Ye Olde Hegemony

The Mongols don't have gunpowder siege units. It's firing basically flaming arrows, which wouldn't do much damage to the walls of a city, but might spark fires within the city.

They're probably going for Hungary and Kiev.

Also, look what happened to me when you stay in a static position.

I'm sending out groups of around 150 myrmidons (my special unit) with orders to harass and generally cause confusion to the mongol hordes (say three groups doing hit and run attacks for a month.... it's gonna be rather painful)

My new unit is designed to be fairly static... But it's also designed in a way that it is nigh immune to arrows, and lances will be inneffective as well.

Ah what the hell, can't see any reason in it being secret. It's basically a soldier with a large shield, curved at the top, with a slit in the middle. A crossbow can lock into the slit and shoot through the shield. The shield also has spikes on it. Pretty big spikes.

The curve means that a lance will likely be deflected either upwards or downwards, either way is going to leave them exposed and moving towards the spikes at a fairly rapid pace.

The immunity to arrows comes from a Testudo formation.

There is one weakness, and that is that no matter what, one of the flanks will be exposed due to the nature of the formation, but that can be easily solved by having two formation side by side, and have the people in the exposed flanks armed with light crossbows and facing each other. This way, if they try to go for the exposed side, they'll be riding into a valley of death.

The people not using crossbows will be using naginatas, chosen for it's light weight, and good reach. It'll be arranged so that the first two rows of the formation are using naginatas, and the rest are using crossbows, pointing them at a 35+ degree angle and firing when directed.

I haven't really received any new defence updates, unless everyone wants to keep their defences the same. Keep in mind I don't read the thread when I do the battle reports, so I might miss something important.

And t hen the Mongols fire the siege weapons, and use large rocks instead of arrows, and your warriors are crushed.

Nothing is impenetrable, and the Mongols will just find a way as you stay in formation.

It's a REALLY big shaft.

I didn't catch fire, I used the can of hairspray as a flamethrower and pointed it at my arm.

how are you going to ignore my posts when I'm offering to let you live as my vassal in two weeks time?

Please tell me how you plan to beat them then?

Their main offensive weapon is arrows. I found a way to defend against arrows effectively.

And you can't fire large rocks with a bow. Seige weapons are a legitimate threat, yes, which is why I plan to take them out with all haste.

You do realize that it would possibly be effective to beat them up a bit before they attack? (using ambushes with a [cabbage] tonne of elite skimirshers as well as hit and run attacks at night)

So once the enemy closes the gap your troops are largely useless since they'll have to discard that gigantic unwieldy shield.

And these troops are sent to Kiev to be put under King Dungeonal's command:

2500 Kievian MAA

6000 Leon crossbows

500 Welsh cavalry

Can't send any more until the next half decade.

My tactic is to push them into Scandinavia, they wont really be used to the temperature and then I will use Scandinavian troops which I will train who will expertise in the harsh enviroment. I will then use hills to make my troops defend a high point, and then a forest nearby to hide a large force, as the Mongols come near they will do what they did last time, where they will retreat to use their artillery, as they retreat, they will be ambushed by my forces, and this will cause dismay in their ranks, that is when I will use some of my forces on the hill to flank the chaos which is below, and hopefully, they will be defeated.

It's a REALLY big shaft.

Icu, how are you going to push them into scandinavia? That would involve pushing them several dozen miles, at the very least. They aren't going to follow you, and since they move faster, they'll just escape. They aren't going to fight on anything but plains in all likelihood.

Retech, I pmed you my battle plan.

Well then everyone who isn't in Scandinavia is screwed then, they will have to fight there eventually.

But my plan also works with any place really.

It's a REALLY big shaft.

I'm defending you in Kiev I think, albeit not actually joining forces with your army.

I figure that if we act individually the mongols will be forced to split into seperate groups, making the load easier on each individual army, since keeping tabs on an army in a battle involving several dozen thousand troops is a nightmare.

why are we acting individually :(

thanks Dusty :D

I'm helping you in that there will be less mongols fighting you than those that were sent in your direction.

Three groups? For a month? I have 34 groups of 200 Hlaupari patrolling Kiev and attacking targets of opportunity with hit and run attacks until the Mongols are defeated.

Pretty good mobile fortress, Ross. I'll have my Hlaupari lead the Mongols towards one of those formations, test it out.

My patrols theoretically will be able to take out some of their gunpowder weaponry, that should help.
