Mather, they have gunpowder siege weapons that would blow the crap out of us. Plus, they wouldn't charge the pikes and the pikes wouldn't catch up with them.

They didn't get gunpowder till almost the end of the middle ages. And if I recall, they never really used gunpowder for cannons etc.

Not cannons. Basically what they did was they used the old fashion kind of rocket barrages using pieces of wood and some gunpowder (not sure exactly how it works), which were used in China against them.

I still wonder... how would some trenches filled with crude oil work? Also how well would a preemptive strike (in the night with light(ish) infantry) work?

If they had guns this would probably happen

I also think something like this will happen

It's a REALLY big shaft.

I didn't catch fire, I used the can of hairspray as a flamethrower and pointed it at my arm.

how are you going to ignore my posts when I'm offering to let you live as my vassal in two weeks time?

Two questions. First, how come my treasury is 0. Second, what does my government type mean?

Cool movie Icu.

And I just forgot to put the 1. Your budget is 10 million. Your government basically means that instead of getting knights like the rest of the people, instead you have professional militia.

Anyways, a bolt through the chest of the siege engineers would render their cannons useless.

Rocco, wearing scale mail stops arrows, and they would have to breach a phalanx wall to get to the arbalestiers which their arrows can't hurt enough.

I'll try to explain it for you:

-Mongol raiding force-

-spiked mantlets-spiked mantlets-

-Scale Armoured Pikemen-

-Scale Armoured Arbalestiers-

Look, both sides shoot, mongols begin dying. Mongols charge, they impale themselves. Mongols retreat, they can't get far enough away before most are shoot down by arbalestiers.

How much would scale armoured pikemen and spiked steel mantlets cost?

Will you please answer, Retech. If you don't know; mantlets are part walls, part shields. It's an Incan defensive siege unit.

Pikemen = 500ish

Mantlets = 1000 (They're solid steel?)

Mongol Invasion of Everything - Prelude

The feared scourge had reached Europe; its famed armies have conquered great empires and defeated mighty armies. Now it has come to wage war on the rich heartlands of Europe. Having been delayed by a rebellious Persia, only three Mongolian hosts entered the western lands. Two composed of three thousand Mongolian horse archers and two thousand light lancers, as well as their famed "launcher of flaming tongues." A third composed of five thousand Mongolian horse archers, four thousand heavy lancers, two thousand dismounted lancers, and their various gunpowder weapons.

One of the lighter raiding parties found their way through the Turkish tribal area and struck Budapest, the Hungarian capital city. They caught the sieging Bulgarians off guard, and drove them away with only their fright. Meanwhile the Mongols spent their time ravaging Hungary.

The second lighter raiding party struck Kiev, chasing the Icelandic calvery with a thousand of their horse archers, dealing significant casualties. They reached the Burgundian traps and took moderate casualties, before retreating. The remainding band spent the rest of the time pillaging the outlying villages and making off with their things.

Casualties:

200 Icelandic thingymajigs

700 Mongol Horse Archers

Result: Technical victory

The heavier invasive army found the French position on a large hill in Kiev. The battle began with the French ballistas firing at the moving Mongolian horde, killing several soldiers on horseback. Then the Mongols suddenly turned inwards to the hill and fired a large volley of arrows from their powerful composite arrows, ignoring the pikemen and hitting the archers. The French archers fired back, dealing significant casualties. The Mongol General shouts some directions, and the Mongolian horse archers surround the hill, before forming dozens of cantabrian circles, where the Mongolian forces rode in circles and kept a continous stream of fire. The French archers had difficulty replying, because of the speed of the Mongol calvery. Due to the calmness of General Ritz, the French pikemen did not break.

Then the Mongolian forces suddenly dispersed and retreated back the way they came. The French pikemen, who had a poor view of the action, began celebrating that the Mongols has been so easily defeated. However, their partying was cut short when the Mongols began using their gunpowder artillery. Thousands of burning arrows flew every which way at the French position, causing a deafening sound. They did moderate damage, but the main effect was the disorientation of the enemy forces. Then the Mongols once again surrounded the camp with their horse archers and opened fire. In the confusion, General Ritz could not prevent the pikemen from breaking formation, so the pikemen surged forward at the Mongol horse archers. The general immediately ordered his 3500 spearmen to take the pikemen's place, but it was too late. The four thousand Mongolian lancers had ridden into camp under cover of smoke, and immediately set to ravaging the exposed French archers, before fleeing when the spearmen arrived. Meanwhile, the Mongolian horse archers easily picked off the straying pikemen. A final last barrage struck the General in the chest, causing him to drop to the ground. The French soldiers, believing their general to be dead, fled for their lives, though most were cut down by the Mongolian calvery. Only five hundred elite archers reached Kiev.

Casualties

Mongolian

4500 Mongolian Horse Archers

500 Heavy Lancers

French

Entire army except 500 elite archers

Result: Crushing Defeat

Also keep in mind that the Mongols learn over time, so mixing up tactics is a good idea.

You forgot something there Retech :S.

I said if they ever got near the hill to activate the traps I said, ah well.

The archers will carry Ritz back to the homeland and then document their tales so that future generation soldiers know how the Mongolians work.

Icu, I thought you said that was only if the Mongols ever "massed", but they were too spread out for the traps to do much.

Nex, I thought Dungeonal said you had some. Maybe I'm just misreading things. Mongols lost 700 horse archers.

Rocco, that was the first part of the first wave. People didn't really have their defence plans in yet, so I didn't want to wipe people off the map.
