Would you have done this...?

I think I'd have either just ignored it (probably), or would have (less likely) started talking to him in the same way.

"I want everything with that -- that's everything, got that?"

"OK, here's one with everything. That's everything -- you got that? -- everything. That comes to $4.90 -- that's 4 dollars and 90 cents..."

Etc.

But... I'd have probably ignored it to avoid confrontation and risk getting in trouble with my boss. Then maybe I'd have told the boss about it, and seen what could be done; nothing, probably, but it'd be worth a try.

I would've been the bigger man and kept my composure. Doing anything else would solve nothing and just waste more time/be more of a hassle.

This is the way the world ends. Look at this [bleep]ing shit we're in man. Not with a bang, but with a whimper. And with a whimper, I'm splitting, Jack.

In those situation I just ignore all the big mouthing, help the guy and then go to my collegues to vent about the annoying customer. Customer is king after all.

Oh, there is one occasion when I always get a bit 'rude', but that's not really rude. When a customer comes to me and says "I can't find this or that" I reply with Good day madame, how can I help you?", and then they just say, oh sorry, say good day and continue with what they wanted to know. :)

Actuley all customers have the right to be served, we cant send them away, because thats agianst their rights. Now this guys really ment what he was doing, and i could tell. The problem we get alot at our store, is that people take advantage of us. And technicly "The customer is always right" thing does not exist. It says it nowhere in our manuals. We must be curtious to the customers (Hey i was curtiouse, i just said something and walked away, a manager took care of the rest of the order for me).Im tired of [wagon] who mess with us, demanding stuff, and complaining and whining. Do you know how many free things our store gives out! Atleast a few fries a day is given out becuase other people lie. We lose tons of money just because people want specific things on their burgures, and dont tell us untill after, cuasing us to throw out a burger, and make a new one. I once had to remake a spicy sandwich three times! (not me but the screw up was she not telling us properly). thats freakin like $12!

Im asking not to be on cash for awhile, its too much...

You're telling me that not serving an offensive customer at a shop is breaching their human rights? Seriously?

I actually don't know the answer, could someone tell me? If so...my God...

It could easily be true...to stop restaurant/fast food owners from being racist and just denying service to all *insert minority group*. I don't know if it makes sense or not, but that would probably be the rationale.

EDIT: To answer the original post, if I was in your position I think I probably would have handled it okay. Then again, I've never worked a cash register, so I don't know how easily I could handle something like that at the end of a long day. I might say something like "Dude, I do speak English," and try and joke around a bit to get him to warm up a little.

If I was really faced with the true Jack of All Wagons, though, I might snap. Especially if I made a careless mistake with the change, and he caught me. That would tick me off.

I could have sworn that you can refuse service to anyone, but with what Scruffy said a store could just not let a certain group eat there. Hell, theres probaly a fine line between who you have to and don't have to serve.

Like some one said in the thread. "Dont mess with people that handle your food"

I see your points Scruffy & Nad. The thing is, would that apply to people who are being deliberately offensive to you? (I'm not saying that being offensive causes you to lose your human rights) Surely some common sense is needed, but I fear that Scruffy could be right.

I assume this was all happening in America - and if that assumption is right, then yes you can refuse service to anyone you want based on how they are acting.

The only way it violates human rights (as you suggested earlier I think) would be if you were denying them service based on race, gender, sexuality, etc., but to deny them service based on how they act while they are at the store is completely acceptable.

I don't think I could work in the food industry... I don't think I'm very good at handling people, especially when they get an attitude with me. I have a tendency to want to tell them exactly where they can go.

Overworked and underpaid you guys in the service business are. You have to put up with too much crap.

I've worked at a few restaurants, and I can honestly say that if you don't suck up to the customers, no matter how rude they are, your boss could really go crazy on you and possibly fire you for "ahem" not doing your job. I understand how you feel about that because I've had similar experiences also. So what, if we work at this particular place? That doesn't mean that you could just prance around in here like little daisy and tell me what's right and watnot. That's just plain arrogance and disrespectfulness, which was why I quit at those places. The thing is that they never place themselves in our shoes and think, "gee, the guy must be a hard working person, not bickering and being so polite to me, so I really should give him some slack". You would think that they'd have the common sense or at least some decency to know how hectic restaurants can be. You don't need to take that from people like him, because you're a human being, the same as everyone else.
