Scamming!

Hi all,

Although I've roamed the site quite a bit before, this is the first time making an account and writting on the forums here.

I'm completely fed up with scammers, taking the hard earned gold of honest RS players by different tricks and such.

I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with the "celeb cake" scam, which i encountered today.

The scam is pretty much somebody messaging you, asking if you have a celebration cake, and saying they'll pay millions for it.

Then either one of their buddies helping them scam you, or themselves on a different account come near you (this usually happens in the grand exchange, by the way)

saying they're selling a celebration cake for cheap. And of course, you're completely clueless and give them a lot less than the first player asked to buy it for,

making you lose all your money/items and gaining nothing.

I was ready to buy some monkfish for training my attack (I'm currently at 68, I wanted to get to 70 for the whip) in the GE, and this scam happened.

I was greedy and foolish enough to give 30 mil away for a cake that somebody would've "bought" for 100mil.

I now have nothing, not even armour or weapons and am now kicking unicorns trying to get their horns.

You can just imagine how dumb i feel right now. #-o

Anyways, this is just a warning to the innocent players that think they're getting profit.

Some things are too good to be true, especially someone trying to buy a cake for 100 mil :(

I'd always be wary if somebody pm'ed me specifically asking to buy/sell something that I was not advertising :(

Sorry to hear that bro - hope you can find a way to get back that money :/

yeah, me too. the money i worked for over a month was gone in less than 5 minutes. All because of people that can't play the game right :(

Yeah, it sucks when it happens. But lesson learned: You just need to take a step back from the situation and say "Is this suspicious? Too good to be true?" Because chances are, it is.

Maybe it's just because I'm an extremely skeptical person. But, i've only been scammed once in my five years due to following this rule. And that was because i didn't check the trade screen and payed big bone prices for normal bones.

i had one who was selling full dragon armour for 10 mill i went to go buy it then he declined quick and then we try to trade again and i noticed that he put a red dragonhide set instead. they are out there more you have to be carefull.

another one they like to do is the coal ore noted then when you go to put your money in they switch it to iron ore noted.<----- i found that out the hard way.

but i did have one scammer who messed up and i got the better end of the deal. he put robin and ranger boots in trade for my d med that was 1.2 mill at the time years ago and tryed to pull robin out but cancelled and then did the trade again but fast and he thought he pulled robin out but i got both robin and ranger boots from the trade. he went to tell the mod that i scammed him. the mod asked him what happend and he said that he was trying to scam people but then he got scammed by me. mod says thats what you get for trying to scam people and now you know how it feels to do that to others.

im honest i play by the rules. i help people if i can mostly through my skills i dont beg for money or items. only thing i say when people beg me for money or for items is to work for it. all my skills i earned by hard work. i have a friend on f2p who trades me supplys for arrows i dont charge him to make them for him. the way i look at it free exp.

I had a wannabe scammer go after me a few years ago. I was starting up ranged, so I thought I'd buy myself a cannon and powerslay. Sure enough, I get to the ge and have one guy pm'ing me, offering me a dwarf cannon and 5000cannonballs for 1500k. Sure enough, I go to do the deal, and he stupidly replaces the 5k cannonballs with 5k steel bars. I accept, he then pm's me saying 'noob, I totally scammed you, those bronze bars are worthless'. I then reply entirely confused, he checks his inv, and sure enough, an hour later I get a pm from a silvercrown asking me what happened. I tell him the story, and he starts laughing. Kinda sad really, I guess that one scammer hadn't practiced enough...

5,000 steel bars: 3.94 mil on the grand exchange.

20,000 cannonballs: 6.4 mil on the grand exchange, plus 128,000 smithing exp.

The look on that [wagon]es face when the bronze bars are still in his inventory: Priceless.

I don't know... these scams always seemed like "easily avoidable" to me. The only time I've been scammed, so to say, was when a "friend" betrayed me for 100k. Yeah, that's right, a mere 100k. Not more because I'm naturally distrustful of people so I never give out anything to anyone unless I can get over the loss quick. This is what happened. I've also almost fallen to the "free fish, show inv" scam the first time it happened, but luckily I was attentive enough still to notice the trick (I recall being rather sleepy at that time).

Lol...here was the weird part about that scam:

Price of an average dwarf cannon set: 800k

Price of 5k bronze bars (at the time): 680k

Total cost of it all: 1480k

Total I would've lost if he had scammed me: 20k

Pathetic eh?

luckily for me I got all my items back, plus an additional 2m from planking. I sure learned my lesson though, cakes can lead to loss of items, haha.

and foursideking, in my opinion that 20k "loss" is more of a pain in the butt if you ask me.

I'd rather just get the d cannon set instead of something else that I'd have to find a buyer for, even if the loss is as small as 20k.

Too good to be true? It probably is.

+1 One of the good things about RS is that you usually must interact with other people, just like in the real world. Scams like these should make people more aware the next time they encounter a similar situation.

Be glad you weren't "scammed" into a variable rate mortgage or the like.

They aren't, I had to look this up myself. The cakes that were dropped by guards and other NPCs are not tradeable.

Diango, however, now sells identical celebration cakes that simply have a different color icing, that can be bought with candles, light with a tinderbox, and eaten to restore 5hp. These are the cakes the OP is referring to, they are tradeable.

A fool and his money are soon depareted, a word of advice dont buy what you dont know the value of. This scam is the oldest one in the books, back when someone in the bank would be selling Spinach roll for 500k and someone on the otherside of the bank buying spinach rolls for 2m, and all the noobs scrambled to buy one to make a quick profit ended up getting scammed hard.

Also, the cake is a lie

I remember this, except usually when I saw it they were buying burnt bones, saying they were "rare."

Seriously though, if something seems off or suspicious, best to back off and think about it before any action is taken.

I've only ever been scammed once. I had been playing for about a year and chopped willows for a week to save up for a rune scim. I bought a rune scim from a guy, and then i looked in my inventory and saw a iron one. I was pissed, but after a while, I realized it wasn't that bad.

On another note, a few days ago someone was standing in Rogue's Den begging for more than 5 hours asking for 100k and said he lost his bank of 50m. I'm pretty sure he could have made way more than 100k doing something productive, and also trained some of his skills, enabling him to make more money in the long run. So when things don't go your way, remember that bad things happen to everyone, and being upset won't help. However, learning from the experience and looking to prevent it from happening in the future will help.

I've been scammed a while ago in a similar fashion to the OP's. Someone messaged me asking to buy a mithril seed for something like 10m. I didn't have one, but someone nearby was coincidentally trying to pawn one off, how convenient! He only asked for all of my items I was wearing, what a 'steal'! The person who messaged me said he'd come to my world, so he logged out, and I waited. Really, I didn't expect someone on a completely different server to be in cahoots with someone on mine, but I began getting suspicious around the 30 minute mark...

I would feel sorry for you, but Live and Learn by Crush 40 (Sonic Adventure 2 theme song) just came up on Pandora, therefore I can feel no pity or remorse for anyone but Eggman while I kick his ass.

Try again later.

Most people I know have been the victim of one scam and have then learnt their lesson. For those that don't learn there is an English saying.....

"Fool me once, shame on you,

Fool me twice, shame on me"

Says it all really, accept it happened and move on, but don't let it happen again.

Anyone remember the orange for a whip scam? Someone would be selling an orange for like 500k on one side of a bank, and on the opposite someone would be trading a whip for an orange. I was young, but I was never stupid enough to trade him (mainly because I didn't have 500k lol).

Finally on here to update that I have officially quit! It's been fun.
