The Second Thousand - A Noob's Journey (Less Than 80 Levels Left)

Not a whole lot going on these past few days. The only thing really of note that I accomplished was level 95 in woodcutting:

[spoiler=Chop Chop]woodcuttinglvl95.png

Nice, but still quite a way from level 99.

I received my 20th consecutive slayer task, so I went to see Chaeldar in the beautiful suburbs of Fairy Town, so I could get a better slayer point bonus. 144 jellies. I hate fighting those things. They're far away, even once in the slayer dungeon, and they hit regularly. I figure that the best way to attack them is ranged, using dragonhide armor. I went there and fought about a half dozen, but got sick of them so I popped back to Falador. I fletched and strung a number of yew longbows, and then sold 1,500 of them at the Grand Exchange. Later, slayer.

Runetrack's still down. I wonder if it will ever be back up. If not, that will be a huge disappointment.

  • Looks like I'll be sticking with woodcutting until I reach level 99. Spent a lot of time yesterday chopping ivy, earning 341K experience, which is by far the most experience I've earned in a single sk

Nice to see that you are back from your holiday. Congratulations on 95 woodcutting. Keep going and good luck with slayer :)

Swedishboy, training slayer just got a bit easier. Keep reading to see why.

I started my session in lovely Daemonheim, heading down to the dungeons ("Gregor, party of one!"). I completed floors five through ten, medium C6 style, and received a total of about 23,400 dungeoneering experience. That was enough to level the skill to 56 and get more than halfway through the next level. Floor five was extra fun because I caught 72 fish, earning 7,800 fishing experience. On floor ten I found every bonus room and received the most experience on a single floor to date - 6,200. This is an awfully slow skill to train solo at my level; I hear that the rate improves significantly around level 65. I hope that's true.

I took a fight break for a couple hours, fletching/stringing yew longbows for the first and selling 1,000 of them. Prices seem to be falling slightly on finished yew longs. For the second hour of this break, I used the Five-Fingered Aura in the Thieves' Guild and earned more than 50K experience, leveling thieving to 63. At one point I successfully pick-pocketed the guild trainer 22 consecutive times.

After this, level 70 attack was calling my name. I wanted to get the abyssal whip before heading back to peanut butter jelly time in the slayer dungeons. I headed to Canifis and beat up on ghouls long enough to reach the attack milestone:

[spoiler=First Level 70 Combat Skill]attacklvl70.png

As soon as I leveled, I went back to the G.E. and bought the whip for a cool 640K. Good price? Bad price? I don't care. With a whip in one hand and a dragon defender in the other, these jellies were going down. I wore some newly-purchased blue dragon-hide gear and packed my inventory full of sharks, ready to work on the 132 jellies I still had left to kill in my slayer task. With that inventory of food, I managed to kill 61 of them before quitting for the evening, resulting in nice experience as well as 27 charms (20 of them green). It took a fairly long time, but there were a couple of other players in the area so we had some fun conversation. I got to hear about one guy who just dumped his girlfriend and was planning to meet up with her best friend later that evening. Yeah, as soon as you're done killing jellies! Good luck with that. Skeptical...who, me?

Yesterday was a day of milestones for me. They were relatively minor ones, but I feel as though another small piece of my newbie nature has been erased.

The session began as most Tuesdays do - skilling in the clan citadel. Upon entering, I used the clan cape fealty bonus on farming, reaching level 50:

[spoiler=Now Where Was That Clan Herb Plot?]farminglvl50.png

The first plot I visited was the obelisk, where I trained summoning. Using the mad necklace to double my experience (I still have about 72% of the bonus left), I achieved level 50 in summoning and an overall combat level of 91:

[spoiler=Is There Summon Else Who Enjoys This Plot?]summoninglvl50.png

After using this plot for as much as Jagex allows, I spent a large chunk of time at the loom, where I leveled crafting to 79. Unless I spend all of the 2,700 in available resources here next week, it will be two weeks before reaching level 80 in this skill. I finished up in the citadel with some mining, picked up the clan ring, and charged it at the woodcutting plot (you know how this story goes by now).

