So what do you think of "offensive"? I find it to be a very overused word today, similar to the word "hero". Seems everyone's offended by something these days. Thoughts?

Haha, pretty much sums up what I think about it.

It seems with some things people don't take offense to something until a bunch of other people take offense to it first. If I remember right, the whole Andrew Sachs and Russell Brand/Jonathan Ross prank call thing only generated X number of complaints when it was actually aired live on radio but once it hit the papers and people heard recordings and Youtube videos of the call, thousands more phoned in and complained to air their grievances despite not hearing it for themselves in the first place. The whole thing got blown out of proportion.

anyways most of the time i think that people really shouldn't take offense to this stuff, only time that i'm kinda okay with it is when its religion. The ham thing is in my opinion is an overreaction and should just be kept to oneself. The "in god we trust" thing i kinda understand but again just keep it to yourself it's not such a big issue.

I take offense to your subjective view of Nyan cats.

I try my best to not be offended, without going into details there are a few things that are offensive to me, but I try not to take it out on other people.

Eh, a overused word. I don't think people think about what they say anymore.

There's a difference between being offended and something being offensive. People often think that just because they're offended by something that is makes it offensive.

Well then what defines offensive then?

According to an online dictionary, offensive means the following:

 

Causing someone to feel deeply hurt, upset, or angry: "offensive language".

 

So yes, not properly used nowadays.

So if somebody is offended then they've found something offensive, which was my point ;)

A better question is whether being offended justifies punishment.

 

Anybody can be offended but it doesn't mean it's morally or whatsoever wrong.

I don't think that people should be punished for offending other people. Like if someone walks up to you in the street and tells you to [bleep] off, there is very little harm done. It's your responsibility on how you react to that situation.

 

Obviously if it's taken to a new level, such as causing bodily harm or seriously influencing decisions (within reason), then it's a different story. But offending someone with words is a bit ridiculous for something to be punished for.

 

Society just needs to learn how to handle those situations and it'll be fine. Putting the law into the equation doesn't really improve anything.

Well if I say that your favourite band was terrible, you'd be offended by that, but that doesn't make what I said offensive.

It's all subjective. I don't think you can really define what is offensive and what isn't because it would be the equivalent of stating an opinion as a fact.
