Bassy's Origami Gallery - Update 12/17

Featured Replies

Hello folks, I've been folding paper since I was 6, and with me being over 20 now, there are many things I've made, both my own creations and by others. After my recent purchase of a camera, I've been taking pictures of the various things I can find around the house.

I do not use any glue, adhesives, or scissors. No cuts are allowed, everything you see has been made by square sheets of paper, often holding other squares together.

The Fusé Modular Star. 30 squares, in this case index cards cut into squares:

My own creation, the Cube Hourglass, this took several months and has won several awards for educational exhibits:

My current project: A very strong cube. The following is made of just copy paper, around 10 actual sheets of paper have been used at this point, the goal is to eventually hold up a human.

Right now it holds a bowling ball:

The Eiffel Tower with one square of paper, idea by Glynn. I took his 31x31 design and scaled it down so I could use a smaller sheet of paper (normal size) and cut it in half to a 15x15 grid:

My Traditional Crane. It is just under 1/4" by 1/4" (.64cm by x64cm) dimensions. It fits on a fingernail and I can rarely find it when stored.

[spoiler=Display Pieces]Everything in here is classified under the highest difficulty level by all of the origami organizations around the world. What decides this is the scale of the model, diversity of the types of folds used, and extensive use of hard techniques to shape the paper. The majority of them were folded from an uncut 30" by 30" square of kraft paper found at my local craft shop. Current projects underway in this area are another dragon and a tarantula.

Much more to come. If you're curious on how to make some basic things, I've started a Youtube channel here: Bassjason1's Youtube Channel

As of December, I've quite a few videos on there all of varying difficulties. Please try something out that catches your eye, and I'm always taking requests!

Let me know what you think!

Wow. Epic. These must need some skill to make!! Can't wait for more!!!

That Wave Flower is really damn cool.

Those animals are particularly impressive. Are they all made from scratch without guides and such??

Didn't like Shafer's Flasher Hat though lol, just looked crumpled.

The way Shafer designed it basically makes larger and much more fancy paper a necessary step, which I don't have (nearest store that sells it is across my country). The Hercules Beetle I had some tips from the designer, but the other animals I've come up with on my own. Will have a hammerhead shark next when I get around to making it.

Modular stuff I'll include someone's last name if I haven't come up with it on my own, as well as flowers. :shades:

That is kind of intense. And really really cool. Keep it up

Epic.

Added a variation on the rose. I'll take a picture in the morning for better light as that's a tad blurry. I took out the Flasher hat, will try to get some bigger and better paper and try again. I've replaced it with my Hammerhead Shark and my own take on the traditional Crane.

I hope you enjoy looking as much as I do making! Also, I have some videos up on my channel if you want to try your hand and make some basic stuff. The newest one (uploading as I type) is my 3-D paper football.

Very cool - thanks for sharing :) I love the flowers and modular ones. Origami was way under appreciated at my schools. There was one guy who was really into it but he never really got the credit he deserved for it.

Keep them coming!

Got a better picture of my rose variation, and then added my variation on Glynn's Eiffel tower. It took quite a bit of math to figure out how to scale that thing down. He uses some crazy size paper, so there were a lot of hurdles to overcome when using just a normal size. Hope you like it, took an hour to design in my head, and 2 hours to fold.

  • Author

Added a Fair section. I'll be filling it up very soon as I'm getting ready for the first fair on my summer's agenda, meaning the things are getting folded now, more pictures tomorrow!

  • Author

Added at least one thing to each section! A video on action models, whose moving capabilities I am unable to demonstrate with just pictures (see Magic Ball and Venus Flytrap), will be made sometime tonight!

Please don't post continuously in a row. It would spam up the forums if we allowed everyone to do that. Just edit your first post and title with an updated date.

Do you make paper aeroplanes?

No problem, I'm used to having much more expanded forum rights (planned on just deleting those posts, which you can do if you want to merge em or something).

I added my new rose model, that I invented this morning. A video on how to make it will be up in a few hours or less on my channel.

To answer your question, I curiously didn't start folding paper airplanes until a few years into my hobby. I have several books written by various teams that enter competitions to make the longest flying or farthest, or fastest, etc. Most of them were world record holders at some time. Off the top of my head I know I can make the 2004 world record design for farthest flyer, but I haven't actually made any paper airplanes as we use them for a long time. I did make a bi-plane (1 set of wings on top, other on bottom, with a propeller at the front) maybe two years ago, but that never flew very well (too heavy).

It's an interesting subject, but I guess it's not exactly my "style" you could say.

I wish I had the patience lol...

Going to see my exhibit tomorrow, will bring the camera. I've recently made a Sloth design as well as a Stingray. As soon as I fold them out of some good quality paper I'll upload them. May just split animals into a section of their own.

Here's John Montroll's Blue Shark, that I folded of course with blue paper:

Very nice, i always admired people who can do that. It shows a great understanding of basic form and design. Rather than using fancy tools or tricks to get something right, you make it out of some of the most basic, and plentiful material

I finally found some very large kraft paper at my local craft store, and promptly set to blowing some minds within my circle of friends. I have added a display piece section containing my most difficult pieces. After one or two more are completed, I'm being asked by my university's art department to put them on display.

My favorite piece is the turtle, because of the shell pattern. I took some pictures of various stages of making it, so if you need any help understanding how that is just one uncut square sheet of paper, let me know!

Very nice additions. Oh and the turtle is awesome

I sent in a submission to the Jagex Gallery, the Pre-Skeletal Wyvern. It's in its own spoiler near the top for now with a link to a time lapse of me making it. I added a Pteranodon of my own design to the animals section, and another dragon in the Display pieces.

Hopefully they'll like the wyvern as much as I enjoyed designing it.

Dang, the stuff you make is just amazing. I'm stuck with paper cranes. x)

Eagerly awaiting more in the future. :)
