Music in games - important?

Well, i've played today on my PS2 (like almost every day), and i grabbed one of my old PS-One games back (Gran turismo) and i started playing it. I was suprised of the graphix (they were ugly but meh  ), but the music was GREAT. I mean, i spended almost an hour just listening to music of bands i've never heard of. And when i play other games, for example FIFA, the music always sucks.

Why i tell you all this?

I have 2 conclusions, first of all i find that the music in some games is getting worser and worser, and secondly, i find music VERY important in games because it can make/ruin a game.

(PS i like the rs music  )

One of my greatest memories from Halo was definitely the music. If it wasn't for the music I'd say Halo was a top of the range shooter; with the music - it's the best game ever! Such a talented composer shouldn't be stuck in some sweaty room making computer games (and raking in the cash).

Runescape music sucks, i use low detail. Although it's top of the standard for free mmorpgs. Fair play to Jagex.

I think good music in games can improve it lots (in the areas Bubsa just mentioned), however I don't think having "bad" music or no music at all would/can ruin it. Make it less exciting perhaps, but not ruin it? I dunno.

As far as I'm concerned, music is definitely not getting worse. Quite the contrary, I think developers are now starting to realise how big a role music can actually play in a game, so they put more effort into making it good (i.e professional orchestras)

Also, one word: Morrowind. I just love the music in that game. Shame there aren't many tracks. In the collector's edition of said game, you actually get a cd with the Morrowind music. :)

It's just like movies. An excellent soundtrack can make or break a movie, and the effect of any scene depends absolutely on the music. I'm sure its the same for computer games.

Although with computer games, no music at all can also work, especially instead of some awful music that totally ruins the game.

video game music? Hell, first one that comes to mind is Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, awesome soundtracks.

What takes the cake? Final Fantasy Tactics by a landslide, HANDS DOWN best video game music ever.

Metal fans, check out my band!

Well, it's hard to beat Final Fantasy when it comes to quality music, but I think the way the music is used is important as well. For example, in Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, as you confront more monsters you'll begin to lose your sanity, which can cause many strange things to happen ranging from a tilted camera angle to faked hardware malfunctions. The background music plays along with this in a very subtle way, but it really enhances the atmosphere.

Well, it mad improves on games. Both GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas were made HIGHLY memorable, a lot of which can be attributed to their killed soundtracks. If I hear any songs from any of those games, I know it right away and am excited.

Other games...Especially Warcraft III: Frozen Throne, this is better than most movie soundtracks...

Plus any Star Wars game, whether they use the Star Wars theme, or just work off of it (KOTR worked off the main ideas, and made for an amazing soundtrack) is bound to have good music.

Many other games it just works as something to keep from it being completely silent. You rarely (if ever) have one that ruins a game.

ahhhh! eternal darkness: sanity's requiem! the other day i couldnt think of the name for that game no matter what i did, i even started looking through a list of all the game cube games on gamefaqs. i got bored after "c" though, never got to "e" . i liked that game a ton, the music in it was pretty freaky, that whole game freaked me out. actually the freakiest thing was turning off all the lights at 9:00 at night, with it pouring down rain and tons of lightning and thunder, sitting in my attic in witch the roof is the walls, so i get that scary rainy feeling in there. then i turn of afi - sing the sorrow album and listen to it very loudly, i dont know why but all that together freaked me out.

no music in a game would absolutely kill it..

the only games that can get away with it are classic arcade games ^_^

but they have constant sound, so it works out

but without music I would get bored out of my mind because silence is freakishly boring

Music in games creates the right atmosphere. I don't think that music in games is getting worse. People are just starting to realize that the music is important. A few newer games like Shadow of the Colossus and Geist have mind blowing music that creates just the right kind of atmosphere. The game, Baten Katos has pretty good music, but HORRIBLE voice acting. When I think of the game, I think of the bad voice acting.

Music, voice acting, sound effects, they all have an important impact on what someone thinks of the game mainly because music is catchy and sounds are memorable.

I remember before playing halo 2 at parties, or online, id put in halo 1, and go and beat the last lve, at the part where you drive through the ship. All phsyced me up. Was mostly the music that idd it though.
