Need a point in the right direction

I just started playing this game for the first time in a few years. I never got really far into the game but when I did play all I did was mine and make armor.

It seems a lot has changed and there are more things to do. I finished the first set of tasks thinking it was kind of a tutorial but now I see there are plenty more left to do. Is it worth continuing the tasks for something to do?

What exactly are you supposed to do when you start a character in this game? Right now I'm mining/fishing/smithing to make some food and water to go into the lumbridge catacombs to level my str/attack while completing this one task I have.

Am I going in the right direction this game wants me to go? I see your suppsed to level like any other MMO but what is the point of the leveling? When I reach certain levels do I go do certain quests for higher level armors or could I just make my own?

Runescape always seemed kinda confusing since they just throw you in the game and say "have at it"

Really what I want to ask is, What do you do in this game and how do I do some awesome quests that have awesome rewards. I'm thinking of buying a membership if it really catches onto me.

Talk to me here or in game if you like, I'd like to "apprentice" under someone if you will. My in game name is AppleShampew

Welcome to Tip.it.

The entire point of Runescape is you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. Personally, I find it fun to do quests and gain the skill levels required for quests. If I don't me a requirement for a quest I will train that skill until I do. Only quest I have left now is Nomad.

I find that the task system is great for learning about the many different aspects of the game but it only scratches the surface of what you can do. I think you should keep at the task system, try a few quests, attempt every skill, until you find something that you really enjoy. Once you find your on little thing, nurture it until you are a master.

I know lots of other people, mostly other members like myself, like to do dungeneering or boss hunting. I have been wanting to get into boss hunting for a while as it looks fun, I just haven't made much of an effort to find a group yet.

tl;dr: Train what you love.

Trying is just the first step in failure.

Just depends on what your interested in. I myself like to fight so I go and dungeon with my friends and do it there.

There is just so much to do in this game that I can't really explain what to do. But as stated above just try a little of everything and see what you like to do.

Thank you, and thank you for your response. :)

I always liked the idea of making your own armor. I'll level that as I go through the quests/tasks.

I also liked how you can level strength, wear armor and use melee attacks. Then also you can wear cloth and use magic. Is there a certain way to craft wizard robes/hats ? I'd like magic to become my main fighting skill. Can you make staffs as well?

Its not worth becoming members until you have a better idea of if you will continue playing and what you want to do.

It sounds to me that you're interested in a more diy style of play than most people, theres nothing wrong with this but I will warn you that it will get much slower to level your mining/smithing as you get to higher levels.

If you want to focus on magic then I recommend doing the rune mysteries quest, this will allow you to make your own runes and start using the runecrafting skill. The quest itself is pretty easy, though it does involve a bit of walking.

As others said, following the tasks is a good idea if that's something you're interested in, some of the elite tasks (members only) require quite high levels. If something takes your interest however, investigate it, most things in this game can be left and come back to when you want. The game is very open and you can decide what you want to do.

the problem there is that by level 40 defense you will need level 99 smithing to make yourself the best armor, thus making it far more practical to simply buy it.

Alright, so it seems to quest and get your attack/str/def up and buy new armor. Then as you go level your money making skills.

But what if I leveled smiting as I leveled mining?

You'll level mining faster than smithing if you "do it yourself", as in not buying ores/bars for smithing. Also, as stated, geetin 13-odd million experience DIY smithing takes a LONG time if you want to make your own rune armour. Better to sell the ores, buy the armour and kill monsters (or PvP) for more money at a faster pace.

I think the task system is nice for newcomers, as the reward is usefull as well. As a previous poster stated, I like questing as well, and training the levels required to be able to do them.

I recommend doing the F2P quests (all) and train your combat skills (melee especially) to approximately 50+ before joining members.

Runescape is far easier without a DIY attitude. It boils down to doing whatever you find the most fun and best money, and then using that money to buy other things which lead to more fun or money. If you really want to mine 10000s of ores and make 10000s of bars to make 1000s of armour sets thats completely upto you. Or you could just kill dragons for 10 minutes, sell the bones and hides, and buy that armour. :P

Combat is often the best money making method as many items are not craftable by players, but dropped by enemies on death instead. Plus runescape has a noticable 'bot' problem, which are highly advanced automated players controlled by a macro and are designed to do things such as mining and fishing, which they sell, which lowers the demand for the item, which lowers the overall price, which lowers your money made from doing many of these skills.

I'm not saying you shouldn't play as DIY, many players do it for an extra challenge and get satisfaction from doing it, it's just probably not the best idea for your first time starting runescape as it can be difficult enough to get into even when you buy whatever you want and need.

You should probably train all your skills a few levels and get a feel for the game mechanics, and once you're about 30 combat you should start dungeoneering as it's a great intro to the game and a very useful skill to train to get access to some of the most useful items in the game (including the most powerful weapons)

I'd just use the task system as guidance for the first few hours/days, then moving on to task sets to get some rewards, and doing quests as you unlock them.

If you want to have a clear-cut levelling path set out for you I suggest becoming a zerker pure, which is a strong medium-level account (high level for a pure) built around 45 defence and 60-80 attack. Zerkers are built for player versus player combat, but they can access almost all content and perform well in many combat situations. The reason I suggest this is that there's a list of what a good zerker pure is, so you can just tick things off. Read this guide for details.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm understanding this game more and more.

