nope. not ding videos of dwarf fortress ATM. but a skype friend advised me to play the game, so off to the endless mining and dieing of dwarf fortress!

Yeah, I'm making my new fortress as efficient as reasonably possible.

okay, i had to reset my fortress from the last save.. if you could name save files, it would be esier for me to find..

My fortress isn't too bad, all the original dwarves 1st wave migrants have pretty much all died off except for the farmer/brewer and mason, and they all started going insane and dying just as the 2nd wave of migrants arrived so those stayed relatively "uninfected." Things are fairly stable, I have enough food and drink, and I have a considerably good military from the fact that almost every migrant seems to have combat training. My next enterprise is mining lignite and gems from the ocean wall on the opposite corner of the map through a separate digsite. Shouldn't be too hard.

well, when you acidentaly flood your entire space with the ocean, dont come whinign to me.

I have made a terrible mistake. I assumed sand could count as sandstone, and thus provide me with fuel from sediment layers, but... It can't, and now I cannot get my metalworking industry going.

PS. Retech, perhaps you should keep track of your dwarf's genders, and name them Appropriatly...

heh. well, my farms are all up, ive got a friggen waterwheel right next to the giant river fish are being gotten from, and yet istill have to find a way to make it connect to a mill..

Just downloaded the game, but I haven't installed it yet. I have a few questions first.

 

1. How do I download a texture pack, and what is the best one?

2. Where do I get this Newb Pack helper?

3. Are there any tutorials or guides for this game?

There's a lack of females in the tavern to even finish naming the first wave. I have to assign some males to female dwarves. Btw, you have decided to forego any formal wedding celebrations.

So two of my dwarves died to thirst (my idiot brewer decided to take a 2 season break), and now I ahve one dead mienr and one melancholy miner. This can't end well...

make a new fort then... now, how does a water wheel work? ive set one up in my fast flowing river... and i need to connecdt it to something.

Horizontal and vertical axels. Then if you want to change direction, use a gear box.

Ross, you of all people should know you can only use coal, lignite and wood for fuel! My last several fortresses are on clay and sand, that's why I have to make another mine shaft.

Heh, similar problem here a while ago. Issues with the farmer/brewer and my irrigation system, followed by 4 deaths and the start of a tantrum spiral. Just before the last immigration wave everything was calming down, then one miner went mad and the other melancholy. Which restarted the spiral among the first generation dwarves who were just starting to recover.

 

Thank Armok for my luck with immigration waves, I get new dwarves with the needed skills just in time to fill newly vacant positions. Not to mention, the old don't commingle with the new so the immigrants stay happy.

 

Lowest happiness is 0, highest is 402! :thumbsup:

 

 

 

Also, a question: Why shouldn't I simply build a massive wall around the gamemap to prevent incursions by enemies? I can have an intricate system of trapped gates to allow friendly access to the fortress while keeping out enemies! Is that actually a possible concept?

If a dwarf goes into a fey mood and makes an item, I think their happiness goes up by a thousand.

Through a process of trial and error I have worked out how to play the game.

Now to try playing it properly.

Here's a picture of my completed and filled cistern. Incase I run out of beers, my dwarves will have fresh, desalinated water. The channels being built will connect directly with the ocean and will then be pumped up to the storage at ground level, to fill a floodtrap.
