You know I'm quite surprised there isn't a Simpsons thread here on TIF, even though it is losing a bit of popularity now.

 

I'll get right to it.

 

The last episode of the current series saw Ned Flanders and Edna Krabappel start dating. The episode ended with Ned finding out about Edna's past relationships and being freaked out by them, not sure whether to stay with her or run.

 

They are leaving the decision up to the puclic, letting people vote Pro or No to Nedna.

I'm all for them being in a relationship. The characters are so different from each other I think it would make for some very funny material.

I voted no already. Even after one episode it got annoying.

Both my girlfriend and I voted yes. It's a classic odd couple pairing that promises to be hilarious.

I think it's lazy of the brilliant writers of the simpsons to rely on a fan response like this.

Right, that's why it's continued successfully into the 23rd season. I see the logic.

It's not logic, it's opinion. If by 'successfully' you mean that it appears nation-wide in the same time slot every week then yes, it is successful. I tend to deem television shows successful when they are humorous, original, and, most importantly, relevant. The Simpsons is none of those despite the fact that it used to be all of them at one point.

Pretty much sums up my opinion on the show as well. I wish shows like these would just end on a good note instead of dragging out crappy story lines. The Edna and Flanders fiasco paints the perfect picture of what The Simpsons has degraded into.

Im stuck in the UK with only channel 4 to watch 'The Simpsons' on as I have no sky subscription and so I get to watch re-runs from the 3rd-8th season and the material in that is pretty brilliant and even on 4th or 5th watchings of the episodes I still LOL.

I was cool with it until the ~325th episode

I've watched a lot of the newer episodes recently and to be honest, to me personally I think they are as good as they ever were. I think the main problem is that people have grown up. With most programs, they will start and finish while you are still in the same age range, but the Simpsons has lasted so long. I must have seen my first episode around the age of 5. I'm now 20 and have much different tastes. Those old episodes we saw at that age will still feel better due to nostalgia but the core of the program remains the same from what I can see. I'm not sure if there was a lul due to me now only watching backwards from the most recent and having missed many seasons, but they seem good.

 

To me personally, I always watched them on BBC2 at 6pm. Once it moved to channel 4 and you had to sit through adverts, I stopped watching it.

Classic Simpsons is the best. That period from the 90's is def the best. I think they start to drop off a bit in the quality of the humor by 2000 ish. I still love the classic episodes, god they have some great.

Has anybody else noticed how 'risqué' the simpsons has become in the last few seasons?

 

I've seen quite a few episodes including heavy drug references, but recently they've become a lot more direct.

 

But also, having just watched the 500th Episode, I'm wondering if the makers are just seeing what they can put in before people complain. At one point in this episode, homer called a crowd of Springfield residents '"Jerks". Mayor Quimby replied "maybe we are all jerk", to which Chief Wiggum approached with a can labelled 'jerk off' saying "want me to spray you with some jerk off?"

 

It seems like something that can't have been added by accident.

 

Also, I liked how they know there are a lot of people who claim to really hate the new episodes as at the end of the 500th, a screen showed something along the lines of "thanks for watching the 500th episode, now go outside and get some fresh air before going online and saying how terrible this episode was".

Yeah, in some of the recent ones I've seen they joke about running out of ideas for storyline. Is lulz, I don't really mind them. I still watch because I enjoy The Simpsons, they're getting pretty bland though. (Yes, I'm online saying how terrible they are)
