On a base level, love is, if not the meaning of intelligent life, the means for the continuation of such. Beyond that, to be near someone you love, even if you're unsure of their feelings towards you, is the most wonderful feeling in the world. Love, even if it's one-sided, means baring your soul to someone. In my experience, if you don't end up in a relationship with someone you love and manage to move on without discussing it with them, you often end up as great friends.
