Nexaduro
Ok, I might need some help. So far my fortress has 3 levels. 1st level: WoodStockpilelXXXXXXlCrpntr----lXXXXXXlW.S.-StairslXXXXXXl_____---____________Trd____________Dp____________---____________---____________---_________Entrance ______Refuse Stockpile_________Outside 2nd level: Ok, too complicated. Hall going down to 19 5x5 farm plots connected to a regularly refilling series of ponds. 4 stills on one side of the main hallway, large food stockpile on the other side. 3rd level: Mason's workshop and stone stockpile on the west side of the stairs, furniture stockpile south of the stairs, and bare-bones dormitory to the east. That's it so far. No majour problems as of yet. But I want to know, what should I do next? 10:53 PM - retech9691: I feel the need10:53 PM - retech9691: To include many chasms in my story arc10:53 PM - Resistance: You mean plotholes? Retech
No need for so many farm plots. One square per dwarf is enough, if you have other food sources. Start making lots of barrels and make your own alcohol. Master of your domain? I am Lord of the manor, Queen of the castle, King of the county! Nexaduro
Rocco, I'm trying to start an early military and I have plenty of wardogs. Once I get everything I need, I'll carve out a new, more symmetrical and practical fort closer to the volcano. 10:53 PM - retech9691: I feel the need10:53 PM - retech9691: To include many chasms in my story arc10:53 PM - Resistance: You mean plotholes? Seraphi
Also, Dwarf Therapist is the most helpful thing ever. Runesmith makes checking your dwarves' happiness a lot easier, too. I only use those two addons.

Jehosaphat
I have one of almost every workshop - and multiples of some - and yet, I'm just too lazy to get my dwarves their own rooms. I'm hoping to get a noble soon. Just so I can drown him.
Seraphi
Phew, I figured out why my militia was just sitting around doing nothing. the alert and schedule system is a bit of a mess, but it really is flexible once you get to understand it.

Seraphi
I was just about ready to get my secret police to kill one of my 4 soapmakers (SO USEFUL.) to fulfill a crafters request for body parts, when one of the dogs died and the crafter went straight for its skull instead, and then started work on his artifact. I'm glad I don't have to kill one of my dwarves, but at the same time curious; Why is it always body parts?
Earth
because body parts can be made into tokens. if you needed the parts that badly, why didnt you look for a wild animal to kill? Jehosaphat
Same thing sorta happened to me, Ross, except I had my army go slaughter a cougar that was walking around too close to my fort. I then had to build a butcher's shop right next to the damn corpse because my butcher was saying it was too far away. How do I get my dwarves to move stuff like corpses without having a stockpile of the stuff?
Seraphi
Designate it for dumping maybe? My secret police squad is finished now. That makes two sqauds. And my entrance hall is absolutely loaded with traps, including a lever activated lockdown flood chamber. BRING ON THE SEIGES.
Earth
simple..i think its a graveyard? oh and all i have are three cage traps, and a pack of murderous war dogs. i dont even have enough weapons for my guys. they're going around with wooden weapons.. Jehosaphat
Hmm. Soon, I will begin construction on a flooding chamber for invasions and nobles; activatable by either pressure pad or by lever. Oh, and remember the thing I had to slaughter a cougar for earlier? Well, the guy ended up making a stupid toy boat. So now, I've got a legendary bracelet, toy boat, and cabinet. What next, legendary wooden crossbow bolts?
Seraphi
Ah yeah, build a burial receptacle with a casket or coffin, designate a room as a tomb, then set a dwarf to do the burial labour, and he should do it for you. Earth, wooden weapons are really good for training with. I have a stock of iron weapons, but I use wooden weapons while my squads are training. Seraphi
Yeah, the military system is really flexible, but also nigh impenetrable. once you get into it though, it's really good, and you can set complicated commands without needing to input anything after the initial settings.
