Nex, I know that only those can be used as fuel, but those materials only come from sediment layers, and I did not have a sediment layer, since sand doesn't count as a sediment layer.

Right you are, but I haven't had a strange mood until now. My miner got possessed and made an unadorned magnetite artifact table.

Three whales washed up on the beach of my new fortress... Suffice to say, my butchers shop is at maximum clutter level.

 

New fortress is in a heavily forested, warm, peaceful climate.

 

Also, it's full of all the metals, flux stone and gems I'll ever need.

 

Also, theres a brook.

 

Also, magma.

Anyways, what weapons do you recommend for the purpose of outfitting my military, Ross? The Sheriff, at least, will be armed with a hammer.

 

Also, I have access to iron and steel but no other weapon metal is available. I have lots of wood for fuel, and some coke as well. Should I use iron first or skip straight to steel?

 

Also, for a drowning hall, I need to put pressure pads through the entire thing right?

Skip straight to steel. Make sure you mix crossbows and melee weapons.

 

I typically use maces, but use whichever one you want.

so, i need horizontal and vertical axils only? like say i put the wheel in the middle of the river, and i need two axles to connect it to the shore, do i need a third vertical axil to make it work?..

The axels are the things that transfer power. The turning wheel provides power, which cannot be used for anything else unless you have axels. What are you trying to power?

a mill. i need the power so i can make bread.. but the wheel wont turn, even tho its in the middle of an effing river.

Farming is much more reliable. Might be hard to continue the fortress without it (lack of alcohol and all of that)

But yeah, farming is anything but reliable...takes ages to set up, once it starts we are out of food and the food it produces runs out before I could use it.

A single high level farmer can sustain a mid-sized fortress by him(her)self. Something that could help would be to make sure that farming is the only labor that the farmer has.

Anyway, I am gonna see what fishing does this time...

 

And yeah, more than one farmer does nothing.

Personally I would use pressure pads to activate doors, then use a manual lever to release the flood. Seems much safer than having one goblin rush in, activate the flood, and have the others wait it out.

I have no idea. It should turn anytime there is flow. Then again, my water wheel doesn't work either. You could have someone manually do it, if that's an option.

If you have it on a natural river then you need to build a channel comming off of it and the water wheel over that.(It doesn't work on naturals for some reason)

 

You need to build the axle first though, otherwise it will just collapse.

Is this a brook or a river? If it's a brook, you'll need to channel on the river, because it has a natural grate at the top.

huh? my guys built the wheel without any support in the center of the river... still worked fine. meh. ill look it up on thw wiki.

EDIT: ahh... i have a brook, so the thing has a floor on it. i need to build it after i chanal it../

Maybe you need to have it facing the direction that the river is flowing in?
