No there's no brain work, because it is impossible without a calculator or computer, and I mean literally impossible.

Anything a computer can do a human can do, given enough time...

Since a computer is merely capable of flicking a very large number of switches, very quickly, and using binary to do math.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

You know that trig can be used on triangles that aren't right triangles, right?

Right, you have the more difficult part already. So now we have...

A = -2w^2 + 40w

Now notice that in a parabola, the maximum (for a downward facing parabola) or the minimum (upward facing parabola) has the x-coordinate as the axis of symmetry. The axis of symmetry can be found by using the following formula:

-b/2a

The a and b come from the standard form of the quadratic expression

Y-coordinate = ax^2 + bx + c

In the first equation, the a is -2 and the b is 40. Thusly, the axis of symmetry is -40/2(-2) = 10. Therefore, the x coordinate of the maximum is 10. We can use this to find the y coordinate (which is what you need to solve the problem) by plugging in the x coordinate into all instances of x (which is w, in this case).

A = -2(10)^2 + 40 (10)

A = -200 + 400

A = 200

I'm unsure if you learned these things or whether I should go ahead with your teacher's way, but your teacher has probaly made this much harder than it needs to be.

Actually, that makes way more sense than what he had us do. Then you can get the value of W by putting A as 200 in the original equation, right?

Thanks a lot, this will really help me on my test.

What program is that?

Love is an inexplicable, illogical attraction or affection towards an individual. Computers are smarter than that. :P

Well Spork, you already know that the length of one of the sides is 10 (since we had that equation of A= -2w^2 + 40w that we solved for the maximum)

Then you have

length times width = Area

10 times something = 200

Something = 20

Then just make sure you know which side is which side by plugging them into the perimeter equation and see which one works. (20 as the one which has the wall as a side or 10 as the one).

The important thing is to show your work and check everything. As long as you get it right, make it logical, and include the steps, then he'll mark it right.

Psht, that is rather a shallow view.

Love is explicable - The wish to pass on genes.

Love is logical - Protect those who have desirable genes, and those who perform desirable functions(Saving your life, sex, whatever).

Basic biological imperative, which computers don't have because they aren't programmed to have it.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Love is neither of those. Love makes you willing to do anything (including living in chastity) for someone, regardless of what they do and how they are.

Dunno man, it is all just the chemicals that are synapses(I think) release. There's nothing magic to love.

There isn't really a control over what you love either, so it can be quite annoying.

Also except by those chemicals there's no way to define love cause people view it in different ways.

It's a REALLY big shaft.

I didn't catch fire, I used the can of hairspray as a flamethrower and pointed it at my arm.

how are you going to ignore my posts when I'm offering to let you live as my vassal in two weeks time?