Upon leaving the citadel, I snagged the JoT aura bonus tome, using it on herblore, which got me to level 50 (see a trend?):

[spoiler=About Three Fiddies In One Day]herblorelvl50.png

Ahhh, here's the real milestone of the day. With that herblore level, I now have at least level 50 in every skill:

[spoiler=50+ In Each Skill, 1,630 Levels Total]allskills50.png

10 months ago I had at least level 50 in seven skills, with many of them significantly below (farming at level 9!). I'm proud of this accomplishment; not 'got a promotion at work' proud or 'just had a baby' proud, but...well, you know what I mean. Achieving a goal in a game feels good, even if it doesn't have real-life consequences.

Full of confidence, I took my shiny abyssal whip and went back to the Rellekka Slayer Dungeon to eliminate the final 61 jellies of my task. I filled my inventory with sharks, and did not even need all of them. Funny what a different weapon and appropriate armor can do. Now I am actually a bit of a fan of jellies, because they have decent drops, particularly the charms. I leveled slayer to 56, received 31 (mostly green) charms and also picked up 50 slayer points upon completion of my 20th consecutive task. I am still pretty far off from the slayer helmet, but it will come in time.

There were two other players fighting the jellies alongside me. We talked briefly about various topics, including the combat beta. One player checked his email and then announced with great pleasure that he was selected. Great news! However, in his glee he forgot to keep an eye on his lifepoints and he was killed. The other player and I weighed our options if he did not make it back within five minutes: leave the loot alone, pick it up to give back to him, or split the loot and leave the area. She suggested that we pick up whatever dropped and wait around for him to return so that we could give it back, and I agreed, although we set a time limit for his return. The grave marker disappeared and I let her grab everything aside from a pair of dragon boots. He returned not a minute after and, true to our word, we returned everything. He was surprised and grateful, and insisted on giving me 200K gold as a token of his appreciation. I tried to refuse but he would not let me. Who am I to turn down the reward for a good deed, even if it was higher than the value of the equipment I returned?

Don't let anyone tell you that all the friendly, honest, enjoyable players are gone from the Runescape worlds. They are out there.

Combine the Mad Necklace with a substantial slayer task, and watch the levels accumulate!

I received a task of 87 werewolves, and I remembered a nice safe spot north of the bank in Canifis, so I donned my blue dragonhide gear and my Dorgeshuun crossbow and started shooting some werewolves. This task took a long time, given my low ranged level, but I didn't have to use any food so it was free experience in a couple of my lower-levelled skills. The Mad Necklace made the experience earned very satisfying. I received 200 slayer experience with every kill, and over the course of the task I leveled slayer once (57), ranged three times (58-60 - forgot to save the picture) and constitution once (70):

[spoiler=More Lifepoints! Hooray! ]constitutionlvl70.png

The drops were also nice, and included a few pieces of rune/mithril equipment, wolf bones worth approximately 550 gold apiece on the GE and about 50 charms (40 gold). In all, this one task provided nearly 110K of experience, and I still have approximately 50% of the charge left on the necklace. I'm very happy that I used it on this task.

I chopped ivy for about 90 minutes after completing the task, passing the nine million experience mark. Just four million to go.

Over the past two days I also had a few SoF spins resulting in three medium xp lamps, one in farming and two that I used on herblore.

Keep up the good work, your doing a great job working through the second thousand! Your blog is very interesting to read, I personally find the way you layout each day's achievements entertaining and I'm excited to see you progress all the way to 2000 and beyond :).

I just read your blog and it is amazing man.Keep up the good work and you definitely have a follower :thumbup:

Congratulations on 50+ in all skills! It is really a nice achievement. Now wear that orange cape with pride :)

A big congratulations on that 70 Attack and whip as well. The whip certainly is a great weapon, and I am sure you will have much more use of it in your future RS adventures.

Keep slaying. Poor jellies :P

Congrats on 50+ all! It's one of those milestones that really feel like achievement. After that it's just step at a time towards all 60+, all 70+ and so forth. Congrats also on 95 woodcutting, that's not far from 99 anymore. First 99 is always the best, and it's cool you're going towards the one skill that you apparently enjoy the most. Instead of going for easy one, or impressive one or whatever one just for the reason of having the skill 99. Just a while ago everyone was going for skill cape, just the sake of having one. Now that we got so many more capes (achievement capes, max capes, completionist capes, tokhaars, fire capes, soul wars capes and so on) having that 99 skill cape in your back doesn't seem so must anymore. Nonetheless, 99 is a big achievement in a game like this!

