant marketing stunt to mean an amazingly spectacular move that will put him ahead. Think about it...PS3 is released at retail price (estimated at either $400 or $450) and Gates drops the price of the 360. It would be amazing.

(Ask me later about the rumors concerning Halo 3 and the PS3 ... Gates is a marketing genius :P )

Horrible shame on MS for creating a shortage ....

I'll wait for the revolution or ps3 (whichever comes out first) and THEN get the 360

Then I'll wait for the next console and buy a revolution if it's cheap enough :P

I don't want Xbox 360. I want the old one :o

Ahh...I would imagine that would happen soon. I wouldn't be surprised if the prices dropped after Thanksgiving for some nice Christmas sales.

I'm hoping for a $99 USD drop so that it would cost as much as Gamecube.

theres no reason for them to do that, people are willing to pay $400 for one already. the more they have now, the more they can sell at the top price. if they wait till later to sell them, they are only getting maybe $300 a piece instead of $400, and it would cost the same to manufacture.

There still is no way around the truth that they deliberately created a launch day shortage

The average high school kid doesnt really understand how this all works, no offence to many of you. Let me lay down these undisputable facts.

- Microsoft is literally making them as fast as they can. CNET has sources saying that workers in China are literally taking the products from the end of the assemby line and immediatly putting them on 747s flying them overseas. (at great cost compared to shipping them)

- If you know whats in the Box you would also realize how hard it is to build these things, you can't just go and buy 10 million processors from a supplier and wire them to a mother board and call it an XBox. These units are literally personal Supercomptuers running at well over 10 Ghz with entirly custom parts. You cant supply 50 million XBox's that are entirly custom made with componants that most supplies can't even begin to imagine how to build. Only a select few, smaller companies make these parts which also explaines the higher price tag.

- Proof of the aforementioned fact is the "Premium" $400 version and the "Core" $300. The entire reason this strange system excists is not so poorer kids can buy the cheaper one. It excists because Microsoft simply didn't have the time or resources to produce and assemble several million full sets. They sold the ones they had then started giving stores a simpler, cheaper version so they could try and prevent shortages.

Granted, they could have pushed the deadline back a month or so but the multi billion dollar Christmas season startes in 3 days. They were cutting it close enouph as is.

By the way, I don't know why I'm arguing for Microsoft. I'm a Nintendo fanboy :)

Anyone checked ebay lately? Even the Core system is going for $600+ USD... This is the same thing that happened with the PS2 when it first launched. This shortage thing really does seem like a marketing technique, since they could have just delayed it. Im not saying they aren't working their butts off making more, but I feel they could have done a better job... especially since microsoft has plenty of money to spare.

Oh and Im sure they will do anything to beat the ps3, including a drastic price drop, and halo 3 when the ps3 is released. I think microsoft may have the upper hand this time around, but the ps3 is more future-proof in my opinion (blue-ray, anyone?), not to mention sony has another year or so to work out the final specs.

If you watch G4, or even read big video game websites, they all currently say they don't look much better than current-gen systems. That is only because these are the first games, they will look much better in the future. Even battlefield 2 or half-life 2 look on-par or better and they have been out much longer.

Oh and I think madden 2006 looks NO different from the xbox and ps2 versions, with a few exceptions of some reflections on the helmet and a little lighting effects here and there...

Pure waste of money to me, i'll wait until they go down to very cheap

Pure waste of money in what regards?

You can buy normal X-Box down at BlockBuster for $140.00 and 360 costs $530.00. Normal X-Box is just as much fun as 360, only rich spolied people would buy it when it comes out. It will cost like 200 in March

Maybe people who have jobs and earn money can buy it also , not to mention it's a hell of a lot better than a normal xbox. Stop being jealous and get outta my thread.

~cyclonetwist, the ps3 has a release date of spring 2006, and knowing sony it will be 2007. No thanks, I'd rather play games now then wait 2 years for games of the same quality.

~Google90, yes you can purchase just the core or premium package ($300, $400 respectively), but many stores dont' have them in stock and are sold out.

~mr_peasant76, the core is $300 in USA and $400 for the premium.

Woops i used Canadian prices and said they were American. sorry guys

Anyone else notice how unbelievably noisey it is? I didn't really notice it while play CoD thought ti was just bg noise, but I paused the game and wow...

Surely the tv and controller cables are 10 feet again?

:P Just stretch it out as far as it'll go

(Oh wait, you have a wireless controller ;) )
