Seraphi
Tactical defeat, but strategic victory, I'd say. Need to remember to do better recon next time, if I'd remembered to check where the seige weaponry was placed, I might just have won that. Maybe. Thanks for the battle report Retech, It's good. The Terrapins have proven their effectiveness against Cavalry, and will be put to very good use in the future, although I doubt the oil tactic will work again, so I'll need to come up with a new way to defend the flanks. Retech
And where were any of my 6,800 Hlaupari during this, hm? I didn't have any numbers for them on my PM, so I basically forgot about it. ---- Thanks. The problem is that the Mongols are mobile, so you can't really expect their siege weapons to stay stationary long, unless it was a siege. Even then, it still might move around. Icuownage
Nice tactic Ross, but scythes would suck against lances. Looks like the terrapins are pretty effective. It's a REALLY big shaft.I didn't catch fire, I used the can of hairspray as a flamethrower and pointed it at my arm.how are you going to ignore my posts when I'm offering to let you live as my vassal in two weeks time? Seraphi
True, true... Perhaps I could use massive kites with people strapped to them for Recon? I recall that tactic being used at one point or another. Would allow for a clear view of pretty much everything nearby, although it would also allow the enemy to see your location fairly plainly as well. What do you think, Retech? Retech
They were actually Naginata, but I forgot the name of it in the middle, and I couldn't describe it. Master of your domain? Seraphi
Aaah, was kind of wondering, thought you might have been trying to keep it a secret or something  I actually think this is a really fun game. Nero
In reality though they'd be largely useless since the Mongol lancers would just dismount and charge on foot. Vienna Raszyn Warsaw Klushino

Retech
Errrr, kite reconissance? I'm not sure it would work. How big would a kite have to be to carry someone? Seraphi
I fail to see how that would help though. The shields are curved, so that charging with a lance will just make you stumble and trip as the lance deflects upwards or down. That would then leave you exposed to the Naginatas, and they wouldn't even have to come out from behind the shield, since the naginata has such good reach. No idea Retech, but have you ever seen one of those pictures of ninjas strapped to a kite? I was thinking that sort of thing. No idea how it works in reality, but it might be plausible. Let me go check. EDIT: Wikipedia mentions something about it, however breiefly. "Kites have been used for military uses in the past for signaling, for delivery of munitions, and for observation, by lifting an observer above the field of battle, and by using kite aerial photography." Icuownage
They're basically the same length as their lances, but you have the defensive bonus, giving you the advantage against the chargers. Also I'd like to point out that a curved shield, well what I am imagining here, kind of like this http://www.a2armory.com/images/med-shields/wooden-shield.jpg Would probably suck in direct confrontation, so you should include some swordsmen in your ranks incase of a direct confrontation. Seraphi
A lot bigger. It's sort of a tower shield, and the curves are at the top and bottom. It's kind of unwieldly, but the only thing it's used for is the Testudo formation and it fills that role perfectly.
Retech
Okay Ross, I'll allow it, because I trust Wikipedia completely. Note that there's a decent chance that it won't work though, but you could always try to make it benefit you. There should be a back-up plan just incase though. Master of your domain? So, if they simply dismounted and came at the formation like infantry, your troops would be forced to drop the shields since they're so ungainly in close combat.
