Over 18,000 Accounts Cancelled in World of Warcraft

No cheaters allowed!

Blizzard announced on their website yesterday evening that over 18,000 World of Warcraft accounts have been permanently banned in the last three months for engaging in activities that violate the Terms of Use agreement:

A majority of these accounts were found to be using third-party programs to farm gold and items. Such actions can severely impact the economy of a realm and the overall game enjoyment for all players.

We will continue to actively monitor all World of Warcraft realms in order to protect the service and its players from the negative effects of cheating. Please note that selling World of Warcraft content, such as gold, items, and characters, can result in the permanent removal of the involved accounts from World of Warcraft.

Running third-party programs to farm gold, most gamers would agree, is cheating. But many game companies have slowly started to allow customer to trade, buy, and sell gold and items - officially, for example through Sony's Station Exchange. Blizzard, however, has a very strict policy against the practice. Some of the rarer and most coveted items will actually bind to the player who picks it up, making it impossible to sell or trade.

Blizzard noted that reports from gamers alerted the company to instances of "cheating" that resulted the bans.

Nice to know Runescape isn't the only one with autoer problems.

I wonder how many total accounts they have if they banned 18k.

18k players * $15.00 per month = $270k per month = $3.24 mil per year.

Meh, Blizzard can afford to spend as much as it wants anyway!

Their games are always awesome so alot of people buy.

4 million (people) * $15.00 * 12 (months) = $720 000 000 :o

18 thousand (people) * $15.00 * 12 (months) = $3 240 000

$720 000 000

-$3 240 000

=$716 760 000 they will still have. Thats just a estimate if everybody paid for a year and 4 million people played.

I was always surprised how many cheaters who were banned started a new account and started paying straight away again.

I think in an MMORPG, that community ties are so strong, that when a serious player is banned, he doesn't know what to do with himself, so just starts from scratch again. Of course in Runescape, it's a lot easier to get levels and gold when you're a member than when you're not - so the cheaters sign up again.

On another subject, I'd far rather that games let you trade ingame items for real life money. Sure, some items should be just available through ingame prowess ('bound' items) - but I think that integrating ingame and real-life economies is a very interesting thing to do.

Interesting, but for the people willing to waste money =\

Maybe if there was a $20-50 cap per month it'd make a little more sense, but even then that would probably be a huge advantage unless Sword of Generic Slaying +1 is $20 alone :P

But, some people have more money than time. They could be earning $100 per hour or something rather than spending an hour getting $5 worth of rs gold.

Darn CHEETS

Coming from someone who openly admitted to AFK training ...

And keep in mind that although Jagex loses that money, they still get the cash from sales.

18k * $40 = 620k. Granted, it's not as much, but it's something. And the application of strict policies such as this has the potential to encourage and entice more gamers to join.

I wouldn't be surprised if, eventually, it will be possible for companies to take legal action against cheaters in online games. I mean, it breeches the agreements, and the RIAA sues about 700 people every month (not that that justifies it of course because the RIAA are a bunch of morons, but you get my point). But anyway, good on Blizzard.

They have, what...5 million customer's now? Me being one of them, lol....18k people is nothing. At all. They regularily give out like 20 or 30 grand in graphics cards and other hardware...Like every month or two...Like this month...31 select people (1 per day) get some expensive thinger, I forgot what it was exactly...Gfx card...something.

What they need to do is ban the chinese accounts (all farmers) that come on the American servers (illegally by law, may I add) and spam accounts, account's mail systems, and general chats with websites, items, etc etc. It's not as bad as I remember RuneScape being though, so that's a plus.
