Get a notification when somebody quotes you on these forums

Recommended Posts

I always thought it would be nice if there was an option (not mandatory) to get a notification from tip.it (whether on here or by email or both) whenever someone quotes you on these forums. This way you would know if someone quoted something you said in a topic you haven't posted in and you wouldn't have to fish through topics that have tons of posts to see if anyone responded to what you said.

So I have two questions for you:

1) If you had the choice, would you choose to get notifications whenever someone quotes you?

2) Do you believe it is a possiblity that Tip.it forums could do something like this if they wanted to or is it just something that can't be done?

I would: it make the forums far more interactive.

This is something that I've seen on other forums, I believe. I'm not sure though, whether or not TIF would support it or not.

I dont see it working or being useful.

99% of quoting thats done "properly" (eg thur quote button and thus has the post id etc etc) is done directly into the same thread, and given that you posted there you should be interested and thus checking it anyway.

Quoting from one thread to another is usually a copy and paste job and thus not really traceable.

You could always "watch the topic", I believe you can configure it as to when it will send you email updates. As for notifications on the forum for quotes, I'm not sure if it's possible with an addon, but it'd be nice to have I guess.

That would require some pretty heavy modification from what I can see, as all the quote button does is generate some bbcode to control the look of your post. Probably won't happen unfortunately.

Yeah it's highly unlikely. The closest thing I can think of is setting "subscribe to topics that I post on" to on, and setting up an email filter to search the summary for quotes. Although that wouldn't work every time.

I'd definitely use it.

However, I don't think it's feasible. As far as my knowledge with these things goes (not so far :P), quoting is just a change of appearance as Yguy said. If I'm wrong, I'd love to see it happen, but I don't think I am :/.

That is true about the quoting thing on other post things - it probably happens pretty rarely unless you're really popular on these forums. My main thought though was that if there's a topic with 10 pages of posts and you posted on page 4, you could quickly see if anyone in those 6 pages responded to what you said.

I can tell you right away that as a conservative Christian on these boards, I start off debating with one person on a particular topic and find 4 or 5 people quoting me within an hour. If I had this feature enabled my inbox would be flooded pretty fast.

Well of course that could be the case for some people and they could choose to not be notified. Though it could all be put into one email that gets sent to you daily/weekly/monthly which wouldn't be as bad - I think there's currently an option to do it that way with people who have posted on any forums you have (I have it set up something like that).

Plus there could just be a 'view responses' button similar to the 'view my posts' button.

:o wow that's amazing. I guess I'm not the only one who thought of it then :). I can't wait till it's out and then I can tell everybody it was my idea (even though it really wasn't, of course, but it very well could have been.)

I look at topics I posted on and see if it's been quoted by habit, but I also like looking at what other people say, so I'm not really sure if I would use this or not.

Would there be an issue with people quoting other people's posts in their signature? I see this a lot and it seems like it might cause continual notifications on topics that have nothing to do with what you originally said.

No, it wouldn't cause any problems.