Good luck with slayer and combat too. Combat offers alot of fun activities in this game, that you will most certainly enjoy (I think), so keep up the good work! All those little buffs that you get with higher levels and better gear make the combat alot more interesting, and thereforth you should consider that you're still in the very beginning of that journey. Slayer helmet is awesome improvement, so is abyssal whip. Now whenever you feel like starting group dungeoneering, going for that rapier might be a good idea sooner than later. It requires 80 attack to wield, so you're not in a hurry though.

Also you might want to consider getting a gear with more focus on it's prayer bonuses, and instead of using food on tasks, use protection prayer and boosting attack / strenght prayers. They make combat alot faster, and prayer potions aren't that expensive anyways. Using best prayers, best potions and best gear you have make combat and slayer alot more enjoyable, even if it costs a bit more than surviving solely on food. Besides, you wouldn't have to bank for food between trips. Food for the thought! ;)

Most importantly, have fun and keep us entertained with your day-to-day adventures. They're a good read. :cool:

u5zhkTY.gif

Congratulations! It's a great achievement :)

I look forward to reading about your progress as your character's skills grow - here's to many more achievements :thumbsup:

Thanks for the comments and support; it was great to see comments from new posters to my blog, as well as from the regulars.

Sydan, I took your advice and purchased a bunch of prayer and strength potions. I tried out my new strategy on a slayer task of 74 cyclopes, but not before playing all five mini-games long enough to have at least 200 tokens in each. I like to use the tokens from each game because that allows me to have a stack of noted big bones in my inventory. Using protection prayers and strength potions, I plowed through this task more quickly than before and received two more dragon defenders along with 148 big bones. Fighting the cyclossus was much easier as well, although I never got a complete kill on him because he would get to about 1/3rd lifepoints, fling me away and then another cyclops would start attacking me instead. I wasn't mad. During the task, I leveled strength to 69.

After finishing off the one-eye guys, I went back for another task and was assigned 81 killerwatts. Huh? What in the hell are they? Is that an actual mob name? I looked them up in a guide, purchased the boots I would need from Vannaka, and then...went to the bank and fletched yew longbows. I can take only a certain amount of combat in one stretch and I had apparently reached my limit with the prior task. I fletched and fletched until reaching level 91:

[spoiler=Throw The Stick! I Want To Play Fletch!]fletchinglvl91.png

Notice that cool dragon ceremonial hat? It's worth as much to me as dragon defenders #3 and #4 are, but I wore it to spice up the leveling picture. Habanero peppers have nothing on that hat.

I also used the JoT aura twice, enabling me to level herblore to 51.

Mid-Year Update

Some stats, now that RuneTrack is back up:

Total experience earned since Jan 1, 2012 = 21,792,000 - 3.63 million per month. I'm very pleased with that pace.

Total experience earned to date = 28,507,000. If I earn experience at the same rate over the second half of the year as I did the first, I'll hit 50 million total exp by 12/31. Assuming the world doesn't end.

Levels earned YTD (as of June 30) = 386 - 64 per month average. That's going to slow way down over the next six months.

Total levels = 1,636. My goal is to reach 1,800 by the end of the year.

Hours played YTD = 377 - 63 per month, on average. I earned more than a level per hour. I don't know if I'll be able to keep to a pace of 2 hours/day, given what I see on the real-life horizon, but I think I'll need to in order to reach 1,800 total levels.

Total time played = 30 days (720 hours).

Experience per hour = 57,800 YTD, 39,600 overall. That's what a shit-ton of woodcutting, crafting and fletching will do for one's averages (see below for more precise definition of 'shit-ton').

Leveling/experience breakdown YTD:

Most levels earned in a skill = 44 (runecrafting - thanks Runespan!), 30 (crafting - thanks clan citadel!), 21 (smithing - thanks again clan citadel!), 20 (hunter), 19 (summoning)

I gained at least 10 levels in every skill aside from magic (5), fishing (6) and strength (8)

Most experience earned in a skill = 6.44M (woodcutting), 4.74M (fletching), 1.70M (crafting), 1.70M (firemaking), 1.31M (cooking), 1.21M (runecrafting). I think this cements my reputation as a skiller, not a killer.