Monster hunting and doing dungeons sounds fun. I wouldn't mind getting into that sort of thing. Is it necessary to become a p2p member to dive deep into either of these? Or can I start out doing this f2p and then go further in p2p?

Thanks for the zerker guide. I'll look into that. I've been leveling my combat lately.

Is there any point to leveling strength if your not a member? I see strength is a req for a lot of member weps. If I gain str does it give my attacks more power let me hit harder?

Yep, your strength level, boosted by potions, prayers etc. (and +8) is multiplied with (gear bonus + 64) to determine your max hit (and a few other p2p items affect max hit directly).

Yes, the wilderness is the free for all no rules pvp area. There are two bosses there, one isn't technically in the wilderness but requires a trip through it to get there (the King Black Dragon) and the other just wanders around the p2p part of the wilderness and annoys people. Neither drops anything good though :/.

Well, start with levelling until 100+. Then ask me again :P. Seriously it's very hard to say where you should start monster hunting at those low levels.

I wish I knew where to tell you to go... I wasn't even training combat when I was f2p, when I went p2p I started training slayer, which in turn trained my combat skills, as well as gave me the fun and variety of tasks to keep me interested. Even now at 99 slayer and 136 combat I don't have the stomach for most lengthy camping sessions. (And on an unrelated note, 247 kalphites does not mean 247 kalphite queen kills. Never again!)

My advice is to do quests. Generally speaking, they're the best content the game has to offer, and one of the main things RuneScape does better than other MMORPGs. There are currently 175 quests in the game; about 11% of them are available to free players.

I recommend doing a bunch of quests, raising your skill levels until you can do more quests, doing those quests, and repeating until you've done all the quests (feeling free to get sidetracked by anything else you find amusing, of course). Then once you've done them all, you win the game. toot.gif

This gives you better "Goal levels" than the Zerker Pure plan (a list of the minimum level requirements to complete all quests can be found here) because you'll have a more well-rounded experience and take better advantage of RuneScape's best content i.e. the quests. The Zerker Pure is built around PvP Combat, which is okay, but very shallow compared to the other MMORPGs out there that you could be playing instead. If you want to play a PvP game, RuneScape is not the best one out there; its quests, however, are top-notch.

Edit: And don't go using walkthroughs to hold your hand every step of the way. You'll have less fun if you do that. I recommend using the official QuestHelp function when you get stuck.

So, I've been leveling my combat skills and have a combat level of 37. I've been mining a little bit too and getting that up there to make some money. I've gotten full mith armor and an addy longsword. I've done about 6 quests and they are pretty fun.

I really like killing bosses. I want to kill big monsters and get leet armor and weapons from them. I still haven't leveled any of my magic or gotten far into ranged. I'd like to do both of those things too.

Is full rune the best I can do as a f2p member or can I get drops from monsters that are high level? When can I start dungeoneering? I think I read something that said the drops I get in dungeioneering I can only use while dungeoneering. Is this true?

I can't really think of any bosses at the lower levels that aren't quest related (so 1 off fights). Full rune, is with the exception of gravite weapons (from dungeoneering) and corrupt dragon (really expensive, only last 30(?) minutes), the best you can get in f2p.

In dungeoneering you can not take any of the items you have from the rest of the game into the dungeons where you train the skill (with the exception of the ring of kinship). In these dungeons you can however bind items which you find there, at level 1 you can bind 1 item and 125 of one type of arrow or rune. These bound items will be with you at the start of every floor you do, but all other items from the previous floor will be gone. I recommend binding the best 2 handed weapon you can use for the item bind, but we can get into the specifics of dungeoneering when you're ready to begin training it.

Well, Dungeoneering has some bosses that are pretty fun to fight. One at the end of every dungeon. They don't drop items, though. The closest thing to a boss outside of Dungeoneering would be Revenants, which are very tough and located in the Wilderness. They have some rare drops, but are very difficult and dangerous to kill. Boss hunting gets a lot better in P2P, where you have access to the God Wars Dungeon and Tormented Demons and Glacors and what-have-you.

Full rune is the best you can do in F2P for the head, torso, and leg slots. Rune berserker shield is a little bit better than kiteshield, but it needs to be recharged every few hours by playing the Fist of Guthix minigame. Rune gloves are not technically part of the rune armor set, but they are the best gloves; they need FoG to recharge as well, but unlike the shield, you only need to do this once unless you die with them. Corrupt dragon gear exists, but it's not so much "equipment" as it is "30-minute stat buff". Gravite weapons are better than rune, but they require a lot of tokens, and they're instantly obsoleted if you ever become P2P, no refunds available.

well, I want to be leeeet. If I go p2p what armor should I go for? And what bosses should I kill to get the best drops in the game. It seems if you mine and smith the only reason is to make black/mithy/addy/rune armor to make money. Is this the case?

Whats up with the dragon armor? Is this the best? And is it it really worth it to train magic if you can own as melee? It seems magic would take a lot more work to get a bunch of runes every time you want to cast spells and fight bosses.
