Bringing up the other idea, we all take a captain test. If SI doesn't mind anyway. Basically a few scenarios from the simulator that puts us all into situations that show our strong and weak points.

Nex, if you were in charge you'd be spending too much time focusing on getting us a stronghold on a planet which would only result in Dusty bombarding us.

You are aware that I am a decent tactician, right? My techs may fail, but they do so in the simulator, so they don't pose any danger. I may die a lot, but I do so merely because the usual ways to do things are unavailable to me. I am less dangerous than both Earth and Nex, which leaves only me, Icu, Monty and Lee as organic members of the ship. Lee is too scared and careless to be a viable captain. Drake is "new" and doesn't want the title and Icu seems unwilling to get the title by any biased means. Which leaves it down to me and Icu, I would prefer him to be in charge actually, even though I could use the title. Yeah, and Retech has better thing to do, seeing how he wants to be a research AI.

 

Lee, nanites could be programmed to make a "liquid" one, like human-shape replicators from Stargate. Well, they should be able to do that, at least if you research nanite bonding.

And I think the captain title would actually reduce my deathrate, since at least half my deaths are because I have to do workarounds.

I shot that guy with a tranquiliser WHO THEN FELL ON THE ALARM.

 

My support tele'd in (I can't remember who they were) and when they shot their gun, the shell exploded in the barrel, causing an eplosion that removed all our firepower.

 

The only reason we made it out was cause I went for the [bleep] it all option and blew the hell outta the ship and escaped before support came in.

And still the two of us are the best options, because bad luck and poor execution is much better than no planning, bad planning and breaking plans.