I earned less than one million experience in every other skill. The least I earned in any skill was 75K in herblore, and between 80-90K in prayer, farming, hunter, summoning and construction. No surprises there, as they're all my lowest-leveled skills.

Most exp earned in a day - 609K

25th best daily exp amount - 267K

Every one of my top 25 exp days occurred in 2012.

Highest-ranked skill - crafting. I'm in the top 95K, the only skill in which I'm ranked in the top 100,000. At 12/31/11 I was ranked 481K.

Lowest-ranked skills - combat. Other than slayer, I'm no higher than 462K in any combat skill.

Goals for Second Half of 2012

- Reach 1,800 total levels

- Reach 50 million total experience

- 125 quest points. That's still very low, but it will mean an average of 2-3 quests each month.

- At least one level 99. Likely will be woodcutting, but haven't ruled out fletching or runecrafting yet. I suppose firemaking is possible, but can you say 'boring'?

- Level 75 attack, strength and magic; level 70 defense and ranged. I am completely in the dark about how this goal will play out once the combat rework is released.

- At least level 55 in each skill. I'd love to shoot for 60 in each, but that's probably too optimistic. Ah, what the hell, let's make this goal 60+ in each skill. If I fall short, so be it.

- Still playing and updating this blog at the end of the year. One never knows. Guild Wars II might be incredible. Some other game might draw my attention away. I might get too busy with work.

Thanks to everyone who reads this blog, and additional thanks to all who post comments. Bring on the second half of 2012. Let's keep it fun.

A lot of nice stats, but honestly I found the goals section more interesting. 1,8k total and 60+ all skills are no small goals. But with the progress you have done in the past...I would say you will be able to make it. With not too much trouble.

Good luck!

I find the statistics interesting, but they're basically for me so I can track my progress. I know they are a lot more dull to others. :blink: As for the goals, I think that if I continue to play at a similar pace, they're all reasonable.

I gained more than 550K experience in the past two sessions, which is a lot for me. I entered Runespan vowing to not exit before reaching level 77 so that I could reach additional platforms and siphon from blood esswraiths and pools. I seem to be earning between 60-65K per hour while spanning, which is helped by stumbling on the yellow wizard once or twice per hour. I achieved my new single day high in runecrafting (204K) and leveled twice (76, 77). I should have sufficient Runespan points to get the wicked top once I reach level 80.

On Tuesday I earned more than 350K total experience, primarily through clan citadel skilling (of course) and chopping ivy using the clan ring bonus (of course). I spent time at the summoning, crafting and mining plots, leveling only in mining (67). I also spent some time fletching, and talked with a player who was a DIY-er. He had chopped 35,000 magic logs (said it took him four months of regular playing), spun 35,000 flax and was nearing completion of 35,000 nature runes. He still had a portion of the 35,000 logs left to fletch into longbows. The dedication it would take to do all that is impressive, and it's something I am highly doubtful I would have the patience to complete.

Jack of Trades aura tomes and clan fealty bonus for the week were used on farming, getting me close to a new level in that skill.

Total levels = 1,642

This is barely more than a 'bump' update. Although I did earn nearly 200K experience, about 99% of it was at a Grand Exchange bonfire, either throwing maples on the blaze or cooking lobsters over it. I managed to level firemaking to 81 and freed eight fire spirits. One of those little twerps gave me a whopping four ashes in gratitude. Yeah, you're so welcome, happy to save your life, pal.

I talked for a bit with the other players around the bonfire, but they had little of interest to say. "Please give me some blogging material," I thought, but alas, it was not meant to be. So... I ended the session by using the JoT bonus tome on farming, getting that skill to level 51.

For fans of pictures, I'm sorry to disappoint you. This is the third straight post sans pics, but I have done nothing picture-worthy lately.

A very busy weekend resulted in time enough on-line only for a couple of slayer tasks:

- 81 killerwatts - for my first time ever, I entered the interdimensional rift in the attic of Draynor Manor to find these beasts, wearing my newly-acquired insulated boots. I used prayer protection from ranged and meleed them. A 50% charm drop rate and a mystic fire staff (alched for 25,500) made the trip worthwhile, and I also got two steam runes which aren't worth much of anything but are the first ones I have found.

