Returning to slayer, what should I get?

I took a break once getting 99 to get levels for effigies but that's boring as hell so I'm going back to slaying :thumbsup:

There's Soul Wars and Ardy capes now, and both can, in theory, be easier to achieve, and at least challenge the firecape in terms of effectiveness.

That's not really true. In most cases if you're going for pure slaying speed, prayer bonus is only really needed to prolong your time at a task while using prayer potions so that you don't need to bank again. If you can complete a task without the extra prayer bonus, then a cape like SW isn't necessary and the str bonus from the fire cape is a pretty good bonus.

 

OT, the other things you need are turmoil and a chaotic rapier, but I'd just wait for Quyneax to post her universal slayer equipment response.

Maximizing str bonus is the point of high tier slayer gear, and the fire cape gives the best str bonus for its slot and a little prayer. It also helps for ice strykewyrms if you don't want to spend 2k points.

 

EDIT: Get piety and barrows gloves before anything else, those are probably the best upgrades you can make to your current setup atm.

I don't have piety (or turmoil) which those soul wars cape are for so they'd be useless for me unless I'm on a task where I need to protect pray.

 

Turmoil is not looking realistic at the moment. Should I aim for Soul Split at least?

You might want to do a few other quests besides king's ransom (for piety) for 176 quest points for barrows gloves.

Slayer setups generally emphasise strength bonus, which increases the average damage of each succesful hit (slayer monsters usually having rather low defence, hitting is not a problem). Secondly, prayer bonus is important to keep the cost of prayer potions down (as you slay with piety on, to increase the speed of your kills. This is cost-effective and highly recommended). As a rule of thumb, +15 prayer bonus or above is good, but don't overdo it (anything above +25 is a waste). Defence and accuracy bonus are usually not fretted over (any defence bonus over 200 will do; if you get hit too often you should be using a protection prayer). Dagganoth, black demon, lesser demon, hellhound, bloodveld and spectre tasks should be cannoned, as it dramatically increases xp rates (although it costs a bit).

 

Some notes on gear: You'll want a fury and a berserker ring before you get bandos plate, and get that before tassets. You'll want accuracy bonus on higher-levelled dragons; if using stab attacks (which you should) you can use the Ardougne cloak 3 which provides you with +6 stab and +6 prayer bonus. Torso + sw cape and fire cape + proselyte are common cheap top/cape combinations; the former is better.

 

Some levels to get for slayer (in approximate order but I'm not sure on the summoning):

• 68 summoning - bunyip
  
• 81 dungeoneering (you need 2 million xp, which takes you to level 80, but allowing some tokens for the scroll of life) - rapier
  
• 89 herblore (85 with a +4 stew boost) - extreme potions, superantifires
  
• 95 prayer - turmoil and soul split
  
• 88 summoning - unicorn
  
• 96 herblore (91 with a +5 stew boost) - overload
  
• 99 summoning - steel titan