- 101 pyrefiends - I switched to my ranging gear (red d-hide, crossbow with enchanted pearl bolts) and burned through these creatures like a Florida brushfire. 12 charms and zero good drops later, I finished. At least I leveled ranged to 61.

I traveled back to Vannaka and requested another task, receiving cyclopes again. Back to the mini-games in a future session.

I used two JoT tomes on summoning, along with a SoF exp lamp, resulting in level 51 in that skill. I also got a 50K coin spin.

Total levels = 1,646

Very nice progress and good luck with your goals.

Thanks, Ezee, for checking in!

I spent the past couple of sessions skilling:

Monday - chopped some yew trees, fletched the logs into longbows, strung them, and then alched them. I think this is a bit of a money-loser, but I don't remember the price I purchased the nature runes. Worst-case scenario, it was cheap magic experience. I alched enough of them (about 550) to level magic to 70:

[spoiler=You Have To Believe, I Am Magic]magiclvl70.png

Wow! Now I can group teleport to Moonclan Island! I have no idea what that means.

Tuesday - if you read this blog with any regularity, you should know that a Tuesday session most likely includes skilling in the clan citadel. Yesterday was no exception. I started at the summoning plot, getting the maximum available experience there that the game allows (and I remembered to wear the Mad Necklace). Next, I spent time crafting, getting to level 80 and passing two million experience in that skill:

[spoiler=Fourth Level 80+ Skill]craftinglvl80.png

I finished maxing for the week at the barbeque, leveling cooking to 79 with only a few resources to spare. I then charged my clan ring at the woodcutting plot, and spent time chopping ivy until the ring crumbled into dust. I got a couple bird's nests, and one had a yew seed. I was surprised to see that they're worth more than 70K.

I also reached 30 million total experience, but forgot to grab a screen capture, so we'll pretend that isn't any sort of milestone.

Thanks, What is this madness (nice name, by the way)!

Not much to report in this update. Here's a summary of what I've been doing:

- I helped Oomad Aarow with Gielenor Games preparations a few times:

[spoiler=Olympic Fever, Or Just A Head Cold?]gielenorgames.png

I made gold medals, steel girders, and various types of pies, earning a small amount of experience and a bunch of contribution points. I must have glossed over the explanation of those points, since I don't know how they can be used.

- I chopped a fair amount of ivy while reading World Series of Poker Main Event updates. I don't remember if I mentioned in this blog how much I enjoy playing poker. I really enjoy playing poker. There, now I've mentioned it. I was fortunate with the chopping as one of the bird nests had a yew seed (the second I've received in a week). 70K is still a significant amount to me.

- I fletched and strung the last of my yew logs (about 2,000), and then alched about 1,150 of them, resulting in level 71 magic.

- The alching, combined with selling nests and seeds in my possession, resulted in a new personal high in gold - 6.8 million. Yes, I know most high-level players have that much behind their seat cushions, but hey, it makes me feel rich.

- I joined the bonfire crew at the Grand Exchange on world 86, alternating between lighting maples and cooking lobsters. The level of conversation was stunningly disappointing.

Leveling four different skills in a single day is not that common for me any longer, but I achieved it yesterday in a fairly lengthy session (by my standards). I spent the majority of the session at a bonfire in the Grand Exchange in World 86. The level of discourse once again left much to be desired. Insults flowing back and forth were interrupted by cries to play various gambling games, primarily involving flowers. Various singers and bands were either built up or shot down. Suffice to say that Carly Rae Jepsen arguments were not distracting me from the mission at hand, which was to level cooking. With 1,000 raw lobsters in the bank, I set to it, and reached level 80:

[spoiler=Leveling Picture S**t-Bombed]cookinglvl80.png

Neither one of those comments came from me. And what's with that skull in the bonfire?

With that, cooking became my fifth skill to reach level 80 and two million experience. I cooked a few more inventories of lobsters, and then switched to burning maples. I spent about an hour adding to the bonfires, and leveled firemaking to 82. I lost count but my notes say I released 'a ton' of fire spirits in that time frame, so I ended up with a significant amount of charms as reward.

Standing in basically one place for that long made me antsy for some combat, so I suited up and headed to the Warrior Guild for my slayer task of 104 cyclopes. I played each of the mini-games until I had at least 300 points in each, and then entered the fray with super strength potions and prayer potions to use on protection against melee. There is an amazing difference between fighting without potions and prayer protection, and with them both. I'm sure that you all know that already, but for me this is a fairly new discovery. Even the level 156 Cyclossus was not very difficult, and I earned 350 slayer experience and a cyclopean helmet for defeating it. The task resulted in a slayer level (58), a defense level (67), more than 200 big bones, and five more dragon defenders. I know these things are worthless after the first two (always good to have a spare), but I just am unable to leave them on the ground untouched. So...I now have eight of them in the bank.

My next task is 62 moss giants, but I called it a day after cleaning my dragon boots of the cyclopes' remains.

Tuesday - Official Clan Citadel Skilling Day

That should be the banner every time I describe a Tuesday playing session. I started off on the SoF, getting a small experience lamp which I used to level summoning to 52. I'm looking forward to using my gold charms on spirit terrorbird pouches. That also raised my overall combat level to 92. I feel so much more powerful now.

I entered the citadel and used my clan fealty bonus on herblore, reaching level 52 in that skill. Teleporting to the obelisk, I put on my Mad Necklace and trained summoning until reaching the 270-resource cap. I spent a little time mining, and then switched back and forth between firemaking (for charcoal) and smithing (using the charcoal I created). I used the Mad Necklace again while smithing, and leveled that skill to 64. This leaves me with 48% of the bonus experience remaining on the necklace (about 120K), which I plan to use on prayer at some point.

After leveling smithing, I maxed for the week at the loom, earning about 100K crafting experience. I then got the clan ring, charged it at the woodcutting plot (the only time I visit that plot, by the way), and used it while chopping ivy. For a nice change of pace, there were a couple of friendly choppers at the southern wall of Falador, so we engaged in some interesting conversation for an hour that seemed to go by much more quickly than that. At one point, one of the players starting using the customization feature that was just added to the game, and a dressing room materialized out of thin air around her character:

[spoiler=Maximum of Seven Items, Please]generalstoredressingroom.png

I will now conclude my post with an update of my total levels.

Total levels = 1,657

I feel so much more powerful now.

I lol'd.

Proceed, progress.

Good to see you're still going strong, I wish my clan's citadel had crafting and summoning training features!

Low_Levelled, glad my posts are generating a laugh or two.

JAMjE, the tier level of the citadel is the primary reason I'm in this clan. The leadership is solid, but there are a ton of immature clan members, and that really comes out in the clan chat. It seems to me that the clan chat could be so much more valuable, as a resource for information and as a way to get to know fellow players, and we're just not taking advantage of that.

I started my most recent session by clicking on Solomon's Store, as a dialog box popped up in the middle of my screen upon log-in. I used the 200 free runecoins to purchase the lumberjack animation. Wow, with the 10% member discount I can just afford it. I wonder if that was intentional? Hmmm... The animation is interesting, but unfortunately it does not show when chopping ivy, just on actual trees. Since you all know that ivy is probably my closest friend on Runescape, this is mildly frustrating. At least I didn't use any real money to purchase it.

I spent my playing time yesterday working through two slayer tasks: 62 moss giants and 91 jellies. For the moss giants, I ranged them in the Edgeville Dungeon from the safe spots, and collected 24 charms and a dragon spear which dropped thanks to my Ring of Wealth. Thanks, Ring of Wealth! For the jellies, I kept the dragon hide equipment, switched to my abyssal whip and dragon defender, and used prayer potions (against melee) and super strength potions, along with a handful of sharks, to make it through the entire task in one trip. These are so much better now that I have some idea of what I'm doing. I collected 38 charms from these creatures.

The most interesting part of the second task, however, was the announcement that the 200,000,000th account had just been created on Runescape. I was quick enough to grab a screenshot:

Since I'm not interested in the glasses or the boogie bow, that picture will serve as my memento of this historic occasion. Just think, if I hadn't started playing last year, that milestone wouldn't have occurred for another half of a second. You're welcome, Runescape.

Total levels = see last post (1,657 if you're too lazy)

You're almost down to third page. This can't do.

By the way, if you're using protection prayers already, you don't really need to wear dragonhides anymore. When using protection prayers on task, it's better to just maximise your strenght or prayer bonuses. To be honest, it's best to maximise them on all tasks.

Nice progress like usual. :)
